  1. Can anyone give me any reason as to why this weather turned out to have no thunder and lightning, at least none down here and very few seem to have reported anything more than an odd flash of lightning or one rumble of thunder? The rain was the torrential type associated with convective weather so why no thunder? Or even hail would have been nice. So far there has only been one very small thunderstorm down here this summer. Surely this summer is a bit unusual so what is happening? Or should I ask this in the learners area?
  2. Sorry camiscool, wasn't ignoring you but went to bed and just got back on here now. As far as I know I am still at Bognor as my profile shows. Does it not show up on your computer or did you just not think to check it? Well we recorded a fairly hefty amoount of rain overnight, 50mm (or for anyone non-metric like me 2 inches) but I should think a fairly high proportion of that came down in the 50 minutes of absolutely torrential rain we had either side of midnight. After that it went to just steady rain unless moreheavy weather came when I was asleep. Was woken at 1:30 when the neighbours daughter arrived home with her damaged car on the back of a transporter, seems she ran into the back of another car during the atrocious weather. That's youngsters for you.
  3. 50 minutes now of seriously torrential rain and just slackening to very heavy rain now with plenty more to come over yet. I am thankful really that I don't live beneath a hill. Downs are around 6 miles north of me. Wind is starting to rise now and has gone from F2 around an hour ago up to F6 currently. Looking like it will reach gale force after all. My apologies for doubting the METO Edit. 12:40 now up to F7 and very gust indeed.
  4. I was just going to say you have some Very heavy rain ideed heading your way unless it peters out before it reaches you but as it is extremely intense he I would be a lot of money that wont happen. But don't hold me to it.
  5. It's been torrential here for 20 minutes non-stop, not even slowing down slightly. looks like we have got one of the intense spots. i wont be sleeping just yet after all. It will be interesting tomorrow to see what our total rainfall is. I am really thinking the METO have it wrong for the winds though. Currently only F3 still here. Not even gusty conditions at all. We are obviously at present in the white blob showing just NW of the IOW on the METO rainfall radar so I can't think it can last much longer at this intensity. But here's hoping. http://www.metoffice...adar/index.html Erm.. Just got worse, not just stair rods but almost a fountain coming down. Starting to gust a bit too and wind rising. Looking at this radar it seems to be actually increasing as it comes across the Channel. http://www.raintoday.co.uk/
  6. Torrential rain now in Bognor. Impressive local forecast by netweather. they gave torrential rain to start at midnight. 20 minutes early can't be bad.
  7. No dont think so. only 6 posts on there today, and not one mentioning tonight and tomorrow risk, if there is any. Personally I wont be staying up waiting for the end of the world but would expect to be woken by heavy rain and strong wind. moderation in all things eh? Night all.
  8. Thanks for clarifying that ajpoolshark. I didn't realise this was supposed to be a convective discussion as any chance of that is surely miniscule and the heading is Storm General Discussion Thread. Is there another thread for discussing non-convective storms then? I would love to see some convection with this but failing that it is the first even slightly interesting weather here since April. probably why there are so many of what you class as pointless posts.by people starved of any real weather interests. Blizzards said:- I agree, while i appreciate some areas will see a fair bit of rain with some flooding possible and some strong winds, i think many have gone way over board expecting thunder lightning, severe gales, the lot. Some realism and reality is needed in here. But the Met O have forecast gale F 9 for many coastal areas, surely it is not unreasonable to expect that that is likely to happen? MET O gale warning. Wight Gale warnings - Issued: 0337 UTC Sun 22 Aug Southwesterly gale force 8 expected later Shipping Forecast - Issued: 1725 UTC Sun 22 Aug WindVariable 4, becoming cyclonic, then southwest, 6 to gale 8, perhaps severe gale 9.Sea StateModerate or rough, occasionally very rough later.WeatherRain or thundery showers.VisibilityModerate or good, occasionally poor. Even Torro is wary. A conditional risk for an isolated strong tornado exists, should robust convection develop.
  9. Sad you think you wont get anything exciting. looks to be an interesting night down here. Well is this the calm before the storm F2 now?
