Expecting a very cold one here tonight, only patchy frozen snow left but out of the sun its stayed as ice all day. In Jan 2009 and dec 2010 we hit -18 & -16 respectively. Doubt I will see that again in my time. For the record, we're 4 miles outside Glastonbury on the edge of the levels, it tends to be a bit of a 'frost hollow'. Keep warm peeps.

Hi all, wow, what a great surprise of a day! Still coming down as hard as anything. Granted, would have liked a degree or two lower all day, but hey, that is being greedy. Having said that its come down a degree in the last half hour here in Butleigh near Glastonbury. Currently 1.3. First post in a very long time!

I think the thing to remember is the BBC are a news organisation and not a meteorological organisation, they relay information from their sources. No different to the Daily Mail or Sky News. So the information they show is of no higher quality than that found elsewhere. (Sorry not chastising) I jus have a tendency to ignore the BBC weather data especially now they have changed their source..
Good point m8..well taken. but i think its a shame that the vast majority of folk rely on that source as taxpayers and it should be based on the best information...for another time perhaps....once we actually see who was correct??

....Hmmm...They seem to have been on the cat nip again in the MAD thread. I really hope it comes off this time but I have been here with everyone else many times before. The thing is when the BBC forecast says 'cold' or 'colder' ...so far this winter, all they've been referring to is a return to average, as it is February. The forecast max/min temps for the next 10 days are, on their website, in no way exceptional at the moment and I get the feeling that since they ditched the Met they've been allowed a tad more freedom with their broadcast forecasts. anyone else picked that up?
-
let's not get too obsessive in here too...there are some in the MAD thread who can intimidate...thats what this thread is good for surely?
any hoo!...!...not convinced yet of any remarkable cold incoming...despite the MAD thread insanity! it has so far been a cool but unremarkable winter, as far as the conditions on the ground are concerned, for the South UK. Cant recall where but someone recently commented on the forecasters propensity to 'cover themselves' in case the reality was missed. well who can blame them in this litigious world we live in? however, they are still living off taxpayers money........ go figure.

entertainingly, some posters in the last few days on the 'MAD' thread are still aligning BBC output with MET office?? Too busy trying to pin their tail to the donkey i expect.

It is quite feasible for snow as has been discussed in here before and it is a large land mass with no temp modification upward. Unlike us surrounded by the sea
....elevation? just a thought.

Whats all that white stuff or where is all the white stuff?
Its the fluff offered by the bbc and met office. That's what our tax buys mate.

I'm not sure I understand this, particularly the last sentence. Looking at the latest GFS run we still have a potent PM spell - interupted for a few hours by the storm on Wed night. Yes the longevity has reduced by a day or so but in terms of the uppers and wintry potential it doesn't look much different, at least up until the weekend?
Hi mate, yes, but in fact, the reality seems to be in line with the official met forecast which has consistently been for nothing extraordinary or even slightly unusual for uk january weather. If you live north of Birmingham then its also normal winter fayre in the week ahead, notwithstanding any shortlived cyclogenesis and storms in the mix.
-
Still slightly confused. Max here today was 5.5 degrees....yet, only yesterday, the forecast on the beeb was for colder conditions. they're giving 6 s, 7 s and 10 s for the coming week. They even seem to be avoiding the words 'cold' or 'colder' now. Go figure that out.

Bloody sleep regressions! I've only just got off of child duty! Gah! I just saw the mention of low - wind and rain and pretty much left mad thread after only reading one page. Not going to bother wasting my time...Roll on spring ...
Ha, don't know why it's taken me so many years to realise what a waste of time following THAT thread is, they seem to be making it up half the time with one or three noteable exceptions .....no wonder some genuine experts have stopped getting involved.

Agree with that sentiment.....2.5 degree min here near Glasto last night.....its cold but really not worthy of being called a 'cold snap' .it is january after all.
I think too many of the guys in the MAD thead seem to imply the various models in some way determine the outcome. Then whip everyone up into a frenzy over conjecture....me included at times I admit.....lol.
-
Nah....it's looking like drizzle again. Time 4 bed...
-
1.2 degrees just outside Glasto , but steady, light to mod snow atm. Hoping to wake up to at least a light covering...❄️

Yes, it's underwhelming.....

Hi all. Been watching the mod thread over the last few weeks. Been a lurker for 5 years or so but at this point, I have to say I'm more confused than ever by the posts there in the last couple of days. Atm, it's -3 here near Glastonbury, and we have wind direction E or SE for the next five days or so with low single fig temps forecast......fantastic January weather, and what a beautiful sunny day it was today.
i need to try and avoid the mod thread if I want any useful info about the weather beyond about T48+

By the way, drove into town earlier, the view of the mendips was awesome all swathed in snow and lit by the setting sun. Wish I took a pic.
