  1. We went up onto the moor early this morning whilst it was quiet and had breakfast at the Fox's Tor then went for a stomp around. Bitterly cold in the wind, but stunning in the sun.

On our way back, we were just in time to catch the herds of people making their way up, and as Festival King said, cars abandoned on the road side, hardly any room to get through. Police Landrovers were just arriving as we left.

I understand the desperation to see the snow but a bit more attention to parking might be a good idea!!!

Must have been nice up there. I have to say, a couple of years ago when I live there and we had a lot of snow, it was heaven when they closed the roads for a day, because we could enjoy the snow! But the people who travel up from town have no consideration for people like you guys who actually live on the moors. Just park where they stop. That's why, no matter how tempting it is to come up and see the snow, I won't do it because I know how annoying it is!

Anyway, had a lovely walk in plym bridge woods today. No snow but nice and cold!

  2. Crispy and white here this morning. Slight covering.

Only a couple of cm's on the top of the moor at Princetown at about 6.00 pm last night but very icy apparently. Police stopping cars on some of the roads. Silly drivers parking on roadsides meaning emergency vehicles can't get through. Happens every time it snows.

Anyway, hope you all got at least a few flakes.

Nothing here but a frost! The dartcam looks good. Your right about idiots parking all over the road. Its like the drive past the coop at yelverton and suddenly half their brain capacity disappears! It used to wind me up when I was living up there!

  3. Hi beast I'm looking at the Dartmoor webcam and it looks like the snow from last night has melted from what looks like sleety rain. I'm no or sure where exactly the webcam is situated.... I suppose with elevation it will be snow, so where do you think the best bet is for today. I was going to leave it until the morning after tonight's snow fall there may well be more tomorrow morning

    Cheers JB

Hi mate, Dartcam is situated around two bridges. I think your best bet is to leave it until the morning and find a spot outside of Princetown. It looks like snow all day on the moors so you are likely to have more fun tomorrow! If you are going today then Princetown is the only place that will have a decent amount mate. Good luck!

  4. Cheers mate, will take all that on board. Sounds a bit manic!!! Do you know of any other good, quieter places to go, I've promised the kids snow and sledging my youngest hasn't seen snow yet,but I didn't think there would be that much. Will you be venturing out in the snow this wkend?

That's ok. It can get very manic! You will presumably be coming through Tavistock way. There will be places before you get to Princetown on the moors and also, if you carry on through Rundlestone rather than turn right to go past the Prison and into Princetown, keep heading for signs towards Exeter, you will find some good spots up there. That takes you past Princetown and that way you are the other side of Princetown from Plymouth and it shouldn't be anywhere near as busy that way.

    Have fun mate!

  5. Ok thanks BOP, looks like there's a nice Inn in town, so if we get stuck at least we will have somewhere to stay (and an excuse to have a day off work on Monday)

    JB

That's ok. There are 2 places. The Plume of Feathers and the Prince of Wales. Probably a good idea to book in advance, they can get busy. There is a couple of bunk houses as well.

But take it from someone who used to live there. I only live 15 minutes away form it now and even I wouldn't dare venture up there when snow is coming. Its horrendous on the roads. And totally agree with BM4PM, absolutely everyone from Plymouth will be heading up there! Snow is the holy grail, but its not worth the hassle of that!

If you go though, be careful and most of all, have fun mate!

  6. Anyone in here from Princetown/Devon? If it's going to snow in Cornwall/ Devon this ,I've been told is the place to be.. Was thinking of taking a drive up there tomorrow/Sunday with the sledge and kids was wondering if it would be worth the hour drive, anyone with any info much appreciated

I used to be live in Princetown and yes, on an event like this we would get a lot of snow and it is definitely the place to be. However, be warned that if you intend to travel up there you will be joining most people within a 20 mile radius so it blocks up all the roads, which leaves the locals disgruntled! Secondly, everywhere from Princetown is down a hill so whilst you may get up there, you might have a job getting back out again!

  7. I went the opposite way to escape all that with the wife and to drink in some nice friendly pubs mind you i still work in plymouth which is a pain in the......

Fair play to you! Its a really nice area to live if you choose to live there. Dousland is very nice. The missus is a Plymouth girl so it was just to far out of the way for her!

Just had Thunder, Lightening and a heavy hail shower. That will do!

  8. How come you moved?

Used to enjoy your snow reports from Dartmoor.

Off to Dartmouth for our usual late January break there next Thursday 22nd for 3 nights at the Royal Castle hotel.

Dartmouth is fantastic, you will have a great time! I moved because firstly the wife hated it up there with a passion. Too remote and "villagey" etc, and also I had the opportunity to move down to Plympton Fire Station with the Fire Service which is much busier. So I took it!

I miss giving the snow reports! We do get some here occasionally being on the edge of the moors but being 350m lower than I was, its a much lower chance!
