  1. Was just walking home and it's sleeting now. Still yet to see a proper snowflake this winter! But optimistic some severe evaporative cooling might occur or something
  2. Was a terrific frost this morning. Temps went below -5, the ducks were sitting down on the lake and everything looked beautiful outside. So it's all pretty insulting that it's now started drizzling! Would like to say it's even sleet but no just plain old rain. Think it's about time we had a last minute upgrade rather than a last minute downgrade but temps don't look to be wanting to go below 3C tonight in Reading.
  3. It seems the one time the temperatures looks low enough then the precipitation disappears altogether! Still some snow forecast for Reading but about 8 hours less than they were forecasting an hour ago. I'm studying meteorology for a degree, yet at the end of four years at times like these I'll have not much more of a clue than anyone else. It really is a 'wait and see on the day' with snow in the south east, which is something about this country's weather I both love and hate.
  4. My friend has just rung me up to express his disgust at how BBC weather has one minute gone from snow most of the day to 'just cloud'. He says he's going to ring up the Met Office There's not another subject like it!
  5. Unfortunately I didn't actually see one snowflake this morning! I woke up to see some on the roofs and cars I thought it was just frost at first. My dad brought a snowball in I'd forgotten what it felt like..!
  6. Well after a dusting (if you can even call it that) of snow on the cars and roofs this morning it's now all gone. Temperature quickly up to 3.6 from a low of -1.6 (lower than expected) and very light rain coming down now. The radar is saying sleet but nothing wintry right now.
  7. Back in Ealing, London for the weekend. Temperature now below freezing earlier than expected which is a positive! BBC Weather can't make up it's mind what it wants to forecast precipitation wise for us tomorrow morning, but I am optimistic I will see my first snowflake since March 2013 tomorrow. Will be up early watching the radar. Settling snow can wait for next week! *EDIT* Regarding next week after a brief look in the MOD thread it has now become apparent all hope for a slider low bringing an Easterly next week is gone, and Winter is over again until the next huge flip in the models.....
  8. still plenty of daylight here. First time since November that I haven't needed any light on yet at 4:30. Onwards and upwards! Been an interesting afternoon... with sun, torrential rain, sun and rain together...... neither at times. Feeling very cold in the wind which is still quite strong.
  9. chucking it down now at last with the strongest winds yet. Glad I'm back indoors now tbh; the wind chill is not nice. And if this evening wasn't exciting/fearsome enough then we've got an interesting northerly over the weekend that could bring snow showers followed by a freezing cold easterly next week which all makes for very happy reading on the MOD thread.
  10. Clouded over quicker than expected here after a cold and breezy but bright morning. But it's an interesting sky as the cloud cover is mostly cirrus and cirrostratus at the moment so it's a blueish grey. Wet and very windy weather on its way which I can find exciting, except when I have to do training this evening outside in it.
  11. BBC weather do seem to be downgrading snow potential in the early hours ever so slightly, but imo it is at the time now that it's almost worth not looking at that site anymore and instead looking out the window whilst noting the temperature!
  12. Decided that it is worth getting up at 6am tomorrow as the worst case scenario is I get a couple more hours in bed! Like others not expecting anything to settle unless we get a very heavy burst but will be nice to (hopefully) see a snowflake for the first time in too long. Suspect this thread will be busy with reports in the early hours!
  13. Raining heavily here in Reading. But hopefully a different type of precipitation in 24 hours plus! Glad I'm back for the new term as it seems to improve my chances of seeing a snowflake drastically from living in London over holidays.
  14. I know everyone is very much aware but blimey is it 'warm' out there. I'm not sure we've ever had temperatures this high in January overnight, but feel free to prove me wrong! Love the random collection of noises that the strong wind gusts make.
  15. Plenty of sunlight today up until about 2:30 when the sun might as well have set an hour and a half early it clouded over so quickly! Walked the dog this morning without a coat and didn't regret it even with some very strong gusts. Temperature as warm as it's been all day, at 13.6 C right now. Back at university in Reading on Monday so gutted I haven't seen any snow this winter whilst at home!
  16. More than ten millimetres of rain this morning in 3 hours then opened up to a nice afternoon. A bit on the windy side but sunny and almost warm enough to not wear a coat I couldn't complain. Does anyone know if there's any possibility of wintry weather thursday next week on into the weekend? I think the GFS parallel suggested it yesterday but when the MOD thread is people either saying 'Winter is Over' or 'exciting cold period upcoming' right next to each other it gets confusing!
  17. I believe I just saw the sun, but I think I might have been hallucinating...... Came out of nowhere. Whilst the weather may be relatively uninteresting in the coming days it's still amazing how unique this country is in our ability to go from heavy rain one minute then sunshine the next. That's 2 more minutes of sun to add to the January record. Wowzers
  18. I thought it was the middle of the night when I woke up it's that dark here. An extremely damp and dull day, temp now at 5 degrees still quite nippy. 7.3mm of rain overnight with more expected.
  19. Well I played some football for 2 hours early this afternoon, and despite the fact it was a couple of degrees warmer than at any point these last few days the wind made it absolutely freezing (so much so i couldn't do the zip on my jumper up afterwards for my cycle home). But the temp has now risen further and it's feeling very 'warm' out there at the moment now! nearly 13 degrees o.O with a high of 14 predicted at 3am....... Bring back the crisp sunshine forget snow for now!
  20. Just reached above freezing here now, having been the coldest night of the year at -3.3. And a lovely frost to go with it. Very nice day out!
  21. 2 degree Celsius drop here in the last 20 minutes. Not exactly a Chinook wind but still pretty snappy! Some really strong gusts in the last hour too. May not have the snow here but exciting weather none the less.
  22. Well some potentially exciting weather to come in the early hours of the morning as the temperature should fall away from a horrible 9C to around 3C here in the space of 2 and a half hours. Potential for a flurry or two, but as Kent Blizzard says above I think it's not quite worth staying up for as I may find myself just staring out the window at branches moving about in the wind! Has anyone got much of a clue as to the rough path of any showers tomorrow?
  23. Birmingham seems to be the place to be this evening with the BBC forecasting heavy snow from 7pm. Living in London myself I almost celebrated when I saw an hour of sleet forecast in contrast!
  24. Don't know if anyone uses the NSIDC (National Snow and Ice Data Centre) much for sea ice data. (I'm sure a lot of you might use it but just in case you don't). It only covers ice levels rather than snow but I find some of their analysis very interesting and quite a good read. It's unfortunately only updated once a month and sometimes twice, but it's very concise with lots of data, and not too complex either! http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/. Sea ice extent has stalled a bit in recent days but Eurasian snow cover in particular still relatively impressive!
  25. Link is working again! Snow cover has definitely melted significantly in Western Russia as expected but still decent for the time of year I believe
