A few people have asked this morning why the snow showers haven’t been heavy these last few days.  I hope @johnholmes  doesn’t mind, but he posted this in the MOD thread earlier explaining why....

‘Just a comment about the showers coming in off the N Sea during this cold spell. None of the skew-t diagrams, sveral days prior to the first showers, nor during the last 48 hours have shown cloud tops above 8-at times 12,000 ft. The air aloft has not been as cold as say on previous cases when bands/showers have affected eastern and central hours. Thus the intensity of many of the showers has not been very high. Obviously in a few locations the frequency tended to make up for this. I have not noticed any posts about 'thunder-snow' another indication that the instability has not been very marked.’

Thanks for that mate, explains why the clouds aren’t as full or as numerous as they could have been. Nice to see the East getting in on the action though , been a while since they had a flake settling I think.

Any more knowledgeable people got any ideas why this hasn't delivered to the degree which all of the hi-res models suggested 24 hours before the event? - I'm assuming they just aren't as good at modelling easterlies and the showery regime they tend to deliver?

Looks to me that the showers just haven't travelled in land as intensely as expected so the coastal areas have done quite well but those further inland ended up with scattered showers rather than consistent snow.

Same question here. All the values seemed to be right for a major snow event so something was  over estimated. I wonder what?

Agreed, but that is about cut-off time for heavy showers, especially in terms of progress inland. After that isobars widen as HP exerts more influence, wind slackens, and convection reduces, making it largely dry for the bulk of our region for tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday (the first Atlantic front dies over Ireland) and Friday. After that it's less certain, but right now we're looking dry and cold for the next seven days from midnight tonight.

That’s the worry I don’t see any attraction of ££££ heating bills if there’s no snow. Heatings been on full blast for days. I dread to think what the bill will be

Yeah a breakdown was possible by Thursday. I'm no expert it's just from experience a 1056mb is impressive and generally stubborn to be pushed away easily....

I'm not the most knowledgeable poster

But have 30 years of chart viewing under my belt.

    Enjoy your XC60.

I've just put 4 Continental winter tyres on mine for extra grip and fun they make a massive difference imo.

And reduce the risk of my Air bags popping out  .

I’ve had the Michelin allweathers on mine for a couple of years now with living up here and they make a remarkable difference Don’t stop you from getting stuck behind idiots who can’t drive in snow though
