  1. My Met Office latest forecast says I should only have heavy rain now, with some sleet around midnight. So I guess this snow now is a bonus! Hope it stays as snow through the night
  2. Hooray! Finally turning to sleet/wet snow now! Temp 1.9C, DP 0.5C. Still need it a bit colder...no chance of settling yet Oh and I can smell the gas here!
  3. Latest NAE not so good IMBY. Shows us as rain after a bit of snow at 6pm
  4. 2.5 C here, but was 3.3 C an hour or so ago so at least it's some improvement! Temp dropping quite consistenly. DP stubbornly 1.1 C though. Just rain here, in fact 9.1mm so far. Oh if only that had all been snow!! No lying snow here anymore, it's all been washed away Fingers crossed for later though!
  5. About 2 inches I think, but had started to melt a bit when I measured it, so may have been a little more.
  6. Achh, and you're further west than me! It really is taking ages isn't it?!
  7. PPN was showing at Langport about half an hour ago, but seems to have moved back towards Taunton again. Maybe that was just a bit reaching ahead of the main ppn band though. Still, I only want it if it is snow! If it is rain or sleet that will kill off my remaining snow then Taunton can keep it!
  8. I've been waiting for it to just...edge...a....tiny...bit...closeeeer.... for ages! The leading edge of it has stalled literally 3 miles west of me according to the radar!! Unbelievable EDIT: Ooooh, we've had a jump forwards! Now just 2 miles away..... come on... you can do it.... EDIT 2: Ok. It's now retreating west...
  9. Well I shouldn't complain, I certainly can change my name now! Still, would have been nice to have changed it after a blizzard or something a bit more dramatic! Probably had about 5 or 6cm, but I didn't measure it until the thaw had started. Ugh, yes, thaw, and we now have sleet. Never really been that cold here, even over the last few days we only just made it below freezing some nights, and Thursday it reached over 6 degrees. The snow looked very promising when I got up at 4 this morning, but after about 6 it was only light and only occasionally. I watched the radar as snow bands approached, then split just before us going north and south of us before reforming the other side. Honestly! I did get a walk with my dog at first light though. Perfect, pure white snow. That is until my dog's blood splattered it! First time she'd ever seen snow (brought her over from NZ with us). She was so excited she charged off, running in circles, and within 15 seconds had skidded into a pole! Ran back to me, tail between legs, face covered with snow, and blood dripping from her nose. It stopped bleeding quite quickly and she went off running again, so hopefully it hasn't put her off it! I could have done with a Red Snow Warning for that though!
  10. It's very localised! I'm about 2 miles south east of Somerton and rain here at the moment with temp just dropped to 2.5 degrees. I hope we continue this pattern in summer and are extra warm here!
  11. Updated Met Office forecast has changed my heavy snow forecast to sleet
  12. Yes that is odd! Even if it was a bit warmer there you'd think you'd get sleet or rain! That would need to be very accurate forecasting to actually happen like that. Fingers crossed for you. More sleety rain here, with perhaps more rain than sleet
  13. It does seem strange. I'm only 13 miles east from you and being forecast heavy snow. Maybe because you're in a town?
  14. Hooray! The met office has just upgraded the snow forcast for this area. It had been showing light snow around midnight, but now it is showing heavy snow at 9pm and midnight with light snow at 3am! It's going to have cool down though, temp now up to 3 degrees and dew point is up to 0.8 degrees. I can see I'm going to be up late tonight...
  15. The last winter I was in England was 04/05- can't actually remember if I saw any snow that year! Since then I've been living in the sub-tropical north of New Zealand, so no snow there- only a couple of frosts a year. Was very envious seeing all of the snow here in the last few years! Being born in the mid eighties, the winters I remember here were the nineties and early 2000s, so really not seen any heavy snowfalls. And then of course when I return to the UK I move to the always snowy south west (!). Hoping for one of the fabled atlantic battleground events!
  16. Sleety rain!! Maybe my 2.9 reading is right. I think I'm destined to never change my name!
  17. Yey! You're not far from me! Do you have a temperature reading? I'm still at 2.9 degrees but I've not had my temperature sensor where it is for very long, so not sure how accurate this is.
  18. Have a spotlight lamp up against the window so I can see any flakes. Just got excited and ran outside because I thought I saw one...pretty sure now it was just a bug. It was kind of moving horizontally... I think I'm getting a bit desperate! No snow here yet.
  19. Really need the temperature to drop a bit here. It's been 2.9 degrees for the last couple of hours, with dew point -0.1 degrees. Seems to have stopped dropping. We had the radar showing snow over us an hour or so ago, but nothing falling from the sky here either. Hoping it will intensify later, and the temperature drops a bit more!
  20. It's ok, I went back and liked the original too! But I appreciated you reposting it as I had somehow missed it earlier. Fantastic post! Really hoping everything starts moving back west, or at least the cold sticks around for a while so we have time for a channel low to move through against the cold air! Thanks all for your input and analysis.
  21. I agree. I think I'd believe the GFS a little more if it wasn't so intent on returning the vortex to Greenland and bringing in a constant Atlantic flow in FI. If it was only a case of it treating this shortwave differently to the other models, and then later in the run it attempted to build heights again towards Greenland, I might just think we'd been unlucky to be scuppered by a shortwave again for this particular cold spell. But the fact it doesn't even really try to build heights suggests to me it's modelling the whole vortex and the strat warmings poorly. But then again before the last few runs it was showing Greenland highs into FI as if it did pick up on what we'd expect from the SSW! It's bizarre- what appears to have changed is not just its handling of the shortwave, but its handling of everything.
