  1. Hmmm they say that whilst holding the breath I imagine, here's hoping they havn't over looked the potential of the wind tonight to save them from having lots of egg on their faces tomorrow morning!

    holding *their* breath

Maybe if there wasn't so much rain to contend with in the SW then maybe the BBC would make more of an issue of the winds forecast for later.

Either that or there has been just a tad of over-hype floating about!!

  2. Yes I have just watched the latest BBC news24 forecast and Chris Fawkes has wind gusts at 60mph on the coast and 50mph inland at 03:00 tomorrow morning. A downgrade from the mornings forecast it would seem.

Also they don't seem too concerned about the wind, he said :

"maybe localised travel disruption and enough to bring down some tree branches maybe uproot weakened trees" hardly widespread disruption!

Main concern is the poor folk in SW England and Wales 30-50mm of rain potentially once the system passes through

  3. BBC midday forecast has just downgraded the winds from 70mph down to 60mph for coasts and 60 down to 50 for inland, every other forecasting source increasing their gust predictions, another example of the Beeb down playing an approaching storm to prevent panick?..

The Beeb would not do that to prevent panick.

More than likely the storm system isn't a strong as first thought or its changed track slightly.

I always knew we probably wouldn't achieve over 60mph gusts here anyway.

Maybe a little over-hype has been going on past few days. Who knows!!!

This is not looking good at all. Amazing that the time it arrives, reminds me of 1987 getting woken up at 3.30am. Coastal gust's will be very bad might even see 85mph and very possible 70mph inland,Along with the rain. Worrying, Take care everyone.

    Don't worry it's not another 87'

Although as you say very strong gusts along the coast.

Can't see the gusts topping 60mph inland though, BBC going for max inland gust of 60mph as well

Shame, would love to get an 80mph gust here in Essex. This rain is so boring

  5. Looking out south west from the windows of the flat in Brighton, right on the coast, it is wet, still and battleship grey. Could get very lively here tonight. I suspect the sash windows will be rattling manically later and it will be like being on a ship heading directly into the storm (though I accept that there are not many ships with sash windows.....).

    AS

    :-) haha

Yes its still very misty here with that grey haze.

BBC TV forecast going for 70mph gusts along the coast tonight.

  6. Are 60mph winds inland usual? I don't like wind, its the one weather I dont like...not looking forward to tonight to be honest!

I was referring to the rain - that is usual.

60mph gusts aren't the norm I guess but to joe public, it will just go unnoticed. To them it will just be rather windy like Thursday, no one spoke about it, apart from us mad weather lot... Haha

I prefer the wind to rain tbh, rain is so boring and happens most days in the UK.

Was going to go Oxford street Christmas shopping today but off to Stratford Westfield instead to keep dry.

  7. I don't actually think the winds will be of much concern during the day tomorrow it's more the rainfall amounts which are being forecast, the gales/severe gales don't arrive until overnight in SE. I did say 90mph out at sea not on land, max on land about 75mph I'd say on an exposed cliff top!

Just watched the latest BBC weather forecast on news24 with Susan Powell:

The main focus of the heavy rain will be SW England not US. Excellent news!

Yes we will have persistent rain but nothing that a usual rainy Saturday doesn't produce.

Compared to the poor folk in SW England and western Wales it won't be that bad in the SE rainfall wise.

She mentioned at 1 am Sunday morning gusts will peak at 60mph in SE England

  8. I think you could be right about the 85mph along the south coast, yesterdays system they predicted 70mph and 2 locations on the Welsh coastline I believe recorded 86mph, so it's certainly possible dare I say it may even be 90+ in the channel and the north-sea as it clears away from East Anglia!

Hi, looking at the charts 90mph is unlikely but not impossible.

More chance of 90mph as it heads away from Eastern England into the North Sea.

To joe public tomorrow afternoon will just seem another wet and windy Saturday.

  9. Well I'm certainly not going to let the pi**ing rain spoil my plans tomorrow. It done that enough during the summer.

A few puddles on Oxford street while shopping = what's new!!!

Just bugger off rain - you are boring!!! Where's the snow!!!

MOD thread still full of Prozac as ever, members taking every run from every model as gospel.. It's exhausting reading through conflicting posts.

  10. Morning guys, great 00z run with my -12 uppers showing and potential snow for SE... Woohoo

I must stress though that any true cold is 8 days away, three days ago it was also 8 days away. A familiar delay when a projected cold spell is forecast.

    Expect even further delays.

This is why I won't get excited until the chart above is showing at +48. For now it's just pure eye candy and the rest is FI.

  11. Exactly mate, if everyone in the world liked the same things then it would be a very boring place.

Saying that, this summer was pants. Yes it rained alot, but never in large amounts, but always enough to disrupt summer plans.

I love evenings like tonight though. I am laying in bed to the sounds of rain hammering on the window with a howling wind. My favourite weather to go to bed to.

I like any sort of weather, but "out of the ordinary" or severe weather interests me most.

Of course, I think everyone likes the sound of rain when they are in bed. It's the best. Especially on warm summer nights :-)

  12. Cat just scratched on the front door to come in. He usually stays out all night, tonight he's having none of it. Haha

Happy it's raining at night so it doesn't spoil my day plans, Saturday looks like the worst of it will be at night as well which is good.

Just got off the phone to my mum in Ealing and I said " have you heard the wind and rain" and she goes "yeah, nothing I haven't seen before" haha... Took the words right out of my mouth.

Off to bed now, let's hope the charts are still showing an incredible block as the 18z is tomorrow.

  13. I absolutely love the rain when it comes in large volumes or is very heavy. When I was a student living in Reading rain bored me. It all goes down the drains and all it makes is a few puddles. As I live out in the sticks large amounts of rain can alter the landscape dramatically, especially so as the River Deben runs though our village and breaches its banks 3 or 4 times a year on average.

I for one am hoping for a huge dumping of rain this weekend, with strong winds to boot. It's been a while since we had a decent autumn storm. Systems approaching from the west tend to lack in punch here in the east, whereas a storm from the Bay of Biscay tends to pack more of a punch.

The ground is wet now, it's autumn, I expect it to rain, so I don't make plans which rely on it being dry.

Fair enough, but like you unless you live in the sticks rain is BORING IMO ... Yes it produces puddles, but that's about it, every so often a river may get swollen but for most town folk it goes unnoticed.

I mean if seeing a river burst its banks floats your boat (no pun) then good for you mate... But I would like to remind you that you live in England - a land where it rains all the time - we just had one of the wettest summers on record.. You must be very satisfied.

I prefer weather that's not the norm - Snow, heat waves, vicious thunderstorms.

I can look at rain most days of the year in the UK

I've just opened the front door, heavy rain here now - how can anyone get excited watching drops of rain fall making the ground wet... Well!!

    Each to their own

  14. Agree, always best overnight when it doesn't inconvenience folk the same. Not a rain lover exactly, but do like things a bit active once in a while. I shouldn't think anybody particularly loves the rain after the bucketloads we've endured this year. drinks.gif Furthermore, my thoughts are with those in the Southwest and other regions whose run up to Xmas is far from pleasant.

Agreed, I didn't want to say anything as I know members love different types of weather and this is a weather forum and each to their own.

But as a rain hater; for example I can't get my head around why anyone would like/love it to rain heavily for say three hours and just cause a nuisance, or to the guys in the West misery and inconvenience.

It's dull, it's boring and it rains all the blinking time, it's not as of its a one off.

But I guess people who don't like snow could say the same thing to me. Why? ... Haha ;-)
