  1. I'm sure everyone has got a different story to tell but imby this seems like the coldest winter we've had in a long time, we've  got February and march still to come which in recent years is when the fun has begun, it feels a bit like the 70's & 80's when it was the norm.hope everyone who has missed out thus far gets a big slice of pie before spring and if that means I get no more I'll be happy with what I've had and happy  for you. Good luck

  2. Merry christmas everyone! Many thanks for sharing your knowledge on this forum and keeping me entertained throughout the year, even if it does end up with me telling my mates its going to snow next week and looking stupid all the time........this time....maybe! Im no model reader but i follow the solar output closely. Im hoping the recent high solar output which i belive has set back cohens sai theroys is finally starting to wane and this will deliver the big fat ssw that santa forgot soon after the new year bringing snow n ice aplenty. Have a goodun gang and keep the faith...ITS A COMING!

  3. I don`t think there can be any deniying that solar output has a massive effect on climate, our recent cold winters and wet summers correlate perfectly with the decrease in output from the sun in recent years. there are undoubatably many other factors that affect the patterns we see in the NH but i would say most of these are somehow inter-related to either low or high solar activity which would lead me to belive that the colder winters we have been experincing in the last few years are likely to become the norm and the winters of the 90`s will be much less frequent.

  4. I would just like to express my respect to Stewart who predicted this likely cold spell way back at the start of december, it`s unfolded as he predicted almost to the day. Its great having such knowledgeable people on here sharing their thoughts and answering the questions of newbies like myself.

Solar activity has increased somewhat in the last week in respect of the amount of spots visible on the disc but most of these spots are not magnetically complex and are basically dorment, there are a couple of regions producing m class flares at present but nothing too drastic.Nobody fully understands the mechanism that turns low solar activity into low NH temps but there does seem to be some correlation, my theroy would be high solar activity somehow cools the stratosphere, giving us a warmish winter and vice versa. i think the current ssw is probably due to the very low solar activity in recent weeks and any affects from solar output won`t stop the effects of this ssw and the one predicted later in jan.....bring it on, bout time we had some lovely white stuff

  5. My first post(its like doing a bungee jump but here goes).

Even though the models have teased us and let us down in recent weeks i think we have been very lucky to have been in with a shout of something akin to 2010 considering the fact that were currently reaching solar max which usally lends itself to a more westerly regime, the blocking has been there and the jet has tracked well south at times which are generally sypnotics of low solar activity. currently solar activity is at very low levels for a solar max(more akin to a solar minimum) which is why i belive we have had so much northern blocking so early this year even though it hasn`t delivered the good as yet.

with the imminent ssw being forecast were in with another good chance of some propa cold in jan so basically everyone needs to be patient and wait for the dice to roll in our favour...which they will at some point! btw if it was a snowmageddon every day of winter we`d soon get p****d off, 3 weeks of mayhem would be fine.
