Do photos have to be of weather or can they be any nature photos taken in October?
-
A beautiful day today. Light breeze with sunshine and a hazy blue sky.
Max temp today 20C. Overnight min temp 10.1C
-
overnight min temp of 8.2C and a few drops in rain gauge
currently 14.7, cloudy but bright and almost completly calm
ps. is the few drops in rain gauge dew as there is a quite heavy dew at the moment
-
Overnight had a few drops in rain gauge and a min temp of 7.8C
Currently 13.7C, calm, bright with high cloud blocking about 60% of the sky
-
Now had 15mm rain since 9:30am, lots of reports of traffic chaos caused by the storm with roads closed because of localised flooding and the level crossing at Ford closed because lightning struck the box containing the equipment for lifting the barrier.
-
overnight thunder and lightning (2:30-4:00) and heavy rain with 15.9C min temp
and 15.3 mm in rain gauge.
currently heavy rain but dropping to moderate as time goes on, 16.2C and a moderate wind
-
Wow, since my last report just over 30 mins ago we have had another 7mm of rain, crossing the garden to check the gauge it was like a paddy field!
-
Woken at 2:35am by a storm that looked like it had been around a while as there were very frequent lightning and the thunder shook the house (takes that to wake me!) fierce storm for about 35 minutes then it seemed more to the south and rumbled on until gone 4:00am. Curses one and half hours sleep lost but worth it though
Checked rain gauge and 15mm rain overnight, not surprised as it was extremely heavy for quite a while even before I fell asleep again.
Overnight minimum temp a very warm 15.3, currently 16.1C and very stormy looking clouds, still raining.

I think that the gravitational effect of Jupiter is sooo big that it 'attracts' many objects on their way into the solar system (schumaker-Levi type)
Now that was a good show!

Don't go overboard with the Doom 'n gloom.
East Antrim Astronomical Society
"DISCOVERY
Michael Mattiazzo and Rob Matson found an object in SWAN images from late June 2006, which was found on images taken by Terry Lovejoy on June 30. The comet was confirmed with images taken by Rob McNaught with the Uppsala Schmidt on July 12. It passed through the SOHO LASCO coronagraph field between August 11 and the end of the month, but was barely visible."
It didn't exactly sneak up on us from behind the Sun - it was spotted well before it went behind the sun and re-emerged a bit brighter than expected. It's an Ort Cloud object and won't return to the solar system.
We could get hit with a space rock at any time but the probablity of significant damage to Earth is slight to non existant though locally it could give someone a bad hair day. Tunguska type events are very, very rare Wikipedia
Comets and such have always been associated with fear and life changing events though no Great Comet has collided with Earth during historical times yet there is seriously more risk crossing a road. Keep it all in perspective and just enjoy the show while it lasts.
I read somewhere that Jupiter acts as a 'sweeper' for earth, either swallowing up most large objects or diverting them, anyone know any more about this?

1mm rain and min temp of 14.6C overnight with heavy mist at 11:00pm
currently 19.6C overcast with sun occasionally breaking through and very light breeze
-
Maybe a very good thing that the Earth was where it was on Aug 23rd as the incoming comet seems to nearly intercept our orbit at that time (and our Gravity may have had an effect) .
Just noticed this topic and find it very interesting. It's always a good thing the earth is where it is or perhaps a few on here would get more of a winter than they bargained for
-
Can anyone tell me what is the relationship between the hole in the ozone layer and 'global warming'?
I only ask because I read somewhere that the hole was repairing itself and wondered whether this would have any effect of the climate.
-
Well they have to be right one day probably be in 20 years time though.
Oh I would soooo love it to be true but I would rather coldest winter for 45 years
-
Overnight minimum temp 13.6C Current temp 16.2C
Overnight rain 2mm. Near calm and overcast sky, with sun just trying to break through.

I'm sure there are more knowledgeable botanists out there with far more than my layman's understanding, but I'm fairly sure that the general restriction to poleward migration of plants is the presence of sustained cold, and the ability of perennials to wintstand frost. Tropical species thrive in year round warmth and high humidity; many mediterranean species have a hardiness to cope not with cold, but summer drought. I suspect the barrier to migration has been more temperature than rainfall therefore. Arid plants may not thrive in our more humid conditions, but I'm fairly sure it wouldn't kill them; cold winters would.
I had a grape vine in the garden for years but finally cut it down as every year it suffered from mould, however I reckon this was more to do with the soil (brick earth) than humidity. On the south downs they flourish and Sussex vineyards produce some lovely wines as do vineyards in the Dorking area and in other Surrey vineyards. Certainly September has been an outstanding month with the sea temp still very warm down here, I was paddling a few days ago. However even today in a supposedly cooler spell the temp has been 17.6C and a lot of people are still wearing T shirts, me included so perhaps October will be warm too.
-
Overnight minimum temp 8.6C Current temp 17.4C
A lovely sunny day, light breeze. No rain
-
Well it has certainly been autumn the last two days, turned a corner down town today and nearly got blown over by a gale force gust coming off the sea. The leaves on the trees are finally starting to begin showing autumn colours too.
-
Current temp 17C stangely the temp seems to be rising as the afternoon progresses.
15mm rain from several bursts of torrential rain this morning as well as more steady rain most of morning.
Very windy still with some extremely powerful gusts at times.

I have a lovely one, Collins WEATHER- THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO THE ELEMENTS
If you are interested the ISBN is ISBN 0 00 230064 3
It has a lovely section about various cloud types among other weather info. I found it easy to understand but detailed too. my copy was printed 1996 so I reckon it's likely to be still in print.

Thanks Wibs, only asked as I took this photo today and would like to enter it. I was surprised to see one out so late in the year and am pleased with how the photo came out.
