This is an event that will go down in history here. I have no idea why we don’t have a red warning. Thankfully, my street isn’t prone to flooding (likely due to a slightly higher elevation than surrounding areas), but it’s horrifying and strange to see areas I frequently visit completely underwater.

Interestingly, my area seems to sit in an in-between zone in these splits. It’ll be far from a washout but not as dry as places south and east of us, either.

Did anywhere manage a frost last night? For my location, it’ll be a while. Even grass frosts don’t tend to happen until November now. -
I agree with a lot of this. As long as you’re dressed appropriately, most days in this country are useable to some degree (outside of perhaps the most extreme conditions). This doesn’t apply to sitting in beer gardens or going for picnics, of course, but walking in heavy rain can be quite soothing.

Are there any signs of hope for more central areas? I see the odd strike on lightning radars to my south but there’s nothing on the rainfall radar. -
It’s touch and go whether we’ll hit 30°C here. I’m not going to let a difference of 1°C or so impact my enjoyment of an impressive heatwave for this time of year, though. If we get a thunderstorm later on, even better. I normally prefer cleaner air and clearer skies, but this humidity is definitely a unique experience.

It looks quite convective in nature, so maybe it’ll develop into something. I’m just an amateur though with very little knowledge. You’re right about us having plenty of time, too. I guess being such a central location means convective cloud is more likely to develop here. As I’ve typed this reply the sun has emerged, so there should be nothing to worry about.

It’s reached 25°C already here. I’m hoping that one day in this spell will see us reach 30°C.

It’s a stunning early autumn day here. There’s something about the sunlight at this time of year that’s aesthetically pleasing to me.

I’ve been comparing the averages with the data for the month from the Met Office. In my area, it was a mixed bag. With regards to temperatures, June was much above average, July a little below and August very close. Precipitation was average to possibly slightly above for the summer as a whole, mostly because of July. We were a little below average for sunshine, again mostly due to July. I wish we’d had more sunshine and that we’d had more hot spells but it was far from a disaster as a season.

Summer 2023 was largely middling for me. A lovely June, a poor July and an August somewhere between those extremes.

I think it could very well reach at least the high 20s in these parts. I find temperature forecasts at this timeframe to be quite conservative.

Some trees have been turning here since late July. I’m not very good at identifying species but it’s definitely more than one kind of tree. It only tends to be a few leaves at the end of a branch but it’s still earlier than it should be. Hopefully the increased sunlight over the last week or so has slowed the change down.

Here, August has actually been decent for the most part. It’s definitely softened the blow of a poor July.

In fairness, if more of July had been like the last few days I’d have few complaints. Sunny spells, winds ranging from light to breezy and the odd shower. Temperatures haven’t been exceptional (topping out at around 22°C) but it’s felt warm in the sun, aided by the more humid air we’ve had.

I think I was having a little strop. The CET is obviously an important tool. I just want some sunshine.

That’s super interesting to me! To someone with a lot of passion but limited knowledge like myself, I’d never really considered using the 1961-1990 averages as a baseline. Would it be fair to say that they’re a reflection of what our climate should be, in comparison to later periods?

Thank you! I use my mobile browser most of the time so I miss details on websites sometimes. One thing I can definitely say has been poor is the above average rainfall. You can’t use your pesky data to take that from me.

I think the issue with the CET is that it doesn’t give a mean maximum temperature. I’m not in the CET zone, but our mean maximum this month will likely be around 18°C or 19°C. That’s below average. Night time temperatures are probably around average or slightly above, so it doesn’t necessarily reflect in the mean. However, I think our average mean temperature for July here is around 17°C, so we’ll end up below that too.

I welcome variety. If these conditions had lasted ten days, I wouldn’t have minded. It’s being stuck in the same pattern that gets to me.

I’m not so sure about that. July 2023 has felt closer to an unsettled September here. Regular 18°C highs are much below average for my location.
