  1. not according to a few of my sources is it it's last hurray - snow and cold will now push well into march aswell - could be the very COLDEST part of the winter too! - just wait and see - easterlies keep appearing on the models - and they can be the nastiest - coldest things going - so hold onto your hats - winter ain't over by a long shot

    Hi Andy,

I am fully aware of easterles - I have lived through a couple - but they are always progged 7 - 10 days ahead - never come to fruition - and they can be dull cold and grisly affairs this time of year - not always a guarantee of snow.

  2. I think there's a lot of sensible, realistic posts being made, myself.

Probably going to be a less snowy 'event' than looked possible a couple of days ago, but it's another complex situation so there may yet be a few pleasant surprises for some...

Well said - I do not see where the straw clutching is - not many posts at all in here today - and those that are, are showing what might happen in a fair light - no straws.

  3. The 'snow' that is coming in is not going to be as intense or widespread as first thought - the band is going to be narrow and not that heavy - so it is looking likely to be a surprise if anyone gets even 5cm the way it is being 'watered' down in the intensity.

Can see this passing through overnight with little or no evidence next morning (Monday) of it having even existed as a snow band!

  4. Tv forcaster are crap like the met office are crap

Is this because it is not showing what you want to see - if so, thats a rather unfair line. These are qualified weather forecasters and scientists who are applying their experience into what is a difficult scenario. Things will change again over the next 24 hours and then if they show what you want you will say they are great - no you won't, you will just be happy and neglect the negative remark you left.

They are doing a hard job and trying to give as much information as they can based on charts to hand at the time. Charts change - not their fault.

  5. GFS looks like it is playing down the event Sunday/Monday and apparent from elevations up northern areas it's a rain event., It is being said to be a mild outlier but not do sure after the BBC are even showing 8°C all day Sunday and we all know that will produce rain.....

Hoping for upgrades but I think the warnings are going to be modified for elevation and Southern area taken out.

    Hope not....

  6. Hi Andy,

As it happens, the Met Office were looking for Trainee forecasters anyway so they probably said HR will have you apply etc - as is normal. Here is some of the criteria for these roles as per Met Office website....

Required Standard of Mathematics and Physics for Trainee Forecasters

In order to be able to fully benefit from the intensive training programme provided, Trainee Forecasters will need to have ability in Mathematics and Physics to at least AS Level or equivalent and as a guideline should have some understanding of the following areas: Mathematics: Linear algebra and vector calculus Differential and integral calculus Ordinary and partial differential equations Probability theory and statistics Information and communication technology Numerical methods Physics: Fundamentals of mechanics Basic thermodynamics Wave theory/Fluid Motion/Turbulence Basics of electromagnetic radiation/electromagnetism Competence in these areas will be tested during the technical assessment.

  7. That streamer wafts around just a little , west to east and east to west , ...suspect there will be gaps and no snow periods shortly ,or a streamer of miniscule width whereby next door will get hammered whilst you remain dry .

The last snow of winter .... How long can it hang on ... Watching every last flake fall and savouring the moment , as it could be another 2 years until the next fall , maybe longer .

Ah.... you have a crystal ball. What a wonderful bit of nonsensical input to a thread that was.

  8. Roads down to Pengam and even the Corbetts roundabout in Caerphilly were a lot worse today John - mistake I made was leaving too early, I think in future if I'm going to make the effort I'll leave it until its light at the very least and give the roads a bit of time to clear the worst of the slush and ice. Could be bad tommorrow though if we get the freezing temperatures.

and as I speak just starting to snow quite a bit again down in Newport

I managed to take today off as well as yesterday in anticipation of it being bad. That is my route to Tongwynlais very early tomorrow morning and if it gets as cold as predicted - will be a bit dicey to say the least!
