This is Winter!!

Fantastic memories of 87! It had been snowing most of sunday night (being close to the Thames estuary,it kept things going!) and by monday morning everywhere was a winter wonderland.Massive drifts and about 18 inches of level snow. I went out exploring with a friend, we could leap into huge drifts head first We walked to Hadleigh Castle, its very exposed overlooking the estuary,took some brilliant photo's. It was late morning by now and the sky started to darken,the snow was coming off the thames,we had a complete "whiteout",couldn't see my own hand :lol: Had a great few days that week,the most extreme snowy event i've witnessed so far

Hi John, Lets hope that arctic cold starts to cool and influence our part of the world soon,just for the moment thats all it needs to do!

Fuzzy memories of december 1981.My dad died in late nov,it started to snow at his funeral.I can remember huge icicles hanging from my mums house(about 3ft long) and the snow hung around for ages. I think it started to melt on xmas night. Anyone got some good stories?

I was just leaving school for the day in jan 79,and it started to snow Iwas 14, the buses had stopped, so i set off for a 3 mile trudge heading through a severe easterly blizzard :o By the time i got home i looked like a snowman School was called off for a few days after that Happy Days

Thanks for that T.M. He also mentions, that he witnessed in the sunshine the air was full of icy "spiculae" floating in all directions,when the temps were very low? There are also his accounts of the summer of 1783,when Iceland had major eruptions. Alarming meteors,tremendous thunder-storms,intense heat and blood red sunsets!

Has anybody else read the journals of Gilbert White,the 18th century naturalist. There are some great accounts of severe winter weather! He writes about the extraordinary frosts of 1784,when they had a vast snow on the 7th december.By the 9th the lanes were impassable! He mentions the thermometer fell to 4degrees by 11 o`clock on the 9th and 1/2 a degree below zero on the 10th of december! (whats that in centigrade?)It started to thaw on the 3rd of jan 1785. Another notable set of entries was from 1788.The frost started on november the 23rd and continude with lots of heavy snow till jan the 15th 1789, when the snow melts!! If only we could see weather like that again it might just cure me of my obcession with snow (never!) Anyway, theres lots of weather accounts in the book with dates,almost makes you wish you were back in those days!

Well i guess it all comes down to luck really,if i see the lights it will be a bonus the snows the main reason we're going! hopefully it will start cooling down up there soon

I'm thinking of taking the family for a short trip to Lapland around xmas. It's really for the kids :lol: but i would like to see the northern lights :lol: I've heard that because of the sunspot minimum cycle this year it might be a poor show. Has anyone got some thoughts on this? and has anybody been on one of these trips. as long as there is plenty of snow i think i could be happy :lol:
