Heay snow and big flakes here, in South Aberdeenshire
-
Very heavy snow here, big flakes, couple of inches fallen

Yes snowfall amounts this autumn in much of our mountainous parts of europe is significantly below average - not thanks down to the stubborn euro high. The Highlands have seen barely any snow so far this season - earlier snowfall around the 17th October quickly got washed away and there has been nothing since. In an average autumn you would have expected a couple of doses of polar air by now giving a few coverings of snow to the highest ground and remaining in situ.
The Alps must be doing very porrly and scandi also. Looks like the eastern mountains such as carparthians will do well in the coming days. West Russia will retain its snowfall. Scandi looks like seeing some snow at long last in the coming days and with some cooler uppers moving in - this should stick, but southern parts of scandi including southern/west norway will remain free of snow.
Encouraging though is the level of snowfall over russia as a whole - and this is a much more important factor than snow over scandi as it can influence the development of colder patterns upstream.
Most of the early season skiing events are now cancelled due to the lack of snow in Scandinavia

Here is a link to my weather station in Aberdeenshire if anyone wants to find out live weather in the area and see how cold it gets. Just getting started with it so some of the readings are a bit odd, but the live ones should be ok. Currently 4.9 at the moment.

I put this video up on the regional thread. Didn't realise this thread was here!
There was no wind so the rumble is the thunder the whole time. Hope you enjoy.

Good stuff, as a regular visitor to the German middle mountains I love keeping an eye on this thread. Notice that there is 15 cm snow forecast in Scandanavia today and it is snowing on the Finland Road cams. Good to see and this is earlier than last year.

I was really surprised how cold it was here this morning. 0 degrees at home dropping to -3 degrees towards Aboyne. Dont think it was forecast to be so cold.
-
Snowing on the way home tonight then froze over. Roads are very slidy
-
Very heavy rain and wind at sea level here, but heavy snow inland.
-
Few inches here this morning, but main problems being caused by fog and the temperature. It was -7 when I left home. The roads, particularily the side roads are really bad. I saw 3 cars off the road in 10 miles.
-
It is currently snowing here at the moment. It is -2.2.

Very heavy snow in Stonehaven (at sea level) for the last 30 mins and it is lying. Really big flakes so I am gettng no work done watching it!

Drove over the Slug Road to work as usual this morning, the view was amazing, completely white from the Cairn O' Mount right up as far as the eye could see. The snow started at 0820 and sitting in the office now in Banchory where there was no snow when i arrived on the ground, now there is about an inch, very large snow flakes been falling for about 20 mins. One of my friends at work travels over the Cairn O'Mount and it is closed due to snow. Its looking very promising here, yet again another good Aberdeenshire snowfall...keep it coming
It is even snowing heavily here at sea level in Stonehaven! Not lying except on the cars though.

I see from the ice charts that the ice is still increasing and is almost level with 2002. Does this have any bearing on the early cold spells we have been seeing?

Hi Jack One
You were kindly including Oberhof in the German middle mountains last year for me. Is is possible to still consider German resorts as I am planning on visiting reguarily this year?
Many Thanks

Hi
I just purchased a weather station (pretty basic but fine for me!)
Sorry for what are no doubt stupid questions but can someone keep me right on what to look out for on the following:
Outside Humidity - What should I be looking for for interesting weather? For example if it is going to snow should the humidity be high?
Inside Humidity - What is comfortable!
What is the dew point (in simple terms)
Pressure Hpa - What am I looking at for interesting weather? It is currently 1008.8!
Rainfall - How many millimetres constitutes a deluge!?
Sorry again as I am sure some of you are banging their head against a wall reading this!
Many thanks

Hi
I dont post much as I dont understand the technicalities, however I am an avide reader. I am sure that everyone has an opinion about global warming, however I don't think this thread is for it.
Can I ask what is probably a silly question. If there is 10% more ice this year on the surface does that mean it is likely to be a colder winter?
-
Hi Connlach, latest model output indicates a fairly prolonged period of cold weather setting in this week across Germany, but with high pressure set to become the dominant feature, there is unlikely to be much snowfall I'm afraid. Hope that helps.
Thanks Paul for the reply. Looks like I will have to keep everything crossed for some white stuff!

I am going to the Biathlon world cup in Oberhof in the middle mountains in Germany this year and again there is very little snow. Does anyone know the likelyhood of some colder weather between now and the 1st January?
Thanks for any help.

I hear the first ski races in Finland have been cancelled for next weekend due to the warmest early winter weather for decades. They have been moved to Reitalm in Austria.

Really heavy snow here just now, really big flakes. Tried to get to work but the roads are so bad had to give up. The snow has frozen solid. Lots of crashes on A90 Northbound and even saw a police car 4x4 in a ditch!
