  1. March and April (excluding 3 days mid month) of 2018 were awful, though May was very good. 2008 was similar, Mar/Apr were bad with a warm and sunny May. 2021 had a very warm last day of March (23.8c), which was only exceeded on the last day of May (24.1c). April was exceptionally cold, if sunny, and May was poor as well.
  2. The average warmest day of each spring month here is as follows... Mar: 17.6c Apr: 22.1c May: 26.2c In the last week of April now and we have failed to record the typical max temp for March.
  3. 1996 had a very sunny June, with average July and August. 2010 had a warm and sunny June, a warm and cloudy July, and one of the worst Augusts ever. 2016 had the cloudiest June on record, average July and good August (plus a very warm September).
  4. In recent years, poor springs tend to be followed by good summers. 1994, 1996, 2006, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2018 all had poor springs followed by mostly decent summers. 2008, 2012 and 2021 were poor springs followed by bad summers.
  5. August 2019 was as sunny as 2016 and warmer. It was easily the best one since 2003, until last August. Aug 2016: 24.7c/14.6c, 221 hrs Aug 2019: 25.2c/14.1c, 221 hrs August 2017 was awful.
  6. It was 31st May in 1983. Followed by a cool June, the warmest July on record at the time, and a warm August. The terrible Aprils of 2012, 2016 and 2021 all recorded warmer days than this month has.
  7. 25c is quite normal in summer in this part of the country. After this spring, I really hope we don't have a poor summer. Still no sign of 20c.
  8. May: 19c/10c, 40mm rain, 200 sun hrs Jun: 22c/12c, 20mm rain, 230 sun hrs July: 25c/14c, 30mm rain, 260 sun hrs Aug: 23c/15c, 80mm rain, 190 sun hrs Sep: 20c/13c, 70mm rain, 130 sun hrs Oct: 17c/9c, 20mm rain, 170 sun hrs Nov: 10c/4c, 10mm rain, 100 sun hrs Dec: 11c/5c, 80mm rain, 30 sun hrs
  9. 20c: 4th May 25c: 15th May 30c: 13th June (it's about time) 35c: 18th July
  10. My guesstimate of how this summer will go for the London area: June: 22c/12c, 20mm rain, 230 sun hrs July: 25c/14c, 30mm rain, 260 sun hrs August: 23c/15c, 80mm rain, 190 sun hrs In summary, June and July will have average to above average temperatures, sunny and dry. August will be thundery, wet and cloudy with average temperatures. Every month will record at least 30c, with a peak of 35c in July.
  11. I am back after a long hibernation! This April has actually been close to average in temperature and sunshine for London so far. April in London typically averages a 15c max with around 180 hours of sun, and looks like the month will finish close to those values. What has been unusual is how stable it has been. The warmest day has only reached 17.5c, compared to a typical 22c max for April. Seems like we will have to wait until May to see a 20c day, which is unusual.
  12. I requested them from the Met Office under a FoI request. I then compared each year to the raw values to create an average conversion factor so I don't have to request the real values every time. The monthly sunshine anomaly maps use the corrected value rather than raw values as a base.
  13. It's Heathrow. The values since 2007 are not the true values, they have to be multiplied by approx 1.12 to compare to the years before 2007, as the current sunshine recorder there under-reports. I have the corrected values since 2007 in a spreadsheet that the Met Office sent me last year, as I wanted to compare Kew Gardens to Heathrow since 2007 to see if there was indeed an issue with the Heathrow recorder. See attached the actual Heathrow values. Re: 1997, you are correct - I was looking at July by mistake. The next sunniest August in the list then becomes 2013 with 219 hours. 14. I believe that after today's sunshine totals are added, London will have overtaken the totals of Augusts 2016 and 2019, meaning that August 2022 will be the sunniest since 2005! Sunniest Augusts since 1991: 1995: 295 hrs 1998: 263 hrs 2003: 255 hrs 2005: 250 hrs 1991: 242 hrs 2016: 222 hrs 2019: 222 hrs 1993: 219 hrs 2022: 219 hrs (to 25th) 2013: 219 hrs
  15. The first 2 weeks of August in London have been amazing; an average high above 29c, 160 hours of sun and zero precipitation. Even if we have average conditions for the rest of the month, we could challenge the August 1995 sunshine totals (295 hours) and average max (27.0c).
  16. Interested to see whether it can match the 25C+ tally of 1976 or 1989. With 40 days above 25c up to yesterday, and the majority of the next 2 weeks looking like being around that value, plus all of September and October still to come, I'd be amazed if we don't beat the 1976 total this year. 1976 25c+: 58 days, 30c+: 21 days, 32c+: 10 days 1989 25c+: 55 days, 30c+: 8 days, 32c+: 2 days 2022 (to 14 Aug) 25c+: 40 days, 30c+: 11 days, 32c+: 7 days
  17. How this summer compares to previous good summers by avg max, sunshine and precipitation. June 1976: 25.5c, 261 hours, 6.3mm 1995: 20.7c, 188 hours, 11.1mm 2018: 24.2c, 267 hours, 0.4mm 2022: 23.2c, 242 hours, 26.0mm July 1976: 26.6c, 264 hours, 15.4mm 1995: 26.3c, 247 hours, 20.3mm 2018: 28.3c, 308 hours, 14.8mm 2022: 27.2c, 249 hours, 7.6mm August 1976: 25.1c, 264 hours, 16.4mm 1995: 27.0c, 295 hours, 0.3mm 2018: 24.5c, 204 hours, 48.2mm 2022: 28.3c, 119 hours, 0.0mm (after 11 days)
  18. Which is actually more like 119 hours. You have to multiply by 1.12 to get those raw values into something that can be compared to other locations, because the sun recorder there under-reads.
  19. Best since 1991 for London. 2018: 355 1995: 345 2022: 336 (to 10 Aug) 2006: 326 2003: 325 2013: 321 1994: 321 2005: 305 2014: 304 2019: 303 1996: 302
  20. I always leave cellar spiders alone as they eat false widows! A cold night for August overnight, with a low of 10.5c.
  21. All 3 autumn months were warmer and drier than average in 2011. A sunny September and October with a dull November.
  22. Heathrow's 4th warmest July by mean and average max. 2006: 28.2c / 22.5c 2018: 28.3c / 22.3c 1983: 27.6c / 21.8c 2022: 27.2c / 21.4c
  23. London's year so far updated to include July. July 2022 was the 4th warmest (+2.3c) and 3rd driest on record (17%), as well as being sunnier than average (114%).
  24. Every month so far this year has been sunnier than average here, with the exception of May which was very cloudy. June here was around 240 hours, with July 230ish so far. If August is sunnier than average (haha), then it'll be the first time since 2003 that all 3 summer months will have seen sunnier than normal conditions.
  25. The first half of September is warmer than the first half of June on average, and this has always been the case. September has fewer precip days than June as well on average, with 7 vs 8.
