WYorksWeather Depending on what you consider to be summer weather, I'd say most consider late May and most of September here to be an extention of summer anyway, with the vast majority of days above 20c. 2005 almost had 5 consecutive months with a 30c recorded, which was impressive because May was quite cool that year. It remains the last time we saw a 30c in May here.

Summer8906 June 1962, 1967 and 1969 were also cool and sunny months. June seemed to be the only month in the 1960s that was actually sunny at all, with generally most months being cool and cloudy for the entire decade. June 60-69 averaged 213.1 sun hours, which is higher than the current average of 208.4 hours. Every other month in the 60s was very dull.

Summer8906 May 2013 was even worse, with only 16.2c. The coldest Mays in the entire Heathrow record were 1984 and 1996, with 14.9c and 15.1c respectively! Cool and sunny summer months are rare but can happen in June and August. June 2008, August 2007 and August 1993 probably the best recent examples. I suppose August 2014 was another example here. Average max a chilly 21.7c but with 204 sun hours (vs the avg of 202). Cool and sunny Julys are very rare, with only 1985, 1977 and 1964 in the entire record. 1977 was borderline as well.

A few 22C sunny days mixed into the average week would not be an issue, however. For the Jun-Aug period, I'd go with the following, assuming standard light breeze and partly cloudy skies: <18: cold 18-21: cool 21-26: neutral 26-29: warm 30+: hot

WYorksWeather 20c days are pretty common in May (around 10 days on average), whereas something like 25c typically only happens on 2-3 days in May on average, and 27c maybe once a month. I'd consider 25-27c 'proper warmth' for May. I change what I would consider warmth based on the time of year; obviously in July, 20c would be poor and 25c pretty close to average.

WYorksWeather It's taken this long for something springlike to actually arrive. It's what I would expect as standard in May, so it better happen. Still no sign of any proper warmth though.

baddie The difference being that spring 2012 had a mostly settled and sunny March and 2nd half of May. 2024 hasn't had more than 1 or 2 settled days at a time. danm Today has seen just over 6 hours of sun here, which makes it the 5th sunniest day of the month. Shows how gloomy it has been when the typical April would be averaging about 6 hours of sun a day. The last 10 hour day was 14th September.

Created the anti 2008, which was probably the worst individual year since 2000 (even worse than 2021). Even with the colder start to the year, it ends up far superior to the real life 2008, which was a cold, dull and wet mess. July and August actually deliver summer like weather this time, while the decreased sunshine in June doesnt really matter as much once March, April, May, July, August and September actually deliver. Summer8906 I used the current averages to see how an anti-1954 or 1958 would end up today. The 61-90 average, which was one of the colder 20th century averages, was 7.1c for January. The 1900-1930 average high for January at Greenwich was 7.6c.

danm It was certainly far better than the cloudfests of 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2021. Summer 2019 was average for sunshine.

LetItSnow! Having the entire summer like the first half of June would have been catastrophic for the environment. Cool, wet and extremely dull throughout. More like a mild October than a summer month.
