Look like they are fizzling out at the minute but going as the forecast
-
Don’t think the showers are supposed to get really going until tomorrow morning so these showing up now are a bonus
-
Hoping for some showers to pep up later, Just had a look at Neil Bradshaw South Shields Weather and temp is -2.9 with DP at -3.3 so would not be marginal even at the coast

It's no more than a dusting on Whitley Lodge so must be very localised
Monkseaton , decent cover think its just how showers come in , you might have been on edge of it ?

I follow Neil Bradshaw's site at South Shields in these situations and while the surface wind has switched from a westerly to a north-westerly it is still blowing from the land, so it seems unlikely to be the warming effects of the sea at the coast. There is a pool of warmer air (just creeping above -5C at the 850hPa level) moving over the region, so it's more likely to be a lack of elevation issue near the coast.
Thanks did not realise we were dropping below -5 850's ., I thought we were in the -7 to -8 region

I think as the more heavier stuff moves in it will be snow.
Hoping for a decent hour or so of it.
Nope still rain here, another poor start to a potential cold spell tbh

a few snow flakes falling here now
Rain here in Whitley bay when we had snow earlier , temps must have lifted with wind off warm sea ?

1.6 degrees now - car covered in snow! - now 0.9 degrees - 7 degree drop and covering of snow in 40 mins
Temp dropped even right here at coast and trying to sleet , wonder if it will turn completely ?

It will surprise no one to know that I too have been having these worries/asking these questions.
Yep and tbh i noticed it a bit with the 2018 BFTE. The showers / streamers seemed to go north or south of the Tyne, I’m sure its to do with the mouth of the river / valley maybe funnelling out winds to force showers either side. No proof just a hunch but may do some research
-
Wow we’ve had a canny fall in Whitley bay to top up what we had, looks like more incoming, brilliant stuff this
-
Radar showing a mix of sleet (green) and snow on that system , that must be wrong ?

I’m thinking that big clump is going between Whitley bay and blyth like most this afternoon
-
I’m surprised that showers are popping up again as it looked dead about 5pm ish

I've still got hope for what's just offshore. It does all seem to be splitting north and south at the last minute though.
I’m convinced it to do with the river Tyne/ valley , maybe a vacuum exiting which forces showers either side, who knows
-
Yeah snowing heavy in Whitley bay again for last 20 mins , best it’s been , showers seem to last longer
-
Amazing tonight and been under this band for last 20 mins or so , snow non stop
