I take back what I said about being good for some parts of the region this morning. The showers aren't even making it a few miles inland now 😂

It's been snowing in roughly the same spot for 45 minutes and to make it worse its literally right next to my house but not quite far enough!

Could contain: Plot, Chart, Person, Map, Electronics

Woke up to a canny covering here in whitley bay so its snow right on the coast

I follow Neil Bradshaw's site at South Shields in these situations and while the surface wind has switched from a westerly to a north-westerly it is still blowing from the land, so it seems unlikely to be the warming effects of the sea at the coast.  There is a pool of warmer air (just creeping above -5C at the 850hPa level) moving over the region, so it's more likely to be a lack of elevation issue near the coast.

Thanks did not realise we were dropping below -5 850's ., I thought we were in the -7 to -8 region

It will surprise no one to know that I too have been having these worries/asking these questions.

Yep and tbh i noticed it a bit with the 2018 BFTE. The showers / streamers seemed to go north or south of the Tyne, I’m sure its to do with the mouth of the river / valley maybe funnelling out winds to force showers either side. No proof just a hunch but may do some research
