Yesterday saw temperatures reach 36.4c in London, making it the hottest August day since 2003, and putting it ninth on the list of the hottest temperatures ever recorded in the UK. Here we go then, after a week of talking about the heat, it arrives today. 35-37c is likely in the southeast today, with highs peaking well into the mid-thirties each day through the weekend and right into next week. Read the full update here

The weather has thrown up two things to focus on during the coming hours and days. First the rain across the north and especially northwest of the UK, with some heavy, persistent downpours today in western Scotland in particular.
