Is it too early for Winter ramping? Not for me ( in my little Narnia head) - Jamstec is providing a nice cool chart for Winter 2014-2015 for us here in Winter! Haven't got a clue whether it is a reliable tool for forecast and am totally gormless when it comes to understanding what an El Nino Modika is but have grasped the fact that it is predicting things to be colder than they originally predicted! Sorry I can't post the chart - clueless on how to do that as well but easy to locate ( I put up the link but was told I couldn't post it!)

Agh but you are higher. I used to live in Redlynch and that had more snow than Salisbury but that is higher again than Downton - fingers crossed for us all!You've got more chance than me. You're 6 miles further north.

Much excitement going on in the MOD thread tonight ( & more than a little agitation - more angst than on Eastenders). So does anyone think we may have a chance of any white stuff down here in the South next week?

Ran the Great South run in Southsea this morning and at times I was lifted off my feet. Can't believe the wind speed can be double that tomorrow morning! Exciting but dangerous!

Absolutely fantastic day! Just love the snow! All arrived as forecast in fact the forecasting was spot on! Well done to the met men! and many thanks to all the clever and entertaining folk on here who seemed to produce the right charts at the right time and kept the anticipation going. Fingers crossed that the good people of Cornwall get a massive fall before the Winter's out. There is still so much to play (pray) for!

We have very wet sleet in Salisbury. I'm worried that when the snow comes it will be too wet to stick! I'm working until 3 tonight so it's nice to have some company waiting for things to happen!

Became very excited when rituisticly burning my shovel whilst dancing in circles wearing my bikini and sunglasses (reverse psychology) to find it had already started snowing. Alas I was to find out that it was only ash falling on my head! Now what do I do with the grit that I purchased at the same time as the shovel?

Ever since I purchased a snow shovel - we haven't had a flake of snow - I think my snow shovel is cursed! I'm off to burn the snow shovel!

the general rules are that u cant call snow even 24 hours before the event happens with any great certainty is my understanding. so all i look for is not to completely rule snow out and its still not ruled out! even the met office are showing snow for my area on saturday!!! when that happens i start to get excited as they are very reluctant to put snow on there! i dare not look at metcheck (the wishlist forecast website) as thats showing a snowmageddon for next week which wont happen!
So true but I also believe out of confusion comes snow! It always seems to happen when there is dispair and uncertainly suddenly a shed load drops on us!

5th December - I'm flying on that day or 9th December when I am due to return. Delayed flying out in 2010 and snowed out for four extra days on my return. Can't beleive Heathrow have bought enough new equipment to cope with more than a flurry of snow!

You are right - it is! Though having spent the day yesterday, locating acorns (suspiciously none found), digging for moles and chasing rabbits to see how hairy their feet are, I think this topic should have the same gravitas as the Model thread!

The Donegal Postman who forecasts from the traditional methods of the ancient Irish and has accurately forecast the last two summers and winters correctly has forecast a cold snowy winter for 2012 !
N.B I think that involves looking at nature not the head on his Guinness!

A couple more of nature's indicators of a hard winter:
Weeds growing taller than usual in summer.
Squirrels building their nests low in the trees
Fur on rabbits' feet growing thicker than usual

A few more folklores:
The more fog in August the more Snowfall in Winter
Thunder in November, bitter cold to follow
Spiders building thicker nests and trying to invade homes sign of a cold winter
Snow escaping from the chimney and flowing to the ground - snow within 26 days (or a fine from the environment agency for pollution)
and back on the subject of bees:
bees to the hive early - evidence of a freezing winter

Where the rain doth fall in abundance in Summer so the cold and snow will follow in Winter!

Deers grazing on the lowlands are a sign of a bad winter - obviously this doesn't apply in Lincolnshire! If you can't find any acorns on the ground at the start of November is another good sign! Robins going into barns and porches indicate bad weather is on its way!

Well this is my sort of forum! Geese flying in formation from the North is a sign of snow. When there are lots of berries on the White Rowan Tree and if your crab apples are large then a harsh winter is on its way!

just hoping the cold stays around long enough for us all to get a little of the white stuff. Thursdays offering appears to miss most of Central England but I guess these things change from day to day.
