Only just seen this thread, I remember thunder snow from the cold winter of 1981/82, there was tons of snow that Winter and I remember that year quite well as I left school in 1982!
Have seen lightning, heard thunder during snow a few times since but never recorded an incident yet unfortunately. -

Even better, here's a link
Thanks appreciate that, I'll have a read.

I think Nikon have released a camera that is constantly buffering in the background which is almost perfectly suited to photographing lightning, when a bolt appears in the frame you just have to press the shutter to save the image
I honestly don't know how I feel about it as it seems like cheating, but then again we are delt a crappy hand in this country with the amount of storms we get, so it probably evens it up a little
Oh really? Yeh I wouldn't be a fan either.
Ha well yes we have to get storms in the first place, The patterns have definitely shifted to a more Northern area plus the Channel storm killer on the doorstep for me.
Unfortunately having done it so long and chased in the US I'm probably a bit lazy here so miss some as well.
Thanks for the info re: That Nikon, I'm going to look it up anyway.- 1

My best guess is a decent mid range DSLR camera, then long exposure, ideally shutter speed of 20-30 second or above, wide aperture, manual focus to infinity, then processed a bit in photoshop, lightroom or similar. Hopefully one day myself I could get to the skills of Sam or others with the DSLR cams.
I know @Southern Storm and @ChannelThunder have gotten some amazing shots this year locally and abroad with likely DSLR's!
The situation changes quickly with the location and strength of strikes as well.
You can use a lightning trigger that saves the shutter, but you can also do shutter speeds down to 8 seconds etc or longer.
I started taking lightning shots nearly 40 years ago using film in Gravesend so imagine what it was like waiting for the film to come back processed...24-48hrs then flicking through loads of empty shots then...voila!!
All my gear now is pro DSLR! All Nikon and prime lenses.

Lightning striking the Shard at 1A.M this morning.
I deliberately missed the storms on the coast yesterday evening as the weather models showed them coming inland, So I thought I’d push the boundaries & try a shot I’ve wanted for a few years, Not easy when there’s barely any storms so this was a massive risk.
The rain was torrential & it was misty so for ages I couldn’t even see the buildings or lights, But looking at the radar I knew the precip would die down, Slowly it cleared but there was no more lightning, There hadn’t been a single strike anyway it was all C2C, I was about to give up then this one strike happened & that was it, Job done
I could've done with a more powerful strike but I'm sure the occupants of the Shard would disagree!

Yeah it was hard to tell from my positon. There was rising motion but couldn't tell whether it was rising and rotating.
Anyway, a moody black and white shot which I really want with a big plume wall cloud in the summer or something similar so will likely head out to the new field with this house in that I've found. It/s a perfect old looking house for these kind of pictures.
You're right it is tough to tell sometimes especially here as the storms aren't usually as severe as in the US and rising air with movement gets the excitement going!
Scud is commonly mistaken for funnels, I've done it in the past.
It's early days yet so hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

I'm sorry but I'm going to jaffa cakes on your chips and say that's scud (Fractus cloud)
Mainly because of it's ragged appearance and a funnel would be tighter in appearance because of rotation, Theres a difference between rotation and movement as scud would have movement because of the rising air around it.- 1

Great spot and capture, I've only just seen your post.
Just for future reference that's a UTA (upper tangent arc) at the top of the 22 degree halo, A parhelion (Sun dog) would be to the side.
Had a nice UTA at sunset down here in Kent a few weeks ago.
All the best.- 5

I might have missed some I only had a quick look the other day and posted a photo from 2004, then yesterday a memory came up on my FB from 2013 and that's when I saw the 9 year gap!- 1

Pleasant surprise with tonight's potential, don't think i've ever posted about convective activity or thunderstorms this late in the year before less than 2 weeks until Halloween, wow. Crazy weather this year.
Had some decent late storms over the years, this was taken 28th October 2004 Gravesend, Kent.

Covid chasing from my bedroom pt2
As a storm chaser this is the worst week to be ill but I've still seen amazing stuff, and to get an Arcus two nights in a row, crazy, that's not happened before in over 35 years of doing this apart from in the U.S
This is a decent Arcus from last night with some squiggly lightning!
Gravesend, Kent- 26

James175 1:30AM mate, The first cell was dying as it headed West from around Margate, but it recycled and picked up, There wasn't a single rumble of thunder though, the second lot hit after 3A.M and I slept through that!
