Pretty hard to tell form the photo, hence the "ish". Not to mention that those depths are on the road, the grass should be much deeper.

Time's certainly have changed... I remember on the railways BR used to have to pay for a taxi (or even a hotel room) if the train didn't complete its journey. It happened to me and I got a freeby 25 mile taxi ride home.
Haven't these employers heard of the internet? In 'extreme' weather the police advise people to only travel if their journey's essential... makes less work for them when they're flat out. And what happens if having struggled in they can't get home again (quite likely with more snow on the way tomorrow) I'd expect the employer to book hotel rooms for the stranded staff. As for keeping an eye on those with children what happens if the school's shut? 5 year olds home alone?
It was well forecast, it wasnt a surprise. Heres some news for you: you are expected to deal with it, in such a way that you can carry out your normal duties for which you are employed.
After all, you expect me to continue to employ you through a not so well forecast and deep recession, dont you?

Mind you, if everyone is having a day off school every time it snows, no wonder you cant estimate height/depth reasonably.
Its still not enough to be "snowed in" to warrant a day off work, and this is clearly an exceptional case.

Yes. Of course! It was widely forecast and wont come as any great surprise to anyone. Not harsh, just being a realistic dude in these tough times, Im afraid.
And Im not alone. In a recent seminar, most employers touted snow absence as a great test of staff loyalty.

Yes, indeed me too. And I need my staff to make it happen. And they know it.
Now show me a proper, non-marginal, non "will it wont it turn to rain" scenario, with 6 FEET of snow, and I might just give some leeway. But this event, with no more than a few inches, with all that grit thrown over the roads for about the last week, really simply doesnt cut it for the day off.
I've really got my eye on those staff with young kids....

Yes, you were never likely to get much west of London - looks like work will be ON tomorrow - and that being the case, I think you must be mad at nearly 2am waiting for snow -- you WILL have to get up early and go in!
Having said that, as a guv'nor, even in the SE here, I will expect all my employees in, on time in the morniing. In the modern age, there's really no excuse for tardiness or absence even in this "significant" event.
Yes, it looks great out of a North or East facing window in the middle of the night, but the main roads are all clear, even now, and by the end of the rush in the morning in all major routes it will be churned up enough for anyone who *wants* to work, to work.
Hope your guv is more forgiving than me. NOW GET SOME SLEEP READY FOR THE WORKING DAY TOMORROW!!!
Remember, in these hard times, the snow slackers will be the first to go! There's nothing romantic about that, despite the snowy scene outside....!

None of this is in a reliable timeframe; therefore I remain unconvinced.
I am not the only one because all the 5 day+ weather forecasts one can find online, and especially the 7 day ones (which of course include the suggested/modelled cold spell) - NONE of them are showing anything more than a bit of sleet for the SE...

Nothing in the South-East, as expected. Unless you call a frosty start a "White Christmas"!
Funny, a week ago, we were all going to be waking up to a white Christmas morning. Seems confined to the mountains of Scotland (nothing really unusual in that!)
Wonder if I will EVER see such a thing [because of all the false starts, etc etc, wont be happy until I wake up on Xmas to see snow of January 1981 proportions [Remember that in Kent, anyone?] ]

No, but Cambs, Beds, Herts, Kent et al have all been disrupted by snow at least in living memory.
Simply put, you are too near the city heating effect (I'm sorry I dont recall its correct meteorological name right now).
And really, tonight of all nights, snow wasnt even in the forecast for this neck of the woods, let alone the smoke, so I dont know why you are so disappointed.
