  1. Hello all, I hope everyone is doing well. I posted this on another forum a good few months back, but I’m curious to know what your thoughts are. The day was August 31 2005. The day had one of the most severe thunderstorms i have ever experienced in my location. We had at least 2 rounds of severe thunderstorms. It was a primarily afternoon event. The storms had some of the loudest, most unusual sounding thunder I have ever heard, either mostly positive lightning strikes or simply very close lightning, and torrential rainfall. The convective setup according to estofex consisted of a thundery low from bay of biscay which moved to southeast ireland, still in it’s deepening stages, and its associated slow moving surface cold front. If I recall, the atmosphere was capped to thunderstorm development over england, it was mainly Ireland that got in on the action. Trying to figure out if this was a classic, or modified Spanish plume event? The forecast also mentioned strong wind sheer and a strong jet streak, so it appears that this was a highly sheered setup. I have read many convective outlooks over the years, but I have rarely come across a situation where a low from the bay of biscay in summer moves all the way to southeast Ireland. I am visually impaired so unfortunately am unable to read weather charts or radar images but if someone can find weather charts or radar images for that day it would be good to describe them in the comments.
  2. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/46283835_Categorisation_of_synoptic_environments_associated_with_Mesoscale_Convective_Systems_over_the_UKHello all, I hope everyone is doing well. I’ve posted on this forum a few times, I am the visually impaired person interested in meteorology. Was just wondering if anyone knows if there is full access available to this article?
  3. I have lived here in western Ireland all my life and the thunderstorms that moved through here yesterday were among some of the most severe I’ve experienced in many years, excluding the thunderstorms we had last August and October, and even more severe than the thunderstorms we had last Tuesday and Wednesday. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think yesterday’s setup was a Spanish Plume . Instead, an atlantic low to the west of Ireland which brought a very warm humid and unstable airmass over western Ireland, multiple shortwave troughs that moved through at various times during the day and a strong jet streak over the celtic sea, and unusually high CAPE values over 1500 j/kg, at least for Irish standards. We must have had at least 7 hours of thunderstorms yesterday, and before that some elevated thunderstorms on Friday night which followed on from last Tuesday and Wednesdays storms. Has anyone ever seen a convective setup like the one which lead to yesterday’s severe thunderstorms before?
  4. Hello all So I was wondering what is the difference between a regular spanish plume setup and a modified spanish plume? Is the forcing stronger with a modified spanish plume? From what I have been able to gather, some of the most violent thunderstorms in the UK and Ireland take place under modified spanish plume setups. I believe June 28 2012 was such a setup. I’ve thought that August 31 2005 was another example, although not sure about the latter I can’t find much information on August 31 2005, other than the fact that the August 31 2005 event resulted in some of the most violent thunderstorms I have ever experienced in Ireland. there hasn’t been anything similar on that scale in years, with a few exceptions.
  5. Interesting! I’m guessing these storms were mostly elevated? Did they move north from France?
  6. Hello all, I am the visually impaired poster that has posted a few times on here. I was curious what was the synoptic and mesoscale environment behind the severe thunderstorms in southeast England in the early morning hours of July 28 2014? I am aware that the storms from the 17th through the 19th of July were caused by a Spanish plume setup, however, unsure about 28th July setup as I can’t find any convective outlooks for that day. Brighton was particularly badly hit, with frequent lightning, flooding rain and small hail.
  7. Just curious, was it similar to the mcs of June 24 1994, or was it a squall line or bow echo system?
  8. Hi, thanks for the link. So I was able to open it, but whenever I opened the link the screen reader says image, image most of the way through the article. I wonder if it’s because it is a scanned document?
  9. Hello all, hope everyone is doing well. I recently discovered a video of severe thunderstorms in Southern England on May 29 1999. It was a very impressive video, lots of loud thunder. Does anyone know the cause of this event. I found an academic article on this event but was unfortunately unable to read it because the document wasn’t accessible with my screen reader software.
  10. What I remember most about the event was the sweltering heat and humidity , the torrential rain and deafening thunder and the windows ratteling and my grandmothers house vibrating which I had never before experienced in Ireland! Apparently forecasters the day before had underestimated the severity of the storms . Unfortunately I can’t find any other convective outlooks on this event nor any footage of the storms nor any archives of met eireann forecasts. Either way, going by the convective forecast it definitely seems like it was a plume-like setup, all be it much further north, I am aware that many spanish plume setups tend to favor southeast England.
  11. Hello all. So I am a weather nurd who is blind and was curious if anyone on here remembers the severe thunderstorms in the Uk and Ireland on August 31st 2005? I live in Ireland and, they were easily some of the most violent thunderstorms that I remember , even compared to the thunderstorms we had in 2020 and last year. It seems to be an event that has been largely forgotten, but if I recall, August 31 2005 was one of the hottest days of that summer. A low pressure system moved north from the bay of biscay to southeast Ireland. A surface cold front pushed across Ireland and W scotland, with a strong jet streak and strong qg forcing ahead of it which lead to severe thunderstorms ahead of it especially over Ireland. I have read many convective outlooks over the years but have rarely read one like the one issued on August 31 2005. In the years since, I also don’t recall an event like this one so late into August. Perhaps this was a modified Spanish Plume event, or an extention of a Spanish Plume that moved into Ireland? It seems that England didn’t get many thunderstorms on that day, but Ireland got hammered though, especially southwest and Eastern Ireland Many severe thunderstorms in Ireland are extentions of Spanish Plume setups. Here is the convective forecast issued by estofex on that day. New Forecast
