Horse Chestnuts: Drought And Decay
Cheeseburger replied to acbrixton's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Sycamore also offers little in the way of benifits to our native wildlife. As part of the woodland managment plan on my golf course, we are removing sycamore every year. We had a visit from an ecology advisor from the sports turf research institute last week who was pleased with the way in which our small woodlands are being mangaged with the reduction of sycamore, and the re-introduction of native species. -
Heavy hail shower here earlier this afternoon lasting around 30 secs. Jst been for a walk up the local hill, lovely cloud formations and a clear view across the bay of the Lake district mountains which had a covering of snow on the peaks . Very Nice.
-
Very light wet snow shower about 30 mins ago. Only lasted a few minutes.

A few heavy outbreaks of rain and hail this afternoon, each only lasting a few minutes. Clear blue skies at present and a strongish gusty wind. The tide was in when I drove down the prom an hour ago, and it was quite a rough sea.

About 3cm settled on cars and grass, and a dusting on roads, pavements.Light/moderate snow was almost horizontal at work this morning with laying snow being blown about into small drifts. Light snow at present and feeling raw in the wind. I have just looked on this site, http://www.cybermoor.org/travel-services/webcams/index.asp, I thought it would be covered up there in the east Lakes. -

Cheeseburger replied to Paul Sherman's topic in Weather reports
Heavyish snow for about 30 mins around 10.30 this morning, leaving about 5mm on the grass . The clouds approaching from the north across the bay are dark and look full of snow, so fingers crossed theres more to come B) Just started again. -
Temp - 5.8oC Wind Chill - 3oC Wind speed - 19.4 mph Wind direction - NW Dew point - 2.5oC Been cloudy but dry all day, but just starting to rain.

As Stoxs has said, Spring is the best time. Once the temps have started to rise above 10oC and the frosts have ended.
-
Should be fine Mondy. As long as its not mown too short, and you dont take more than a third of the leaf blade away. At this time of year when soil temps and light intensity are low, its better to keep the lawn long rather than short as there is more leaf blade area to collect light for photosynthesis, helping to keep the plant healthy. Grass is a pretty resilient plant and will recover from most stresses like frost and mowing fairly quickly.

Dirt, dirt?, its soil, sorry im doin soil science and site evaluation at the mo on my course and its really interesting....NOT , well it is if ya got grass growing in it . Spose it could cause a humid enviroment around the bulb which could cause fungal disease, but should think they'll be ok, bulbs are quite hardy. I'll ask the guy that does the flower beds at work 2mo.
-
Cool, no probs . Dont know much about flower, jst grass and trees, but i think the extra soil will protect the bulbs when, finally the temps start to drop and hopefully you should get some nice colourful flowers in spring
