Hope I never hear the words beast from the east again. Utter tosh!! And these warnings as iv said all winter for the east have been horrific. Friday looks a no go going by bbc weather now. Roll on spring. ?

It's not over yet Negative Nelly!  Anything could happen.  I can remember the forecast for 21st of March 2013 being mediocre and look what happened on the day here on the East coast......

  2. Cut and paste from Metalert Ireland in Facebook just now.  Hope they are right ?

    SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
TIMELINE: MON 26TH FEB TO SAT 3RD MARCH +
    AREA: NATIONWIDE
HIGH RiSK AREA: LEINSTER, EAST ULSTER, N TO E MUNSTER
We continue to urge the public to call in on elderly/vulnerable neighbours and ensure they are aware of the severe cold and severe weather outlook over the course of the coming 7 or more days. Ensure fuel, food and medication stocks last a minimum of 7 days.
We have upgraded our advisory from 70% risk to 100% risk of severe weather with severe disruption likely in high risk areas mentioned above.
Daytime weather values will gradually get colder with Tuesday to Sat the highest risk days of disruption. Highest temps will remain sub zero in many areas by day with areas under snow cover seeing even colder temps of -3c to 0c. Nighttime values will see lows of -4c to -10c with coldest values where snow cover exists. Where no snow cover exists temps will range by day 4c to 1c.
The windchill factor by mid week through to Saturday will be exceptionally cold with feel like values ranging from -5c to -12c by day in a brisk easterly wind.
In terms of snow and accumulations we expect between 5cm to 10cm daily from Tuesday through Saturday but this will depend on your location and due to the nature of sea streamers it will be a nowcast situation and these approx amounts are only a daily guideline of what to expect and are subject to change at short notice.
We will begin to roll out individual advisories for each day from Sunday (tomorrow) evening.
Lastly its essential our pets are kept indoors during the coming week.
We are aware that government bodies (OEP, HSE, DOD, DOH)) and several charities have plans in place for our homeless citizens. Check with your local TD(s) for further information.
Lastly continue to monitor your national and local weather forecast over the coming 7 days as this is an evolving weather situation and will be subject to change even at very short notice. Make sure your home/business is winter ready before Monday evening.
NOTE: This cold weather outbreak could last well beyond next weekend.

Here’s a pic of the water frozen behind me.  (Scundered lol)

Also, for anyone interested, here’s a video someone took from 2010 showing the lovely scenes around NI in 2010. Just beautiful - lovely freezing but sunny days. I know we aren’t exactly in the same set up but every winter I’ve always hoped we could relive something like that. Being 30 - that was the major winter for my time.

    Poor ducks!  Looks amazing.

How’d Mallusk fair in 2010? I didn’t live here then - lived up in castlereagh hills - can’t remember much of 2010 lol - I do remember Victoria park frozen over and going with my dad for a walk .. venturing on to the sides of the frozen lake - really stupid of me but didn’t go far. Funny - I was looking at pics my dad took that day - lovely bright crisp freezing day

Please share a picture, I'd love to see Vic Park like that. I've only ever seen a thin layer of ice there. I walk the dogs and run there regularly.

  5. I am wondering how warnings work for NHS and other vital Workers. I work for NHS in community and do on call day and night. In March 13 a lot of my colleagues struggled to reach their patients for days, some of our work is life critical. Whilst I'm aware no one wants to call it too soon, and even if it doesn't happen, it would be good to be on standby. A very worthwhile exercise is to discuss what to do if roads are unpassible, which I did with my team members today who all said 'but the Belfast Telegraph said....!'

if current model output continue I'd like to see something like the current public health warning provided by the MET extended to NI....

So y’all know I live up Mallusk at back of cavehill - 180-200ms. Should I seriously be considering stocking up on some things? I have trouble getting out of my street (steepish enough hill) after small snow showers and during some heavy frost. If there’s any chance of significant snow I reckon my area could be extremely difficult to get in and out of. It would be a case of leaving my car on the main road about ¾mile away and hiking up and down. Am I being extreme lol? Private development with no gritters and 1 grit box that’s prob empty from the winter. Steep hill as only entrance to development.

We have a snow shovel bought at end of last snow period last month (lol still sitting in my partners car unused). Prob top up gas if we can’t get our wood burner fixed before Tues (would prefer the burner as I’ve loads of wood but it’s dangerous atm?)

Basically I don’t know how much of a threat the east coast of NI faces. I understand the cold is locked in and I’m jealously reading the regional forums in England but not sure of relevancy for here.

Prob just getting caught up in the drama and wishful thinking ? But would still be nice to prepare just incase.

Snowydog my good friend lives not a million miles from you.  One bad spell her car was trapped in her cul de sac for over a week. The cul de sac is down in a dip and other people had abandoned their cars as they too couldn't get out.

I'd personally plan ahead and buy a few wee extras in like tinned goods that won't go to waste, some UHT milk and extra bread for the freezer and wine!!! At least that's one thing that you wouldn't have to worry about if we did get a good dumping.... you can just sit back and lamppost watch instead!

Think I'll start stocking up on coal and essentials. Anyone in rural areas near the East coast should take heed, I would expect power outages and heavy drifts blocking roads and rail.

I'm always prepared (too much scout blood in me apparently)..... and I only live in Belmont!

I am concerned about my recently widowed mum and elderly aunt who live separately in the country outside Lisburn. I think I might say something to them today to ensure they have enough coal, oil and food in.

20mm would be welcome in East Belfast,  I'm not a high maintenance sort of a girl, quality not quantity ?
