Bit difficult to have a cold haters club in Britain. We barely know what real cold is. Lol
And when you think about it even though December 2010 was likely the coldest for 100 years or something like that places like Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, the Baltic's get those sorts of temps that we had every single winter. It shows just how pathetic and mild our winters are in general when we have to wait decades to have a similar experience.

Certainly a chilly feel to things coming up, well you can feel it now with this clear fresh air that's arrived. Next to no pollution sourced from a northerly. Probably no rain in the forecast for a week by the looks of things. Still the chance of a frost in prone spots over the next couple of mornings but this depends on cloud cover. But it's very useable to do outdoors stuff tidying up ready for the Winter without breaking into a sweat or going for walks.... not muddy!

Losing a lot of daylight now. Still not quite in the dark half of the year, I'd say that is when we start to have less than 12 hours of equal daylight but we're steadily approaching it which begins on the 26th of this month here. And stays that way until 19th March when we start to have more than 12 hours.

A rarity in this warm year, a period of below average temps ahead, quite a bit so as well, expected highs 13-15 degrees, and mins 4-8 degree range, take the mean value of 14 and 6 degrees and you have a return of 10 degrees, some 4-5 degrees below average mid Sept mean.
Yes Saturday morning in particular looking a bit chilly. Some of us in more frost prone spots could very well have an air frost or at the least close to it. The only fly in the ointment I see is cloud cover, wind looking calm or very light. I do wonder if the sluggish Atlantic could usher us into a more sustained colder than normal period. That's it I've jinxed it now. Somethings got to give though because we was so unlucky last year with that area of HP parked to our south most of Winter. It could have been a cold winter otherwise.

Getting a bit fed up of minimum temps in the high teens now. Cannot wait until the end of the week where lows dip into single figures, always a refreshing change!
Dipped to 5C here this morning. Felt nice and Autumnal first thing. Temp quickly rose up though but 17C is fine in the sun no silly warmth lingering.

5.7C was the low here this morning. Certainly that Autumnal feel now in the air, at least first thing in the day. Looking at the synoptics I wouldn't be surprised to see temps close to zero here this week if not just scraping an air frost. Not unheard of in September but certainly not an every year thing. Recorded two in 2005 with these synoptics. Manchester airport got down to 1C so not quite an air frost down there.
This year...

As Don has already said - yes there was. We were a bit unlucky in 2020/21. We got a pretty decent setup on the back of the SSW but there is still an element of luck to how things pan out and a really cold draw eluded us. It was chilly - there was a bit of white stuff around but a proper white out away from the usual favoured spots there was not!
Still - bring on the hunt. I have become much less optimistic than I was 10 years ago and have seen much less snow than was the case in my memorable younger days roughly 1979 to 1996 when good snow falls arrived on and off as the seasons rolled at a fairly decent rate.....but even in a warming world surrounded by heating oceans there is still that outlier year to hope for. 2010 took everyone by surprise. 2018 was glorious in its downwelling vortex chaos. Roll on the next moment of sheer barking madness.
Haha yes why do we do it to ourselves? Get to now with these longer nights and I start to really look forward to the chase even if it's futile!

Temps going a bit below average this week as colder air filters down from the north, with the longer nights now there's a good likelihood of grass frost for inland valleys in our region should skies remain clear overnight as morning temps get into the low single digits. Certainly below zero for the Scottish glens with air frost.

Chucking it down here. Looking at the automated forecast by the met office it's probably gonna carry on for most of tomorrow in this locality

Uppers probably won't get much colder than this all winter. You gotta laugh.

Only thing that stood out for me in 83 was that blisteringly hot July. Only July 1995 and 2006 comes close to that especially the latter.

It will be interesting to see the difference when I travel back home tomorrow. Looks like I’ve missed a lot of rain.
Some lovely pics of Scarborough I took today, yesterday and the day before. The sea was really rough yesterday. Had a nice meal in an Italian restaurant. Saw a lovely cat sat in a shop window and came across an extremely tame grey squirrel. It came right up to me.
Another nice day today. Mostly sunny with a high of around 19 degrees. Felt very warm during the afternoon.
Going back home to boring old Lancashire tomorrow (sigh).
Looks like you've had a good time Nice pictures, I like Scarborough and it's curving bays, great place for some nice food as well - clearly you've made the most of that too don't blame you.

One rumble of thunder today. But safe to say the drought is over (for now) after some much needed rain over the last few days. Everywhere now looking much more greener.

Just want to say RIP to Her Majesty The Queen. 70 years of public service but it was clear she wasn't the same person after her husband died. Her health steadily went downhill. I was born when her father King George VI was still alive but I was only two when he died so like most people in this country all I've known & remembered was Queen Elizabeth II. Certainly an end of an era today.

In my eyes it's entirely plausible we see a cold trough scenario this coming winter with us sitting towards the N of the PFJ. This would allow cold air to be sucked into the N side of LP crossing the UK.
That's why I'm thinking of booking a few days in the Scottish Highlands some point in the winter when a proper heavy snowfall is expected. Hopefully good photos and interesting walking conditions should conditions be met.

Nothing here either, well no thunder but it has been raining in the last half hour. Non event up to now. I have noticed though over the years is that for whatever reason western parts of the region seem to do better with thunderstorms but on the flip side we do better for snow over here.

After heavy showers this morning we've been too far east this afternoon/evening so far for any thundery stuff. Looks dark to the south though.
Looks wet in Stockport town centre.

Reservoirs should get some much needed rain. Weather app showing dry right now here. Unless I'm going mad and hallucinating what I see outside and on the radar the reality is more like this

Torrential rain and sudden gusts has just arrived here but no thunder, electrification seems to have weakened as it's moved north. Good job I witnessed last night's thunder or I'd have not recorded any overhead this year.

If that belt of intense precip stays intact it should get here in about an hour or so. Looking juicy.

Bang on 5C was the low here, temp was up and down on my graph with passing cloud cover. Chilly wind today but the sun still has just about enough ooomph to feel ok if you are in it and sheltered from the gusty breeze. It'll have to ease off tonight if there's going to be a frost or close to one.
Some interesting charts later in the month. Of course way too early for snow but the chilly charts relative to the time of year keep being churned out. If only this was 2 months down the line. No doubt we'll have a raging PV by then!
