  1. Woohoo! First snow here in Southern Finland! Actually, it looks like most of the Finland is covered in snow now! Compared to 2010-2011, which was excellent winter, we are not behind, we are earlier. First snow came here November 9th in 2010, now it came October 25th! However, GFS forecasts are looking for milder weather with low pressures and rain next week. Hoping that it won't happen...
  2. Yes, very much. Compared to last year, the winter started fairly late, around New Year. There was a short below-freezing and snow period in early December, but the rest of the December was mild and then there was that super storm right after Christmas. Take note that my observations concerns Southern Finland. The good news is that the winter is already in full swing in Northern Finland / Lapland.
  3. Yes, the forecasts looks very good for Finland (and Scandinavia) now. It's widely reported in media by our weather forecasters that "winter will take a big leap here next week".
  4. It seems to me that the effect of ENSO for winters is not so strong here in Europe. After all, we have had cold and harsh winters here regardless the state of ENSO. What matters here more is NAO and AO. NAO is really negative at the moment, and if it continues that way, we will surely have a cold start to winter. And it's only 3-4 weeks away, at least here in Finland.
  5. Here in South-Western Finland, September has been significantly cooler than last year, and even cooler than 2010. As writing this, it's only +7°C and raining. NAO is also in negative state at the moment: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/precip/CWlink/pna/nao_index.html Although yes, it's early, but things looks good for a cold winter. My prediction is that Northern Lapland will see the first snow in the end of this month and here in Southern parts at some point of October.
  6. Hi all. Have you seen this? http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_news/State_of_Emergency_Declared_in_North_Iceland_0_393447.news.aspx Looking good indeed.
