  1. Ye it's wonderful and suits my naturally melancholic disposition! I love the progression of the days and how the weather seems to be exerting a grip, watching nature utter a weak sigh before going to sleep for winter. Occasionally and without warning I'll get a fleeting image in my mind of an impossibly bright, warm June morning and recoil in horror, snapping myself firmly back into the here and now and the wonder of the season. Summer and its attendant horrors seem a million years ago now. How I wish I could freeze the next three months in time...

I think after reading a lot of your posts, that our weather preferences suit our personalities biggrin.png

I enjoy the different seasons for different reasons. Fortunately the weather doesn't follow your preferences otherwise we would lose a lot of wildlife and the crops would fail. After a cool, crisp winter, i shall be looking forward to a warm dry spring and summer with hopefully the insect numbers recovering after a very poor year for them.

  2. Hi folks, Ive been reading through numerous posts...and those wanting to aspire to something they want to do.. and that is anything at all....just go for it and aim high! You never know.

As for winter ...well I have this little niggly thing telling me cold..... that will get some peeps flustered...lol

dare I mention the words...lots of snow?????

Are you doing a forecast this year LOTS? I have been impressed with your winter forecasting the last couple of years.

  3. The volcano over in Iceland named Katla looks like it could be in for some serious buisness as the lava has risen and earthquake activity has shot up in the past 48hours the most activity since the 'Little volcano went off' 2 years back, someone reported that all the volcano needs in a slight nudge! Could this bring something different to the table if of course erupted in next month?

    Dark at the moment smile.png

Apparently katla blows normally within a few years of Eyjafjallajokull erupting. If katla does blow then there could be problems. Shes a bit of a big momma.

  4. Hi C,

Do you have a link to this data ?

    Thanks PM.

Not from an official site but someone who runs a blog did the calculations. (I'm assuming they are right)

    http://sunshinehours.wordpress.com/2012/10/18/fastest-arctic-ice-extent-refreeze-ever-in-31-days/

I agree john no matter how people try and jazz it up its been a devastating year for ice loss in the arctic quite probably a tipping point for summer ice loss and no amount of talk about speedy winter recovery can change that

The minimum was very low but would it have been so low without the massive polar low at the beginning of August?

  5. Freinds and family always ask me what the weather is looking like, and i have to say, for long term prospects in winter forecasting i always use Netweather's forecasters to take my lead from, people were quite impressed with the way i told them in mid Nov, that a cold spell was likely late jan last year, i told them that it was not down to me, it was down to GP, chiono and the like.

I listen and learn from the good peeps on here, some other forecasters and watching the models to get a good idea what is going on. Farmers, engineers etc ask my husband what my forecast is but he doesn't tell them it isn't me forecasting! He just grins when i get cross with him. When it goes pearshaped I will end up with a load of angry farmers on my doorstep!

  6. Difference is the weird weather just keeps on coming. I'll stick my neck out and say we'll have snowy cold winters more now, more dry warm springs and more unsettled summers. Not every year, but more often. More floods, stronger winds.

Why? Cus we are influencing the whole planet's weather systems now due to the melting ice, and the heat we generate.

Probably more than half of you will disagree with me. I don't know how to do a poll on here. Maybe someone could ask that question below for me? Are our cold winters and poor unsettled summers due to our influence on the climate, or just a natural variable?

    More likely the -nao.

  7. Watched the local weather forecast this morning and the lady (forgotten her name) said about a wonderful sunny day. Excellent i thought, washing out and off i go blackberry picking. Myself and washing get a soaking from a heavy shower sad.png

  8. November 2012

Drier than average month with high pressure dominating the weather for the first half of the month. Return to more mobile conditions later. Average temperatures for much of UK with exception of Scotland where colder than average temperatures expected. Wetter than average for many areas.

    December 2012

Wetter and milder than average. South-west England expected to have significantly higher than average rainfall.

    January 2013

Wetter and milder than average. South-west England expected to have significantly higher than average rainfall.

    February 2013

Slightly wetter than average. Slightly Milder than average across all areas with significant cold spells expected.

    March 2013

Slightly wetter than average, especially across Western areas. Average temperatures.

