    Happy New Year all, my evening well kaiboshed by the snow in Leeds. Amazing altitude effect though. Came out of restaurant at 150ft a.s.l at 9:30 and snowing big dollopy flakes, hardly settling though. Drove off up hill and by 300 ft road was covered, and by 600ft fairly hairy driving. Closer to my home same story, sleety in the valley but heavy snow at 270m, only just stopped, with about 2" level. Too wet to drift significantly.

    Wintry showers on and off here all evening, though having driven lower down altituse is a factor. Looking across the valley I'm just above the level at which the precipitation has a fair amount of snow in it. Not out and out snow, but very sleety. Temp around 2C.

    It's clearly a very marginal situation. Rain here since the snow stopped around 1730h, with traces of melting snow (looking through the skylights I reckon <5% impacting drops were snow, and that well melted). Another heavy shower at 2130 though, with around 40% snow. Expect to wake in the morning and see the Three Peaks and Northern Dales snow capped.

    Big band of showers just hit my parish. I started off about 8 miles away with the car thermometer reading 6C, by the time I hit the shower (rain) it was 4C and at my house it was sleet and 2C. Now snowing. Mainly light and patchy, largeish wet flakes.
