It’s amazing when you hear on the weather forecast that nationally, ‘a high today of 23c’ sounds so normal now…it’s mid September but average temps are so mild. A few years ago 23c would get us excited about it being a height of summer day! Now it’s ‘oh, 23 again…’

Yesterday I recorded a high of 23c and a low overnight of 14c. I’m dubious about that high & seriously doubted the low as I experienced it as quite cool last night (closing the windows) & 14 doesn’t sound that low…however comparing to Staxton station again (high of 22.8c & low of  14.5c) it is comparable 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Locally today we have mostly broken cloud cover, with temp reading at 18c at midday. Nothing to complaint about again 😊.

I don't think 23is anything special at this time of year, officially it is still late summer

A lovely day all round on the wolds. Didn’t check the temperature gauge during the day, sorry, but yes it was hot. Still 20.5c this evening sitting out in the garden. You would normally call this the height of summer but despite the warmth (I know we’re back down to average temps in coming days) there are other signs sadly showing the change in season. Most of the swifts have gone in the last couple of days, only a small handful left ☹️ & they look to be practicing their flight skills before setting off soon. The Big Butterfly Count is on but what should I count? Hardly any butterflies this season. Just from observations in my garden, there have been significantly low numbers of insects this year - bees are really low, I haven’t seen a single ladybird, even the dreaded harvest bugs were only here a few days and then gone. Finches had disease this year and I lost all of my greenfinch population😢. All in all a poor year for wildlife in my garden (& believe me my garden is very wild!). The ants are around & flies, but nothing in any great abundance like previous years. Do you think it’s just been the heat/dryness??

Plenty of wasps and flies here and a few butterflies but less than usual, but a few different kinds of ladybirds

Thursday is looking like the day when many of us could record some of our highest ever December temps. Rare to get anything above 14C in these parts in December, but looks highly likely on Wednesday and Thursday.

I think it was 15 degrees on Christmas Day in 2016,was sat in the pub beer garden
