But, if we had had the computers able to model this scenario in advance in 1978 would they have predicted that outcome? Probably yes! Is there anything resembling this being modelled at the moment? No.... but we can hope.
At this range? I don't think so.

There is no middle ground on this forum, its either party time or a funeral. We are all living in the past and trying to revisit our youth with memories of 47, 63, 79 and 81 and it's causing distress. In a few days time there will be another party and the cycle will continue. How often do very cold runs actually verify? A dice would be at least as good i think.
-
As the low approaches and pulls moisture into Europe it looks like there will be widespread heavy snow. Scandinavia could get buried. How does snow cover effect the block and do the models take this into account?
-
hoar frost is one of the most stunning things ive ever seen!
got down to -0.8oC according to my station here this morning.
currently 1.4oC
Agreed, i had to have a lie down

You would probably get a more accurate sports bulletin from the met office than you would get an accurate weather forecast from Sportstalk!
AS
I don't think so since the met don't provide sports casts however the met probably provide Sportstalks forecasts.

all this talk of "perfection" "as good as it gets" along with "expect downgrades" "we know it won't happen" etc. etc. etc.
what if?...... it upgrades............
We are all doomed, people across the country with their tongues stuck to lamp posts !

Quite right sir, well and truly told. Must learn more in this area. I'm not bad at chart reading but the daytime temps in a easterly flow, I just thought would be colder.
Agreed, without a good cold pool an Easterly can be over rated.
-
Really? I thought with an easterly flow and the wind chill effect even with -7 uppers we'd still achieve very low daytime maxima (1c'ish) or is there more too this than meets the eye? Or perhaps I'm just outright wrong.
The good thing with this though is that they are trending colder every run, I've noticed this as you said, they have trended a lot colder, I am not going to worry about the 850's anyway, as long as we get the Beast in the 850's will plummet and surely the surface cold it will create over Europe will help with the cooling?
Unless ive missed something here i don't believe windchill has any effect on the actual temp. It just makes it feel colder as the warm air from around your clothing is being blown away. Also a strong wind will cause moisture in your skin to evaporate faster and cause it to cool down.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results
-
The charts are looking cold and below average - I think some may have been expecting too much.
You are only going to get prolonged ice days ( a la 2010) in extreme circumstances in the UK. The Northern blocking is good and there are some decent sliders being modeled.
Below average and possibly snowy still looks the form horse!
Not forgetting 2009

Don't have a weather station in Warrington but my car thermometer says 1 degree.
-
Fine snow in Warrington after some heavier bursts earlier on. No sign of any melting.
-
The experienced people should be trying to work out how fantastic winter charts like these evaporate into a 6 hour toppler!
-
Just started again here in Warrington
mmmmm not here in Fearnhead...
-
Looking generally grey and overcast in Warrington with light snow. No blue in sight, i dont think this is a shower.

These quoted snow depths just seem bonkers. I don't think Warrington or St Helens has ever seen that depth of snow. I do remember 81 had accumulated quite a depth after many days of snow but that was in January. I hope i eat my words but 30cm for low ground in this area sounds a bit unrealistic.
