have some patience - 850 temps will drop further as we go through the night - showers will be more of snow for you then and according to GFS you are right in the firing line as the winds to a firm northerly tomorrow

Thanks andymusic :), I'll keep the faith a bit longer.

  2. It's really wild here now, my boyfriend has a tree down in his garden and all I can hear is the trees roaring and the slates rattling on my roof.  I'm out in the sticks so thankfully not too much in the way of wheelie bins etc flying around.  The wind is making pretty wave ripples in the grass though and it's funny watching the birds fly backwards!

  3. Was in Holyhead earlier today and there was a belter of a snow shower going on. Started off with the little polystyrene balls type to big fat snow flakes.  Didn't last long though and didn't stick except for on grass verges.

Been reading a lot about this polar low and that it will come down the Irish sea, I'm a bit (well a lot) confused as the Met Office yellow warning is for near enough the whole country except for flipping Anglesey again.  Does anyone know why this is?  Does this polar low have something against us? lol  Glad to see a lot of you have seen some snow at last :)

  4. Lot of inland showers developing over Wales, won't be safe on the A470 through Powys!

I thought the same thing, we are on the top left quarter of that map and part of Wales hits the left border of the picture.

    Ah ok thank you.

  5. can't see how you are gonna struggle too much to get snow on Anglesey with the projected wind direction etc

Ooh thank you :D Might allow myself to get a little bit excited this time round then.  Ended up bitterly disappointed last time.

  6. The GFS weather type/snow risk/snow level charts are all just a bit of fun and almost always turn out to be inaccurate as the time comes closer, be that for increasing or decreasing chances of snow.

Better to look at a combination of other charts such as wet bulb level, dew points and the upper temperatures.

    attachicon.gif15012906_2_2606 (1).gif

Uppers for early Thursday, -7/-8c across Wales (as a rare guide from this type of situation, -5/-6 uppers can be sufficient)

The wet-bulb is the lowest temperature to which air can be cooled by evaporation, often important in determining whether it will rain or snow at or near the surface.

    attachicon.gif15012906_2_2606.gif

For Thursday am, this down to below 200 metres for all of Wales also suggesting snowfall even to lower levels.

Dew points are below freezing for all, also supporting snowfall to low levels.

    attachicon.gif15012912_2_2606.gif

Thickness also supportive of snowfall, ideally you want it light blue or darker for a good chance of seeing snow.

So don't get too hung up on snow chances end of the week yet. North and west Wales will most likely see the most precipitation and therefore the highest risk of snow.

Thursday will come under high resolution euro4 tomorrow morning so we will have a better idea then.

Great post, explains everything nicely to a newbie like me.  Bit concerned about the dew points for Anglesey though, guessing that means rain for us again?

  7. In the last half hour the precipitation over Anglesey seems to be turning more to sleet or snow according to radar

Radar is a liar with regards to my little bit of Anglesey lol.  Had a bit of rain but that's it really.

  8. Lol same... I have a slight feeling it will be rain or sleet at its best we will see in caernarfon though :(.. Which part of anglesey are you?

In between Llanfachraeth and Llanfaethlu.  So frustrating being a snow obsessive right now :(

  9. What's the chances of snow settling in lower grounds of north west wales this coming cold spell??

Would love an answer to this too.  My nerves are well and truly jangled with all the will it won't it in our little part of Wales lol.  Someone in the mod thread mentioned a low in the Irish sea that could give us a good result but i don't really know what all these charts mean tbh.  Can anyone explain it please? :help:

  10. Hi all, very new to all this and a complete noob but could someone post a chart (historical or otherwise) that would show what I should be looking out for if I wanted to see snow on Anglesey please?  Apart from Dec 2010 and Jan 2013 we always seem to miss out and a better understanding would certainly be more beneficial than the snow dance I do every winter (worries my neighbour something rotten that does!)
