  1. Hi I thought instead of giving a frost report everytime, I'd give the number of frost days we've had this winter halfway through, and I'll give the rest at the end.

so far we have registered 29 frosts since September but i did not write the dates down, although I have got some information in a weather journal so I'll dig that out and give details later

    Hi Stephen,

My records since the frost season started is now 44 days recorded somewhere in NW England from the sink holes of Cumbrian Fells to the sandy Cheshire plains. -1C in my garden now at 18z so 45 by tomorrow morning. Not bad going with more on the horizon.

  2. -3.3º here last night, bringing the total air frosts this winter so far to.....drum roll......33.

    Hi OON,

Yes, minus 3.3 C here last night. Certainly a lot more frosts recorded this winter in NW England. The lake at the back of my house seems to have been semi- frozen for weeks.

    Cheers

  3. Warmed up nicely overnight.

    Latest conditions:

    Air Temperature: 2.4 degrees Celsius

    Ground Temperature: 8 degrees Celsius

    Barometric Pressure: 1007 milliBars

    Wind Speed: 3.4 knots

Wind Direction: 173 degrees East from North

    Dry but overcast.

    Good Morning,

Minus 4.9C min last night. 6cm cover of snow. Third night this month with min of -5C. Will struggle to get much above freezing point here today.

  4. Last night cold air from NE reached our country. After fogy nights in last week (temperature was around +3°C), this night was clear. Tmin was +0,8°C and on 5cm -2°C. It was first frost here.

Today will be (I hope) another cold night with Tmin around -3 to +2°C.

    Hi Iztock,

No sign of frost here. Remarkable warm spell with air up from France for much of this month. Short lived cold spell expected for weekend.

    Thanks for the report.

  5. Thank you!

I don´t know if will be -40 this year , but you never know  My friend is in march already measured -41,1 in one sinkhole in Julian Alps.

Karst basin (Vala) is near Croatia border, few km south from mountain Snežnik. The other one, Smrekova draga is north from Snežnik.

The nearby location is Ilirska bistrica (it is on map).

ps: NE from Snežnik is a valley that we call Slovene Siberia (official record is around -36; on weather station).

I will get my map out !

    Thanks again.

  6. Good Morning Iztok,

Great web-site of yours. Hope you record  -40C in your special sink hole this coming season. Will be watching for your reports with great interest.

    Cheers

    Iztock,

Can you please tell me the height of the mountains that surround your special karst ( sink hole ) in the location where you expect to record -40C this winter ?

Just fascinated with your hobby and location.

    Thanks

  7. Around 2600 m, I thing :D

Here is one graph of temperature last few days in sinkhole Medunjska grapa near Grosuplje. Tmin was -2,2 on 1.10. On 2.10. was -0,8 at 2.30am, than became more cloudy    You can see more on my website.

  8. I get some new information about temperatures in sinkholes today. My friend has measured even -6,4°C (at 5cm). The other colleague reporting about temperature -5,1°C in 25.9.

This year we have a lot of extreme cases in weather :D

It will be another chilly night. It is +10,8 and clearly sky. Air pressure is falling.

    Hi Iztock,

I want to live in a sink hole !

  9. I hope that this isn´t  offtopic

This morning was very cold B)   On my station (355m) was only +3,5°C, but in some other places was first frost - especialy in some cold air pools (sinkholes).

Tmin was -2,8°C in Rateče (Gorenjska region).

Now the sone is shining and temperature is +8,8°C

    ;)

Greetings Iztock and welcome to the site.

Keep the reports coming in from your wonderful part of Europe. I note your interests include" karst sink holes " extreme weather and photo. Let us know when your record your first snowfalls and at what elevation?

I have a home across the border in Carinthia on Katschberg ski- mountain >

  10. Lots of flashes and distant rumbles towards the east (I'm located in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire). Rain is on and off, seems to be picking up again. Strike Alert says 12 - 24 miles.

    Pharmcat,

Can see the same lightning display as you. I would say due south from me, towards Crewe. That would tie in with your ob.

    Cheers

  11. steady heavy rain - sometimes torrential, warm and humid.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Hi Stephen,

That pulse of heavy rain now affecting my part of Cheshire. Back edge seems to be slow to clear. Looks bleak for the cricket matches throughout the county and Old Trafford this afternoon.

  12. John Hammond is a good presenter, but why does he always use that annoying phrase 'going nowhere fast'?

Tonight on the 6.27pm forecast, a band of rain coming in from the Atlantic was said to be 'going nowhere fast'.

What on earth does that mean?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yes,John is one of the best of a current bunch of naff presenters, but his taste in music is also naff : when he publically prefers Status Quo to the great legents Pink Floyd on tonights forecast. Johnboy get a life !

  13. Woke to watch this mornings trash BBC weather ART ATTACK presentation by weather girl Louise ! This is what she had to say about tomorrows weather as she followed the sludge green graphics around Blighty---

"Plenty of rain moving across the North and Northwest and other Northern areas as well, but the Southeast will be OK,good news for the golf"!

CONFUSED-- damn right I am. Where is North by Northwest ? Who cares if the Southeast is OK ? The water companys dont! and finally the golf is being played in County Kildare, hardly the Southeast.

Have now given up with breakfast morning trash presentation. The BBC dont care and the Met Office are scared to upset their paymasters. Glad I got that off my mind, will retire to the conservatory and munch my frosties and watch the gloom outside, at least watching Pink Floyd on the BBCs excellent presentation of the Live G8 concert cheered me up !

When does the pub open !
