Scientists advising the government say an aggressive new approach adopted to attempt to "suppress" the virus may have to be in place for 18 months.

Well that's not true is it. They gave us the figures on TV the other day, and doing the math it was estimated about half a million could die.

I still have faith we are doing the right thing. My cousin has it, he is in his 40s, but hes almost over it now

It has come from the Imperial College report, they are advising the govt. Worst case scenario is 250,000 deaths. If this report is not all over the papers tom, and news this eve, then i'll be very surprised. Grim indeed.

Dont know why we dont just do a China and Russia and build more hospitals for Covid.

What do you think the restrictions will be, Nick?

I'm stocked up but the local Proxi is still well provided and noticeably busier than usual, which is a perverse kind of good news for Christine because the business often struggles at this time of year.

I got a rubbish night's sleep last night so after walking to my first client in the village, I decided to cycle the 4km to my next as the rain had stopped. I feel so much better and I think I'll do the same tomorrow even if I have to be there for 08h15 - the weather forecast is superb for the next few days, 20c+ progged - so between running and cycling I reckon I'll get the sleep I need.

I didn't bother stocking up, but I noted the houses around me that did. Should the SHTF, I'll be raiding them at first dawn.

I guess there's a sense of 'if the government won't protect us, we'll take matters into our own hands'

His 'many loved ones will die' speech yesterday appears to have turned the screw for a lot of people.

I thought his speech was perfectly fine, as was the ones from the medical experts. He was pretty upfront, no sugar coating, and basically said, the Government is doing what it believes is right, and now its on us, the people to do the same and not have people stand there like zombies waiting for instruction.

I think thats the fear, and partly why the government here are somewhat prepared to let the working population cop it so to speak and to resist too harshly the virus. Other places that went into lockdown are very much at risk of a 2nd wave and they will be very susceptible , whilst in theory we will have a lower risk. No guarantee of course, but history suggests its quite likely.

    Yes, herd immunity.

I'm very confident in our countries decision not to follow 95% of the world decision to shut everything down. I trust and believe in our medical personnel to do the right thing. This is uncharted waters, so only time will tell, but its god damn scary.

All soccer matches in French Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 will be played with a maximum 1,000 spectators until 15 April due to the coronavirus, the journalist Yohan Roblin from the French news channel LCI has reported.

They should probably do the same in the UK, albeit it won't affect Manchester City

Gosh, read the translation and it is very grim.  And sadly, what he said will probably happen here.

Very grim and very sad, especially for the Doctors and Nurses when he puts it all into perspective like that. He also expresses how peeved they get when people comment "It's just the flu" or "it's just like the flu" and then you have this line and you can hear his anger:

    Quote

there is the diagnosis, which is always the same: bilateral interstitial pneumonia. Now, tell me which flu virus causes such a rapid tragedy.

Following on from my post earlier, expect most hospitals to have terrapin temporary buildings in place in next few days, to create isolation units, away from main hospital buildings.

NHS, government, health authorities are ready for massive, major increase in next few days.

I believe you. Unfortunately I know the same information. My business deals with the NHS, specifically infection control and orders for my product are going through the roof, I've spoken to several Directors of IC and it's about to blow up.

Early on in this thread somebody posted this which I saved.

We are wayyyy ahead of schedule. Alarming really.

By the 8th March it predicted 40,663 cumulative infections and 1,220 deaths from the disease. We are on over 100k and nearly 4k deaths 2 days sooner.

We are well on course to hit 7.7 billion cases by 20th September and if the WHO mortality rate of 3 percent holds true, 231 million deaths.

Something fishy about one of those columns headings.

All this time I thought it was a respiratory disease.

Maybe, but SK's testing numbers are high, so should give some positivity to allay fears of 3,4% CFR everywhere it hits.

True, the global rate is around 3.6% I believe, inflated by certain events, and certain countries which are not up to standard. I.E - I seen a video of grown men licking a pole as part of some form of religious act in Iran which isn't going to help matters.

In 6-12 months we should have a good idea though.

South Korea has tested more than 140,000 people for the new coronavirus and confirmed more than 6,000 cases. Its fatality rate is around 0.6%.

SK's extensive testing probably shows a much truer fatality rate, rather than countries where testing is less so. By this assumption the 3, 4% mortality rates are probably way too high.

So, months down the line from now, should we expect a 'true' fatality rate of 0.6% OR if a country can contain more effectively, then maybe fatality rate will be even lower than 0.6%?

It really is pointless to be calculating any CFR until at least another 6 months to a year to gather sufficient data or until it's all under control.

A NSW man has been tasered by police after getting into an argument over toilet paper at a Big W store.

Not sure what the panic is Down Under...

I don't get the whole toilet roll thing. It's happening in the States too, panic buying of toilet roll.

I'm pretty certain if it ever got the point where I needed to bug out, I'd be buying canned food, because I can't eat toilet roll.

Gene sequencing by Beijing Ditan Hospital found coronavirus in the cerebrospinal fluid of a 56-year-old confirmed #COVID19 patient with encephalitis, which provides evidence that COVID19 can invade patients’ nervous systems, just like SARS and MERS.

Appears that this virus can cause you to collapse after all.

Why close schools if, statistically, kids arent contracting it?

Kids are contracting it, but none of them have died and have presented mild symptoms. The problem is, if a child gets it and has mild symptoms, one would assume it's the common cold, they then become serious spreaders, especially where they put their hands and spit/lick random things.

You need to get checked out then.

It does say on the news update that they will be contacting all who they believe might have come into contact with the infected. I heard it was a patient in the ICU, which would be the main building - I was in a different building, but still worrying.
