  1. Scattered sharp showers have been moving over during the day. Current one now over head producing the odd crack of thunder and very heavy rain. Time 16:20 S
  2. Hmmmm? 10-12-06 - Aberdeen – 3 18-12-06 - Newcastle – 2 10-01-07 - Peterborough – 2 20-01-07 - Abingdon – 1 06-02-07 - Dover – 2 07-02-07 - Aberystwyth – 2 18-02-07 - Reading – 2 18-02-07 - Lincoln – 4 01-03-07 - Derby - 2 S
  3. Afternoon, Just had a storm pass over which was a little unexpected (teach me to watch the beeb forecast! NW storm risk map shiows 60% for the SW). It has been a very grey, misty, dark overcast morning with no cloud definition. Storm came over about 13.00 and has passed over now. Fairly active lightning every 20 secs or so (mainly C-C I think) with moderate rain. Sky had darkened to the south and the storm appears to have then moved north or N/E but what low level cloud that is visible appears to be moving rapidly westwards towards the moors. Cheers S Edit - Opps, just looked at the beeb web site and they do indeed have a Tstorm forecast. Must have been watching an outof date news 24 forecast late last night or not paying attention!
  4. Sorry Mods, started a new thread at the same time as katie. Could you please merge my storm report to this thread? S
  5. Morning Thundery showers/rain have been passing over since 5.30am. A very elongated cell has been moving over since about 9am and heading NW up the M5 corridor, plenty of activity in this one with strikes (mainly cloud to cloud i think) every 20 seconds or so. Blue sky to the west but other cells can be seen to the SW, Think it may be a busy day in the SW? Cheers S Opps started this at the same time as Katie! Mods please merge this into the first thread. Thanks S
  6. Afternoon, Is there a problem with the uk satellite images? Currently displaying corrupted data from the 14/06. cheers S
  7. Yes i'm also stuck on may 30th for the regional ensembles. Cheers S
  8. Morning The regional GFS ensembles seem to be stuck on output from last Wed (3rd of may). Is there a glitch or a problem at my end? Cheers sean
  9. Afternoon, Wet snow on/off through most of the very early morning. Slushy deposits on cars, grass and roofs, which is melting slowly. Has been fairly clear for most of mid morning but just had a light 5 min snow flurry (started ca 12.10). From the radar i would suggest most of east devon will be clear now but maybe showers might pep up during early afternoon. Astonished that this has fallen as snow in low level parts of exeter, especially in november!!! S
  10. Yep is a rarity. 3 yrs round st james park, uni student by any chance? Last time i saw any decent snow here in town was when i moved down as a 1st yr undergrad. (91/92).
  11. Morning, Showers have been passing over, mainly sleet when i checked (12.30am) which is now easing off to clear skies but some icy deposits on the cars suggest some wet snow earlier. Fairly low lying here so probably more wintery further in land. S 01.40 - Cloud moved rapidly over from the north at 1.30 and now have moderate snow. Settling on the cars but ground is too wet. NB - If i'm getting snow then it is fairly safe to assume any other percip in devon is likley to be of snow with the exception of costal areas!
  12. Cheers Steve - If it is a very stable pattern why is it so rare? S
  13. Not sure if it was a leap yera but could you technically double up on the 1st day of the month - i.e frost in the morning and a 2nd frost in the evening? S
  14. Thanks SF - And with that i turn to Mr Murr's teleconnections guide and suddenly i feel the need for a lie down.........................! Seriously though, i feel many users are like me and would really benifit from a very simple layman's guide (with diagrams pls!?) as to what the jet stream(s) are (eg polar, ferrell cell explained) and how they function. I'm asking a lot perhaps, but a basic reference would be great. Cheers S
  15. Splendid - thanks for the response Evo. I was begining to guess it was something along the lines of a standing wave pattern from what i could tease out of google but this makes things clear. It has also helped to clarify to me what meridonal/zonal/rossby terms are, which i was a bit fuzzy about, thanks. Do these waves tend to move west to east around the hemisphere or can they stay locked on a longitude until the jet then flattens out?
  16. Evening, I'm not wishing to to hex anything or to count my chickens (blah blah) but the forecast cold spell looks pretty much set in stone now, even if it's severity is still very much open to debate. So i was wondering what may lead to the eventual breakdown in this pattern and what signs should we be looking for? I presume that previous north alantic blocks (eg 80's and 63) eventually came to end basically because of the onset of spring (inreases in solar energy input??) but this is very early in the season so how could things pan out??? Steve mentiond a 4 wave pattern! I have no idea what this is and as there were not many replies (Unable to open max pb's lnk for some reason) i was wondering if someone could give a simple answer (my google search was not much help either! -a fluid dynamics/physics term??) Cheers S PS -Thought i would post here as i fear this question would get buried in the end of november thread, plus i'm thinking longer term. OK - Still searching google but I wil now hazard a guess that it is some kind of standing wave in the jet stream?????
  17. Afternoon, Small storm has just passed over exeter. Hazy morning with increasing cloud towards afternoon. Now very hazy with a fair amount of low/mid level stratus so difficult to make out any detail. Darkening of sky to southwest (torbay) around 2pm and has now moved overhead and looks like moving along the M5 corridor towards taunton and north devon. Very little of rain but a fair amount of lightning with some ground strikes towards the western side of exeter. Cheers S Edit - Some rain followed the storm around 15.30-16.00. Dry & overcast now but cloud cover beging to break.
  18. Yep very informative John, thanks. I had never heard of a skew T diagram until i stumbled upon this forum topic. Keep these tutorials going as it looks like there is a lot of information contained in these that will require a good deal of explaining. I also think brickfielders suggestion of attaching legends & pointers would help a lot. S
  19. Clouds around exeter have been building since noon. Now very dark but have not had much in the way of heavy rain but looks very grim over towards dartmoor/torbay.