I hope that this forecast is off the mark as we REALLY do not need the rain down here. Haven't been too impressed with metcheck over the years, its one of several sites I look at for forecasting. I think some details are typed in wrong as we have had winds of 347mph forecast before biggrin.png

  9. Is there any chance someone could put a lid on the South West please? I'm so bored with being wet.

definately agree with that. Would love a run of dry days, don't care about the temperatures but would like a decent break from the rain!

I've been called worse! I get excited as anyone when snow is forecast, I have the radar on the pc, watching intently and working out when it will arrive here. For the last coule of years I've looked at different LRF, avidly model watched, and followed the snow & ice thread and the strat thread but I would get fed up after a week of either not being able to go anywhere or risking life and limb driving on icy roads. The prang i had in Dec 10 was my one and only and it really shook me up.

  11. Coming back into reality somewhat, i would be happy with an average winter with something for everyone from occasional snowy spells, high pressure set ups bringing average temperatures and raging mild southwesterlies and the odd bartlett set up from time to time. As the saying goes variety is the spice of life. I would personally dislike another December 2010 as it was great watching the snow fall and seeing the accumulations the following day but from then on it just became a chore to be daily scraping the car of ice and negotiating the trecherous roads. It also ruined the football schedules as well.

Instead a winter like 03/04 would suit me fine. I recall 3 spells of cold at the end of each month so i got to experience some cold stuff but it didnt drag on too much, By late February Spring should be underway.

I'm with you on this. I know its like commiting blasphemy on this board for not wanting snowmagedon but personally it could be a nightmare here. I could cope with a long snowy spell if the road through the village was gritted or people who cannot drive to the conditions stayed off the road! Its not the snow so much but the ice. I'm confident in my abilities of driving on ice but unfortunately i'm not confident of others, as i found out in December 2010 when a tractor and trailer slid into the side of my car.

We are ok to heat our home for the winter but I worry about the elderly and vulnerable, fuel companies are bleeding us dry and i am concerned how some people will cope.

I know that this is probably a far too sensible post but everyones circumstances are different. If you live in a town/city where the roads are gritted, shops are in walking distance and your home is toasty, then a 62/63 would have less effect on you. I do love the snow and have a great time playing in it with the children and dogs but even my 3 children had enough after a week of Dec 2010. They couldn't get to friends houses and friends couldn't get to us.

Having said that i would love to see a few snowy spells this winter.

  12. Well looks like a widespread ground frost with an air frost in places away from the towns tonight.

Currently 4.6c with a steady fall so -1 is quite possible I would think.

House is a tad on the chilly side this evening too at 14.9c but luckily I will be leaving soon and i'll have my cider blanket by the time I return laugh.png

Definately a nip in the air tonight. I've actually succumbed and put the heating on. We also have the woodburner going and it is currently surrounded by cats and dogs.

  13. Welcome to the forum as a non-lurker!

Yes I really have felt for those farming this year as it must have been very tough. Was tricky for us gardeners although at the end of the day that's for a hobby - must be very different when its your livelihood.

Lets hope for better things next year.

Thank you for your welcome. I have read this board most days for the last few years and have learn't alot but I shall have to blame you all if i get into trouble with the local farming community. It all started back in 2010 and I warned everyone of a harsh spell in December through warnings from joe b and piers C (yes I know they aren't looked upon favourbly here but they were both right then). My husband told everyone but didn't mention that it wasn't me forecasting. I read posters thoughts on here and follow the models. Farmers, engineers etc keep asking my husband what my forecast is. I have told him to tell them it isn't my forecasting but thoughts from other people and models. I'm going to end up in trouble one day!

  14. Hello there, been lurking for over 2 years and decided today to finally sign up. smile.png

In reply to this topic I have to say I want next summer to be warm and sunny with the odd rain shower mainly at night. Being on a farm was quite horrendous this year. Our maize crop was pathetic because of the lack of sunlight and cattle had to be brought back indoors several times because the fields got so drenched and churned up. Luckily the grass did well so we got 3 cuts of silage to keep the cows fed through the winter.

I also enjoy wildlife photography, especially butterflies. I'm a member of butterfly conservation and am currently trying to create a minature butterfly meadow at our village primary school and make my garden more butterfly friendly. This year was pretty horrendous for alot of wildlife and the poor old butterflies really suffered. They need warm, sunny weather and I'm hoping next summer this will happen so numbers will recover bit.