  10. Don't tease. You know we are all really hoping for a tremendous storm to give a kick start to a really stormy autumn which will then miraculously transmogrify into a wickedly cold and snowy winter. Well that's my hopes anyway . It is actually still raining here RAIN RAIN RAIN and yes, I am spending my Sunday night watching the lampost to see how heavy the rain is. So very sad. I am actually more interest in a F9 gale that the gale warning is offering but can't really see it coming off. Sadly the wind has decreased to a F3 gusting F4
  11. Chionomaniac, That sounds about right, the lack of rain has been a major problem on the coast this year. sadly this has come to late to revive my garden. Looks to me as if the worst of the weather will now arrive after midnight. I don't think we were originally in the line of fire for this one at all so it is a bonus for me really. By the way, I am amazed it is still so warm, 18.5C seems very warm for this time of evening in late August.
  12. Mostly the danger will be caravans i think. Mind you unless you get a F10 which isn't forecast then I doubt they will turn over. I personally am not expecting to much from this storm with regard to wind, just a normal autumn gale I think.
  13. Thanks for those thoughts TEITS, I was just wondering how many apples and pears I will be throwing away tomorrow as they are still not ripe enough for picking. well the pears anyway. I was wondering if this storm? had been a bit hype up on here but it does look to bring plenty of rain if not gales.
  14. Have had moderate rain for around an hour but now turning heavy, very dark indeed now. Winds though only F4 gusting F5. Wonder when the gales are due to move in as the Met O has F8 gale possibly F9 for tonight/tomorrow.
  15. Looks nice doesn't it? For anyone yearning to see it all again the BBC news website has an interesting article with a video and links to older videos. Nice to see for one last time. http://www.bbc.co.uk...europe-11039747
  16. All over and not even any shouting to focus on. I will continue to watch the tremor charts though to keep an eye on Katla and will also look forward to watching for the first snows on the webcams.
  17. No it's a comic. And the chap they were quoting sounds like a bit of a comic too. Sad really, you will get a good proportion of the populace telling you now that it "Is going to snow in September" then when it doesn't the same numpties are sure to blame the METO for poor forecasting even when it had nothing at all to do with them. DOH!!
  18. LOL!! My favourite season will always be winter, even though I now qualify for my pension. As long as it is a very cold one that is. I hate the mild damp winters and think they should be abolished. Ah if only we had the power!
  19. Excerpt taken from the Eruptions Blog. Over in Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull is being thanked for bringing a bumper crop of wheat to the southern part of the island. One of the wheat farmers, Olafur Eggertsson from Thorvaldseyri, says that he thinks the ash from the eruption helped by adding nutrients to the soil - although the especially warm summer for Iceland this year likely played an important role as well. http://scienceblogs.com/eruptions/2010/08/odd_volcano_news_volcano_stadi.php Nice to know some Icelanders got a bonus from the volcano this year. I certainly got a bonus in my enjoyment watching it and when I read the above I was pleased to know it was of benefit to somebody so that I didn't have to feel guilty as some had suggested at times.
  20. Top of Eyja clear today and steaming well at least it looks darker than steam so not sure if it is just steam of a steam and ash mix. May just be it looks darker because the sun is behind it? http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-thorolfsfelli/ http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-hvolsvelli/
  21. Well it's over a week since the top of Eyja has even been visible but tonight most of the glacier is clear. There does seem to be a small amount of steam still issuing from the top of the glacier so presumably the lava flow is holding a fair amount of heat. Not really possible at present to see if the crater is still steaming so hopefully the weather will clear further to give us a better view. The tremor rate is really low and so are the quakes on Eyja. A few more on Katla but nothing of note or to get excited about. For anyone interested in geysers the following webcam is interesting. The geyser erupts every 4-5 mins, sometimes more often but that is rare. Quite a good show most days but a pain waiting for it. Worse than waiting for my son-in- law to be ready on time for anything! Sorry, forgot to post the link. http://eldgos.mila.is/geysir/
  22. Wonderful picture! Would look great enlarged and put on a long wall.
  23. Sounds very likely you have hit on the answer there Mr Data, what would the spots on the sun be though? Sunspots perhaps that were noticable because the sun could be viewed without eye protection?
  24. Coming from the South I am hoping you are as correct as you usually are. Thanks John.
