  1. Wet misery and gloom continue. Horizontal drifting light ran and drizzle like yesterday. So far this month 169 mm (av 155.2 mm). 50 yr annual record was 1984.0 mm in 2012. Looks likely it will be beaten this year. Currently the total for 2020 is 1819.8 mm. Already the 4th wettest year. In the 1970s early 1980s we used to get about 1400 mm a year. Since 2000, 1600 - 1700 mm more common. This year's rain is extraordinary. Not surprising the countryside is at a sodden standstill.
  2. Picture at midday looking south towards Cheshire and Welsh Borders and beyond. Wondering if anyone can suggest why there were orange streaks. Might see such colours at sunset, but not middle of the day surely. Wind from west here at the time, but supsect those clouds were very high up and far away. Wondering about pollution or dust. earth :: a global map of wind, weather, and ocean conditions EARTH.NULLSCHOOL.NET See current wind, weather, ocean, and pollution conditions, as forecast by supercomputers, on an interactive...
  3. And a lot of water to go under the bridge before then! Just another 200mm needed to smash the annual record here (last 50 yrs records) and we are still in Nov!
  4. Still being attacked by rain showers. No sign of snow here. But overnight lowest minimm (4.1C) since late Sept. 17.5 mm in the gauge at 9GMT. Plenty of roses blooming.
  5. The wet weather this year has been enough to drive you to drink! Beastly showers this afternoon are still at it. We always have a spare bottle for the manual gauge and switch them each day. Easier to measure in a warm kitchen rather than outdoors in howling gale and rain. If you add up the rain from ex hurricane Epsilon, Storm Aiden and the side swipe from hurricane Zeta -- ie -just the last 4 days of data -- the total is 117.5 mm. A big contribution to yet another record breaking year. Annual total to date is 1712.5 mm -- 1984.0 mm to beat - record held by year 2012.
  6. Beefy showers since late morning. Interesting to see on radar how they develop over the Irish Sea.
  7. Measured 61.7mm from the manual gauge this morning at 9GMT for previous 24hrs. So we are not going to beat the driest Nov !! (IAN) Need to check -- but suspect that's the second wettest daily reading in last 50yrs. I do recall one over 70mm a long time ago. Sun peeping out at present -- hello!
  8. 65-68 mm in central Bowland fells today, recorded by automatic gauges near reservoir and water treatment sites. Rivers flooding. Problems currently Lancaster area. https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/river-and-sea-levels https://twitter.com/BBCLancashire/status/1322997043124723713 https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/259222.aspx
  9. Friend in Lunesdale, nr Carnforth, says his automatic gauge has recorded 38mm so far today since midnight.
  10. Does anyone know if today's vile weather in the NW was caused by a "Named Storm"? Has Aidan gone ? Zeta now in N Scotland says telly weather man. But what about us?
  11. Driest Nov was in 1993 with only 56.7 mm ! Same kit same site. We'll be not far off that by morning
  12. Heavy rain and strong wind continuing in the black dark. Sounds like the whole of the Atlantic is being thrown at us. October rain total was 262.3 mm. This was the third wettest October in last 50yrs. Beaten by 1980 with 374.0 mm and 2000 with 393.4 mm. October average is 158.0mm.
  13. Thumping it down here - as it has been most of the day. As so often, straight from Dublin to our back door.
  14. Western Cumbrian Fells had big rainfall yesterday also. Atlantic weather in full spate. But someone has to volunteer to face the onslaught and protect the rainshadows.
  15. Soaking up the deluges In the firing line at the Met Office rainall observation site at 150 m on the upslopes in SW Bowland. Collected 50.9 mm at 9GMT this morning for previous 24 hrs from manual gauge. Oct total so far 257.4 mm. Wettest months this year -- Feb 333.2 mm, June 194.5 mm, July 266.0 mm, August 200.0 mm. Year total so far 1645.9 mm 50 yr average 1481.1 mm Max 1984.0 mm in 2012.
  16. Another lovely day.. Max 18C. Wall to wall sun and more forecasted.. We deserve it after such a rotten summer.
  17. Air pollution caused by the Oregon wildfires is way above the hazardous scale in some places. Monitoring here. https://www.purpleair.com/map?opt=1/mAQI/a10/cC0#5.59/43.538/-122.114
  18. Appalling pollution in Oregon at present cause by the wildfires. Oregon's Governor warned yesterday that it's the worst in the world. https://www.windy.com/-PM2-5-pm2p5?cams,pm2p5,45.213,-110.435,4 The fierce east winds have stopped and though there is a forecast change to the more usual westerlies, it is only slow - indeed days away. So the air is almost static and the authorities mentioned an inversion trapping the poliution over the fire ravaged areas. The scale of all tis damage is incredible.
  19. Yes, hello, it's me Chrs. I had noticed you around too. Feeling very depressed at the state of farmland and buildings up here after this dreadfully wet cloudy summer. A long dry sunny spell would lift spirits and allow some catch up with work.
  20. Patchy drizzle and light rain on and on. Picked up 12.9mm this morning from the manual gauge on the Met Office site here. Already 38.4mm this month. Somewhere up there maybe there's a sun shining. Work on the land this summer has been so difficult. Crops poor in the wet sunless.conditiions. August total was 200.0 mm exactly. Total for June, July, Aug = 660.5mm. !! Did fellow residents in the NW see the charts here -- https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/binaries/content/assets/metofficegovuk/pdf/weather/learn-about/uk-past-events/summaries/uk_monthly_climate_summary_summer_2020_3.pdf
  21. Storm Francis - Picked up 37.3 mm from the manual gauge at 9 GMT for previous 24hrs. Aug total so far 194.2 mm. All on top of June 194.5 mm and July 266.0 mm. Only 5 wetter August totals since readings started here in 1968, but 2 will soon be beaten if we have some heavy showers.
  22. Met Office shipping forecast at 6pm gave centre of low as 979 mb. Was then in N Irish Sea east of IOM. Where did it come ashore? Somewhere in Morecambe Bay?
  23. Clip just now from Windy.com. Wales sheltering us perhaps.
