  1. I recall after maternity leave I started work Nightshift on 27/2/79. It snowed so heavy in Newcastle all roads were blocked !
  2. 27th Feb 1979 I went to work as a Gosforth Ncle Police Officer. The snow fell so hard and through the night quickly rose to the heights of motor car roofs. Nothing could move on the roads. Public calls to police were building up in need of prioritising under these horrendous road conditions. All roads were blocked and cars and beat police officers were forced to stand down from attending any incidents. No vehicles could manouvre. Most staff could not journey home, having to be temporarily accommodated in the police Station. For those that did walk the perilous journey home, Policing was carried out locally the following day from their own private residential homes on foot, and only if possible. Having a small child at home I was determined to walk from work 6am 28/2 the two miles home. I recall the heavy thick snow, which had drifted to car height and hedge height and unknown to me I was actually walking on top of the cars buried in the deep snow. It was a horrendous shift that night.
