  1. Definitely crossed the boundary from sleet to snow now, but I'll be amazed if much settles- everything is sopping wet
  2. Just sleet here, though it was quite heavy a few minutes ago. Very murky too.
  3. Light snow grain and sleet showers in Shrewsbury 0900-1000, no covering
  4. Turned foggy now after a very mild and dank day.
  5. Snowing at last! First ice day in nearly 4 years.
  6. Is attaching those sensors to trees OK? I ask because I received a weather station too and think that the house wall might radiate heat. Also I suspect a bit of a frost hollow at the bottom of the garden and there are some trees dowh there that would do nicely.
  7. Some light snow showers fell here yesterday evening, now it's very frosty and clear. As for snow lying- very hard to call. There is evidence of frozen precipitation having fallen in parts, snowflakes and snow crystals on pavements, bins etc though never to a depth of more than a couple of mm. Some parts of Shrewsbury seem to have received more of these showers than others- up in the northern suburbs of town there was definitely not enough lying around to count, here on the western side I'm very tempted to say "yes".
  8. Nothing that I've seen here, saw some hefty clouds to the E and S but it's clear again (though getting very cold). I just hope we don't miss out yet again
  9. I've just noticed cloud billowing in from the east and there's still a lot of frost on the ground... are we finally heading for some snow this month?
  10. Beautifully sunny after frost, which still remains out of the sun. Glorious and wintry at last.
  11. Just checked Wunderground- Belfast airport was reporting fog METAR EGAA 250820Z 18004KT 0150 R25/0350 R07/0300 FG VV/// M02/M02 Q1029 METAR EGAA 250850Z 18002KT 0150 R25/0250 R07/0350 FG VV/// M02/M02 Q1029 METAR EGAA 250920Z 18003KT 0150 R07/0400 FG VV/// M01/M01 Q1029 as was the Metoffice site all morning except the 0900 obs. Seems peculiar- anyone there actually see any snow fall?
  12. Funny, I got my first one today too (I was right about that parcel). Oregon Scientific Wireless BAR 926 HG. When the festive excess has worn off I'll try and get it up and running.
  13. Another benign day, mild, no frost with variable cloud (lots of cirrus about). Last night was so warm that I wore just a T-shirt with my coat over it at 1am, didn't need a sweater.
  14. It wasn't particularly snowy here, but I do remember it. Here on New Years Day there were snow showers on and off in the afternoon, left a cover of 2cm. The next 2 days were bright and cold, on the 4th it turned mild and rainy and stayed that way almost nonstop until the beginning of March when we had our only major snowfall that winter.
  15. Another quite unremarkable day, following some overnight rain we have leaden skies and mild (7C) temperatures- no wind, sun, rain, snow or anything. The most boring December for years goes on...
  16. Not that low but pretty low. Here unlike in the Highlands there was no snow lying around that time despite it being freezing Here's the Shawbury (15km NE of Shrewsbury) readings for the last week, from wunderground.com 26th Max 0.4 Min -7.9 27th Max -0.6 Min -8.2 28th Max -2.7 Min -8.6 29th Max -0.8 Min -7.2 30th Max -0.5 Min -4.9 31st Max 1.2 Min -0.9 It was actually colder in December 2000 and around New Year 2002 but the cold only l;asted for a few days, not the best part of a month as in Dec 95.
  17. No- 13 degrees below 32F so only 19F- that's about -7. It's been colder at Shawbury (and here) in the 2000s!
  18. You know I was just thinking about doing a December 1995 thread, you've beaten me to it Here's the lowdown of that month, here in Shrewsbury: 1-4 Carried on where November had left off, dull and mild with westerlies. 5-8 The first hint of what was to come, an easterly built and although places near the E coast got some decent falls, here it only produced dustings as had been expected to be fair. Nevertheless, we still had 3 days with snow-lying. 9-12 A period with sun by day and hard frosts at night. 13-18 During this spell winds were mostly from N through E, it was often grey and damp with temps just a little too high to turn the rain for snow. A number of days in this spell were most unpleasant, although as the temps stayed just above freezing there was always the chance.... 19 And today it came! After raining all day at 3C, around 7pm the rain got a little harder, the temp dropped and it became snow. Despite the ground being wet it stuck instantly, carried on until midnight and gave us a 7cm cover. This seemed to be quite a local event, hit all of Shropshire and much of NE Wales but not much elsewhere. 20 A bright, crisp day over fresh snow which persisted all day. 21 The overnight forecast was for snow to turn to rain from the west. The snow arrived at 4am and stayed as snow until at 9am Shrewsbury had 15cm of lying snow- something not seen or even approached since. It didn't turn to rain at all- another day with full snow cover. 22 Again the forecast was for milder air to encroach- this time it did and started to rain. However, it took most of the day for the snow to melt so this was another "morning with snow lying". 23 The only bad day- mild and windy and a real snow-killer 24-29 Cold air returned, leading to progressively more severe frost with occasional flurries but none on the big day.. From Christmas Day onwards the days stayed below freezing. On Boxing Day I went up the Long Mynd S of Shrewsbury where the snow still remained above 300-400m. The visibility in the clear cold air was astonishing, best I've ever seen. 30 Snow was forecast and arrived mid-morning, unlike to the S where they just got freezing rain. By now the ground was rock-solid and the stream at the bottom of the garden had iced over. We got 4cm of snow and the temp stayed below zero. 31 Snow cover all day, dry and cold though not quite so cold as before. Jan 1: Got milder, snow was still lying at 9am but melted through the day.
  19. Was frosty in the samall hours, down to -4 but cloud spread in and it's now merely chilly and desperately boring, like this month is turning out to be overall.
  20. Desperately uninteresting day, layers of stratus with the odd break visible and no rain, snow, wind or frost.
  21. I've just taken delivery of a parcel with "ukweathershop.co.uk" and "Weather Front Ltd" on the outside and "FRAGILE" all over the package. Seems to be about 14" by 12" and 3-4" thick. Looking at that site they seem to do loads of those electronic station things- so who knows, maybe I'll be able to give my own temperature, pressure etc updates soon!
  22. No Pope died in 1981, I think it was the year someone tried to shoot him? And if I was really nitpicking, unlike in 1981 Liverpool were champions of Europe having been champions of England the previous year
  23. Mostly a beautiful day after a frosty start, just a few high cloud patches.
  24. Last winter the first daffodils appeared here in mid-January, something I'd never seen before even in those mild winters around 1990 when late Feb was a typical time. Normally they appear some time in March.
