Here in Newquay itโs blowin* a gooden .ย
North Cornwall exposed to the Westerly wind. Maybe more sheltered here from South Westelies and Westelies.ย

Seriously not sure why St Austell in Cornwall is under an Amber Warning . Just an ordinary windy night here. No notable gusts here at all. Maybe touching 50mph every once in awhile. Very disappointing. I was looking forward to a stormy night to be honest. I know it's bad elsewhere but big let down for my location Very hyped up in my opinion. We have had way worse than this before!ย

I don't understand. 2 days go many sites were saying 70mph gusts here and then yesterday morning 65mph gusts and then it's got lower and lower. Met Office and Netweather has us barely in the 50mph gusts category which is normal for a windy day in the winter down here and certainly not enough for an Amber Warning. So confused and a little disappointed as I was really looking forward to a good blow!ย

Ouch, could we be looking at another 1987 here?
Hardly! Those gusts are in kph not mph. 1987 storm had much higher gusts.ย

Not the graph I posted above, I was replying to another poster who had posted another screenshot from a French weather model with wind speeds not wind gustsย
this is the screenshot they posted which isnโt gusts, itโs mean wind speed translated from French.
I posted the gfs gusts graph to show how severe it could beย
Sorry. I didn't see that. My mistake

All charts are showing the storm weakening in the English channel now, nothing inlandย
Weakening already?! Are you sure? I'm sure it's not meant to be at its lowest pressure until it's over central southern England

All gone calm here in St Austell Cornwall. Had 4 hours of heavy rain and very gusty winds with at least 2 hrs plus of gusts to 60mph at least and from a south to south easterly direction felt very exposed and again very unusual to have winds that strong from that direction. Lots of debris and small branches off trees and surface water flooding. Pressure dropping quickly. Currently 970mb. Now just wait to see if we actually get these extreme gusts of wind that has been forecast in the early hours!ย

I'm in St Austell also. One model says gusts to nothing more than 30mph and other models say 80mph!! Crazy at this short time frame!!!!ย

I think the amber warnings will be dropped tomorrow and the yellow warnings will be scrapping the south coast. Maybe keep a yellow warning for the rain but that's it. I'm secretly disappointed here in Cornwall as was getting excited about it all. CI and Northern France now in the firing line. Signing off until the next storm that disappoints ย

Usually always the case with these potent storms. Trends further and further south. Alot of rain still I'm sure but looks like ending up a normal autumnal windy day apart from the CI and Northern France getting the worst of it.ย

You'll see some high seas that's for sure if you're picticularly on the south coast of Cornwall. ...
I live on the south coast close to St Austell

The UK might miss out on these storms altogether then these potent storms for the most part trend more south as the day approaches. I was looking forward to seeing some high winds and high seas to be honest as I live in Cornwall. However I don't wish loss of life or too much damage of course!ย

Not ready for autumn just yet! We need a decent summery month and I'm hoping that September will deliver especially as I have friends down to visit throughout September!

Ok..long way off ..BUT the extended GEFS 12z mean does indicate a gradually increasing chance of high pressure becoming established in the vicinity of the u k during the very early stages of the meteorological autumn?! ๏ธ ย
Same looking charts we have seen since the beginning of July! Always 10 days out and never comes to fruition

Sorry but can someone explain to me what a "Moutain Torque Event" is please as I've never heard of it? Lol
Also apart from El Nino do we think the ongoing wildfires in Canada might be having an impact on the troposphere and what is happening downstream?
Thanks ย

I don't think anyone has said at any point that a SSW guarantees cold weather, and I don't think anyone has indicated that they are 100% that the upcoming SSW is bringing cold weather. Infact the only people who have mentioned anything of the sort are the people trying to constantly remind everyone else that it doesn't guarantee cold, despite it being pretty common knowledge through-out.ย
I think it's safe to say that 99% of the thread followers are fully aware that it doesn't guarantee cold, but I think the discussion over the past few days especially has been really interesting and there's always, or should always be a good hype around a SSW at this stage especially as no-one knows how it will play out and that's where the interest and excitement comes from.
People are not here for the guarantee of cold .... otherwise nobody would be here ย
We're here to enjoy the ride of seeing how it plays, a SSW doesn't guarantee cold and snow, but it gives us a ticket to the raffle and that's where the thrill of the chase comes in.ย
If you want spring and warmth, maybe best not to hang your hat on it for at least another few weeks until the effects of the SSW are laid out a bit clearer.ย
Ummmm ok. Keep your knickers on! It was just a comment. I wasn't suggesting anyone was saying anything. I was just echoing what others have been saying in regards to a SSW.ย
Now I've realised why I don't comment on here ever! Especially if I'm gonna get my head bitten off!ย
Not the warm welcome I was hoping for.
I will now go back into the background as before and read and watch from afar.ย
Moderators, please forgive the off topic comment.ย

Model Output Discussion - Spring Has Sprung
in Forecast Model Discussion

Could you possibly change the title now to something like Spring has sprung or not as the case may be? Or something similar?
