  1. A wet and miserable end to February, then. A fitting last day for a pretty awful month which saw damaging winds over several days and higher than average rainfall but next to no proper winter weather. I think we had a couple of mornings at 0c here and a few wintry showers of sleet and wet snow, but nothing remotely threatening lying snow. I will be glad to see the back of February 2022 for so many reasons and hope that March and the advent of Spring brings more settled weather as well as happier news on other matters as well.
  2. Early heavy rain now giving way to broken cloud and blue sky is visible again! Might get some more welcome sunshine today to help dry things out. Glad to see the back of the stormy conditions for the time being, and there are hopeful signs of more settled weather in the long range charts for March, although these are notoriously unreliable, of course!
  3. Awful night for sleep. Wind roaring constantly around the roof and windows and every now and again a more violent gust lifting slates and flapping them around - don’t know how they stayed on the roof. I don’t mind wind storms during the day but at night I lay awake wondering if there’s going to be damage in the morning. Mad. Hoping it’s all going to calm down a bit for a few days but there’s no guarantee the jet streams is going to leave our part of the world for a while yet.
  4. That was an exhausting night. Almost constant roaring from the wind across the roof made it difficult to sleep and this was made worse by stronger gusts every 10 minutes or so which lifted slates here and there and caused a noisy flapping sound. Since this is directly above my head I found it hard to sleep for any length of time. I’m actually glad to be up and about now. I like all the variations of British weather but I’m fed up with the wind now. We need a nice calm week to recover.
  5. What a nasty day of weather. Don’t know why this came as a bit of surprise to me but I imagine I thought Eunice was the last of the stormy weather. Yesterday was windy too, but today we’ve had stronger gales, gusting almost as violent as Eunice delivered, but accompanied by heavy, almost continuous rain. There was a break in the rain before sunset followed by some hefty hail showers, but the wind hasn’t let up at all. I can hear it rumbling around the roof and testing the windows and I believe it’s going to continue all night. Lovely. The jet stream can do one, now please.
  6. Still very strong gales here - didn’t ease up at all after the squall line passed over. Don’t know why I wasn’t expecting this - probably didn’t look any further ahead than Eunice and didn’t think we’d get three on the trot…. However, it’s definitely brightening to my north and I think the rain has finally stopped! The worst of the storm may be now moving away but the wind is forecast to remain strong overnight and for most of tomorrow.
  7. After another very wet and stormy day, I think I can finally see the back edge of the rain to my north. The sky is black to the south as the heaviest rain moves away at last, but unfortunately the wind is forecast to remain strong and gusty through the night and for most of tomorrow. What a week of weather. February has certainly made up for the generally benign and settled January many of enjoyed.
  8. The squall line appears to passing through here now - greater intensity to the wind and heavier rain but so far it looks as though it won’t be any worse that the worst that Eunice threw at us. I think that this storm is just as severe as Eunice in my immediate location if only in respect of the strength of the sustained wind speed but the gusts are not as violent.
  9. Yes….looks like I can expect the squall around 3:25pm looking at the radar - I hope my newly refixed garage roof tiles stay fixed ‘cos I don’t want to have to get up there again….
  10. I’ve been listening to George and Aretha singing “I knew you were waiting” ever since Robobunny and Queen Bee sung their duet last weekend. And if you understand any of that last sentence you’re just as sad as I am……
  11. Got the garage roof fixed yesterday in quite windy conditions - was quite hairy up the ladder but glad I did it because I couldn’t attempt it today! Now we are back in strong gales which are not far off being worthy of another name….. Leaving everything tied down for the time being.
  12. Was absolutely hammering it down here earlier in a gusty westerly but now the rain has stopped and it’s just very windy again. Not been able to fix the garage roof yet but I’ll get the ladders out and have a look shortly, while it’s not raining. Could have been worse and I’m still thankful to have avoided real problems. Went up to the shop (3.5miles) earlier and discovered that one of the local lanes is totally blocked by a fall of several old pine trees which must have been caught by one of the strongest gusts. Shame to see all those old trees down but apart from that I couldn’t see any other major issues locally. We are lucky that the trees didn’t have their leaves on or it might have been a very different story.
  13. I’ve been reading some posts from the other regions, especially the south east, and I reckon I dodged a bullet yesterday, despite having a bit of damage to the garage roof. It was wild for a time but no trees down that I can see, no other damage to the house, and no power cut! So I’m grateful that the storm seems to have passed more to the south and left me relatively unscathed. My sympathies to anyone else who had a worse experience and hope you get back to normal as soon as possible. I’ve got a feeling that there’s going to be another storm around the end of the month looking at the long range charts, so I’ll keep watching….
  14. Maybe this is better off in the models thread but is the GFS on to something here (28th February - I know it’s 10 days away….) Might not be the last blowy day we get this winter…?
  15. We had another half an hour of really strong, violent gusts that shook nearby large mature trees around like grass but it’s eased up again. The noise was huge. I had to go outside to check for damage and I was watching as slates on the roof were flapping up and down - I thought any minute they’ll all go - but the roof survived! Good old Welsh slate! Now that it’s calmed down a bit, and the sun’s out through watery clouds, I’m hoping we’ve come out relatively unscathed. However, given that we are not in the red warning zone, and knowing how violent the wind was here, I suspect those in the south east will see more damage before the afternoon is ended.
  16. Lights continuing to flicker - come on Western Power, don’t let me down now…! ….and there was the strongest and most violent gust yet! The whole house seemed to shudder and the roof howled, but we’re still here! I’d better go and see if any more of the roof came off….
  17. Have possibly reached the most dangerous part of this storm with some really powerful gusts shaking everything and making a hell of a noise. Just lost the second ridge tile off the garage roof but luckily didn’t fall on the car - so close! Have now moved the car . Had the lights off for just a few seconds but then they came on again - thank goodness! However, the sun has started to come out and if we can just get through the next half an hour I think the worst might be over…..

  19. Looks like there are six or seven power cuts in Pembrokeshire so far, each affecting multiple properties, but nothing widespread. Lets hope it stays that way. https://powercuts.westernpower.co.uk/ There do seem to be a lot of power issues around the country especially in the South West. I wouldn't want to be working on power lines in this weather....!
  20. Seems quite fitful here with steady but not damaging winds and then every few minutes a giant gust has a go at the roof, making everything that moves rattle and bang, then back to relative normality. If this continues for another two hours or so I think I'll be through the worst. Just as I wrote the above a huge gust hit the house and made it shudder. Guess there's more of that to come.....
  21. Just noticed the first bit of damage - I've lot a ridge tile off the end of the garage roof. Must have happened during the stronger gusts we had earlier today. Amazingly, for a heavy concrete tile, it was blown 2 metres away from the garage and landed unbroken! However, it's left a weak spot on the roof which the wind can exploit if it gets up again later - hope I don't lose any more of the roof! Must admit I wasn't expecting any damage this early on.
  22. WalesOnline reporting cancellations: Storm Eunice: Everything that's cancelled and closed in Wales after the Met Office red weather warning - Wales Online WWW.WALESONLINE.CO.UK The impending storm has led to school closures, train suspensions and events being called off
  23. It’s very interesting hearing how this storm is developing and affecting different areas. After a stormy hour or so, the wind has dropped slightly here and the gusts have eased. However, the rain has returned, not torrential but definitely falling sideways!
