As for weather, well I got a horrible feeling that the ski areas are going to get wiped out mid week, then an absolutely Baltic spell of fairly dry weather to follow.
Some GFS ensemble members dipping to -17°c 850hpa temps for Highland Scotland!

Well the 06z GFS is a horror show for the ski areas as it rolls out, days of damp, dreich, clagged in mild snow eating muck next week.
Oh and throw in bouts of Storm Force winds too with the heavier rain.

Got the feeling the mess in the ensembles suggest something is up? Fort William has a 5ºc spread in 850hpa temperatures on the 12z GFS for 6am TOMORROW - at T+18hrs. Nuts!

TillyS believe these snow fences were stripped - they were entirely counter productive, too close to the tracks for their height, amplified further by being atop of a cutting.
Modern research on snow fencing states an absolute minimum of 35x the height of the fence set back from what you are trying to protect. In the case of a cutting, 35H back from the top of the slope rather than track itself.-

Covering of snow down to the Carpark at Glencoe tonight. Hopefully an improved picture up on the mountain, really need some mid-range ability level terrain because there has been nothing between complete beginner nursery areas and a few runs between CairnGorm and Glencoe that are only suitable for expert skiers and boarders presently!

There is some evidence that during the Loch Lomond re-advance period when glaciers reformed and advanced in parts of the Highlands, that summers were warmer and drier. Reduced rainfall, and a bigger proportion of precipitation falling as snow tipped the balance in favour of accumulating snowpack. Arguably could describe it as a more continental style climate.

If you look at the bottom of the Snowy Owl run - the double fence line just to the right of the Chairlift drive, that certainly looks encouraging because there was almost no snow there at all. Question is whether its sticking further up the main runs on is it getting scoured.

Well the A66 could have its moments, but is likely to get shut if things get interesting! An alternative is to go via the M6 but take a diversion via Kendal then over the original Shap Summit on the A6 - its about a 100ft lower than the top of the A66 is but is less likely to get shut.
Had some good fun in an EV with winter tyres slaloming around stuck and slithering things on the S3 bits either side of Shap Summit in mid January! Eventually had to get out and push a pair of BMWs that had completely blocked the road!-

The monkey is now resident on CairnGorm, so no risk to weather instruments in the NW.

Last hour has seen every 5 minute period notch up a gust > 100mph at the top of Glencoe ski area, with a peak of 125mph at the top of the Main Basin T-bar around 1097m. Been up to 88mph at the carpark level, given the way the wind can rip down the East Ridge of Meall a' Bhuiridh, it's going to be brutal on the A82 around the Rannoch Moor summit!

Yup, and its been like that for several ensemble sets in a row. Drops off a cliff, though from a West Coast ski area perspective its a bit infuriating as the 06z run had 2mm of rain equivalent precipitation for Glencoe for the entire duration of the run out to +384 hours!
Might have to sell my soul to the devil and handover some cash to CML!

Interesting that January stopped that year being the warmest on record to date at that time. I'll take this year being the warmest on record in Scotland, if January, February and March come in below average with way above average snowfall!

Here's a couple of A82 photos I've dug up from various places on Facebook. A major trunk road closed for 2 1/2 days, and left looking like this, is a Yellow Warning? The Met Office excuse is that there was no point updating warnings after the weather impacts had begun to occur, yet the rest of the time they are telling people to keep checking warnings after they are issued because they maybe updated at short notice. The Met Office needs a serious shake because frankly the warning system is not credible.
I'm up and down the A82 and A9 quite a lot and the matrix signs have perpetual Yellow Warning _______ [something] notices posted. These persistent what appear to be backside covering Yellow Warnings for routine seasonal weather need to stop because the effect isthat nobody really takes any much notice of yellow warnings because the MO throw them around like confetti.-

A9 very snowy looking at the Ord of Caithness. There used to be a ski tow south of the Ord around Lothmore, nothing very sophisticated a nut cracker rope tow driven by an old motorbike that was ridden up the hill for winter to drive the rope!
immediate edit - A9 snow gates now closed at Helmsdale and Berriedale, also A9 closed around Golspie.

Yes, I’m in Glasgow and about 5pm walked across the footbridge from beside the Crowne Plaza going over to the GSC and was stopped in my tracks and pushed backwards - actually had thoughts of landing in the Clyde! I’m fairly used to being in high winds, but that was completely unexpected!
Edit to add - just looked at the Glencoe Weather stations and saw this at the BASE ! Can get some insane gusts when the wind roars down the front face of Meall a’ Bhuiridh or funnels round the side of Creag Dhubh coming out of Glen Etive. Sometimes it can alternate between flat calm and rip roaring SW gust, then the next gust comes from the NW, creating the turbulence that can give 3 digit gusts like tonight!

Fun morning at Glencoe, even managed a couple of laps from the top of the Main Basin right down to the carpark. Those who tried late afternoon had to give up and walk from about half way down the Access Chair.
Somewhat depressing that most if not all the new snow will be gone by the morning. If things had stayed like this morning in terms of cover for the weekend, everything run wise on the Plateau could have been open, with the Rannoch Chair and Coire Pollach Tow going. Instead its going to be a round number of skiers this weekend!
