  1. Keep your pecker up Chris! A long way to go and no real agreement from the models for your week, but todays output shows a couple of possible snowfall opportunities for the Austrian Alps for you. Be interesting to see if either or neither materialise! (And at least there's plenty of snow over there at the moment for you to enjoy. I still shudder at the thought of all those poor skiers/boarders who had a week of green slopes at Christmas).

Wish I was there for the last few days - looked perfect off-piste, albeit with a higher than favourable risk of avalanche.

I was in fact there for Christmas - had about 80% of pistes open and good conditions considering :)

  2. Yes, Chris we have our first heavy snow alert of the season as a active cold front hits the Alps and brings the unusual October warmth to an abrupt end. There is some variation on the predicted snowfall amount still, however the snow level will be down to 900m-1200m widely during Wednesday and Thursday and rising to 1500m by the end of the week. The amount of snowfall progged for our location is 75cm on the local mountain at 2220m. We should received a more accurate total later this morning. Mayrhofen seems a great choice for the Christmas festivities and of course the Hintertux Glacier will offer great ski-ing near by  if a shortage were to occur in the lower valley.

Yes, snow forecasts can vary quite widely - out of interest, which sites do you use for skiing weather? - personally, I use Bergfex and find it pretty good.

I go to Mayrhofen most Christmas' - as you have have already mentioned, the glacier ensures that there is always somewhere to ski - last Christmas it was very mild, but still managed 1 powder day I think.

  3. Hi Chris,I'm not an off-piste skier so will only comment from a weather perspective. As my post above suggests, the coming week is forecast to be reasonably cold and snowy in the Alps, so I would imagine good off-piste conditions would be found. However, will it last? If you've been looking at the Model Output Discussion thread you will see that there is a big question mark over what happens from late next week onwards. There is a strong possibility of a more mobile pattern setting up with the Atlantic influence gaining ground. So I guess the big question for you is, do I risk the Alps or play safe and head for the Rockies? (Presuming your "head west" meant just that). If skiing powder off-piste is a 'must', my decision would be head west. But check out the conditions at the chosen resort as (apparently) some resorts in Utah are actually short of snow!

Thanks for the input - yes, been watching the model thread daily and as you say a number of possible outcomes.

I was in fact meaning the Western Alps - I normally stick to Austria, but dependant on forecast I would be tempted to head to France this time.

I guess that with leaving it until next week to book it may just be a case of where is available.

Mayrhofen is my usual haunt (and nice cheap packages under £300 can always be found there), so I'm kind of hoping that a shift of the lows east will happen when/if they reach the continent.

  4. Planning to book a late deal next week departing on 1st Feb for by 30th on the 7th :)

Not really sure what to do - I am a big off piste skier and after the drab week away at Christmas and sticking mainly to piste I need my powder fix!

I'm thinking that I may be best looking to head west to find the best conditions - what are everyone else's thoughts?

Any eyeball reports of decent conditions currently away from the pistes?

  5. Quick generic question to the more seasoned boarders and skiers out there. I'm looking to go to Les Gets early Jan, normally I go late season when it can be 50/50 as its not the highest of resorts.Swing and roundabouts I'm sure but is it a bigger risk going with greater likelihood of less accumulation but less sun impact or viva versa? Putting aside the fact we are in a non favourable Euro high setup.

I'd say it'spretty much the same risk to be honest - I normally spent a week out in the Alps around my birthday (7th Feb) and never been without snow.

  6. Off to Mayrhofen, Austria next Sunday for a week.  Being a backcountry skier looking for at least as much snow again as there has already been this year.  Unlikely, but if so will need to be very careful of that layer there would inevitably be Posted Image

Hopefully the temps will drop with could cover / snow from Friday as being shown a possibility so that the pack can consolidate well.

    Either way, keep safe peeps.

  7. A while since I posted on Netweather, but seeing as I am touring the Alps this winter, thought I may as well chip in.

Snow overall this season has been great - currently in Lermoos and just enjoyed a nice powder day with clear blue skies good.gif

Off to Matrei in the morning for a week.

Anyway, to view current conditions of wherever I am you can see my posts on my YouTube channel:-

    Happy skiing people

  8. Looking at the latest model output, there could be some very heavy snowfall across the Alps on Friday and into the weekend!

Good to hear - I'm flying out Thursday morning :)

I do agree though - some places look like they are going to get plastered.

I am heading to Mayrhofen and according to Bergfex forecast (which I usually trust) there is going to be 77cm falling at mountain level beween now and Sunday!

  9. The wife says its snowing like mad at home in chorley but not sticking to the road yet.

We had wet snow for about 3/4 hr after a couple hrs of rain , it's now turned back to rain ...so not expecting anything overnight here

Been for a drive up Rivington this evening - about 2" and was coming down thick and fast. Should have a nice white cap in the morning even if we dont have any - currently 2.4c here after recent snow that didnt stick - did get down to about 1.5c
