Well, despite the fact I witnessed a few (and only a few!) distant flashes and rumbles courtesy of the Kent clipping cells, I was left feeling distinctly unsatisfied this evening;
With the broad southerly flow, deep trough out west, Cold front advancing eastwards, and 850hPa temps touching 17c... I genuinely would've expected something better and certainly more widespread for southern and SE areas.
Of course, I'm happy for Northern areas who have done really quite well today, and I don't want to bring down the mood with a lengthy moan. Just quite comical how paltry the offering has been today for the aforementioned areas. Always next time, I suppose!
Chelmsford in Essex had nothing again today

I’d say there’s a brief window between 00:00-06:00hrs of snow showers moving more along the Norfolk/Suffolk/Essex coast then the Thames as winds swing more NE then E/ESE after midnight.
They can visit Chelmsford too

Lucked out today. Best of the spell by a mile in terms of notable snowfall. Alternating fat flakes, heavy graupel, then lighter on repeat. Perhaps a few cms from this morning. I think the bin lid has topped out about 10cms or so, but far less on the deck.
Expected about 7-10cms before the spell started - if only it could've stuck around, we'd probably have got there!!
Still, more than I had any right to expect given the complications we've had getting decent snow in this spell.
About the same in Galleywood too

There be convection because of the cold air over 'warm' seas situation but as the PPN charts show, it will be more shallow convection because the instability won't be as low as it would be if thicknesses and pressure was lower.
Just think of the last easterly we had, lots of showers but very small in nature and cloud tops quite flat so almost stratus cumulus type rather Cumonimbus type.
With some nice Streamers hopefully

I hope that areas that didn't see a covering (East Kent, South Essex), or just a patchy covering (here) earlier, might do better out of Round II. A few years ago on a certain other weather website I won't name, someone opined that it's rare in lowland Britain to see settling/accumulating snow in the heart of the day, defined as 11am - 3pm - it's hard to argue with this. Apart from the warm sector out to the East some of us were unlucky with the timing of the precipitation, perhaps darkness will be our friend tonight.
I hope so!

Feel like it’s worth having an escape from the models. The fact that Christmas is around the corner makes it a great reason.
Problem with chasing for cold is it drops you onto the diving board ready to catapult you into the swimming pool of addiction. It’s hard to swim away from the addiction! That longing for the cold and snow numerous wintry fans crave for! We chase. And chase. And chase. All that’s needed is for that darn lid of no snow to be lifted off.
Even if not, just got to have faith that something white will turn up. At some point.
Psst, GFS, the greedy red line would like to see a strong block to the North and some Easterlies and Northlies of steel, (whenever the models are next viewed). And the same for you ECMWF, UKMO, GEM and ICON.
May you all have a magical time tomorrow. I know for some it may not be so merry, so probably best to make the most of what you can tomorrow, if so.
You better behave yourselves on here tonight, or you may just get that lump of coal. Santa can tell when you’ve been naughty! This is his favourite thread. So you better watch it!
