  1. Interesting. In Quorn 10 miles north of Leicester the paths are clear, the snow in my garden has all but melted and there's a couple of centimetres of snow in the park. The falling precipitation this morning has amounted to nothing except wet roads.

We did however have the excitement yesterday of a female presenter giving the national travel situation on BBC Breakfast news from the local park.

  2. Well Tuesday looks confusing - just as well I've learnt to take these things with a pinch of salt:

BBC Weather for East Midlands Airport 9 degrees and raining:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/2242

Meanwhile if I put Nottingham (just a 20 minute drive away) into the BBC Weather I get 5 degrees rain. But if I choose to be stupid enough to believe this morning's teletext 5 day forecast, Nottingham for Tuesday is showing heavy snow and 1 degree.

Then the Met Office for Tuesday also shows Derby at 9 degrees but Worksop (about 35 miles away) as 4 degrees:

Think I'll just stick my head out of the window.

  3. It seems hilarious when people compare this to 1963 - the snow stayed around until the beginning of March.

I realise that some people have had heavy falls and there have of course been low temperatures but for my locality near Loughborough we have had very little snow. So not all that memorable I'm afraid.

  4. To whoever this may concern,Hello, my name is Christopher O'Rorke and i'm a student at the University of Leicester and follow the weather keenly. To put it bluntly I am completely baffled by your constant plugging of 'Global Warming' or as you've now changed it to 'Climate change'. Aside from the obvious financial gain and media coverage your receiving I'm very confused why your making such a fuss about nothing. I'm very disappointed in the Met office jumping on the bandwagon of Al Gore and for also being caught trying to pay off scientists to agree with Climate change even though they didn't study this subject in particular.I would really appreciate a reply from you, which convinces me why Climate change is now a bigger issue than World Poverty and how this problem deserves more funding than solving world hunger. An estimated $10 billion is needed to solve the world's water problems but you and other brainwashing meteorologists are demanding that this money is spent on what is simply the earth's cycle! If I do not get a reply expect one from me in 5 years when your plugging 'Global Cooling'.Thankyou for your time.Chris.

This is an email ive just sent to the metoffice, haha had to get it off my chest!

You sent that to the METO? Oh dear I feel embarrassed for you, I really do.

  5. Cmon fellow Leicester peeps... Back me up here to prove to everyone i'm not lying :drunk: It is defanitly snowing moderately-heavy now.

Well I'm 8 miles north of Leicester and all we've had is a slight dusting with tiny flakes with nothing settling on the wet pavements and according to this Leicester's the same:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/leicester/content/webcams/st_margarets_way_burleys_way_webcam.shtml

    And this is even worse!!:

  6. Just driven 80 miles from North Lincolnshire through Nottinghamshire to Leicestershire. For three-quarters of the way it was rain and sleet with the odd short burst of wet snow. Nothing really amounting to much and very little settling due to the temperature (admittedly from a car thermometer) of around 2 degrees.

So basically a continuation of the marginal weather we've had since just before Christmas. Looks like this is going to be a winter that promises much but just fails to deliver.

  7. i think the post was a joke!

No, not a joke - I've seen no snow so far (apart from a small dusting) and temperatures are what I would expect around this time of the year. I know some have had a brief spell of spell of heavy snow but I'm afraid I don't really understand all the excitement.

For me an unremarkable run-of-the-mill winter so far but things may change. I apologise if some feel this is a wind-up, it wasn't meant to be.

  8. Confidence now increasing on a cold but very dry spell of weather for the UK. Largely unremarkable really with no ice days likely in the south for the next 5 days at least. Possibly some low minima for central and northern areas but again nothing too remarkable here.

Overall the phrase "at least it won't be mild!" come to mind, but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find anything worth getting excited about in the model output at the moment.

Cheers & all the best for New Year.

Having looked at the models I can only say I'm in complete agreement. This rather unremarkable winter continues. As someone with experience of almost 60 winters, so far I'd put this within the bottom dozen for excitement. Of course things can change but I can see nothing on the horizon yet.

  9. I hate to say this but the METO upgraded their warning 20 minutes ago from 'be aware' to 'be prepared'. But I'm not holding my breath.

Rain and sleet will turn increasingly to snow as it spreads northwards across many southern and eastern parts of England during Monday afternoon and Monday night. There will be accumulations of 2 to 5 cm of fresh snow in many areas, with up to 10 cm likely in places, especially on higher ground.

The public are advised to take extra care and refer to the 'Highways Agency' for further advice on traffic disruption on motorways and trunk roads.

  10. You really couldn't make this up, this is going to be a rant and a half so if anyone wants to pick fault with it then I wouldn't bother :)

Basically, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire have done absolutely AWFUL from this cold spell. I'm sure other places in the Midlands have too but this really has been the worst let down from such hype that I have ever seen.

South East... 5 inches+ even places 30 miles away like Northampton got a couple of inches and what do we get? 1cm accumulated over 3 days of snow showers. Now the showers which are in the North West, apperantly some places near mancs have 7cm? Those showers aren't even making their way to Leicestershire or Warwickshire because the winds aren't NW enough, they are too Westerly. So arguably the worst 2 places in the East Midlands during this cold spell. are going to miss out once again. So the North West now has decent snow cover, the South East, East, North East, Scotland and Central Southern England have seen around 5cm+ from this cold spell and here slap bang in the middle of the country we have seena 1cm dusting.

Don't care what anyone says, I am seriously annoyed.

I know what you mean. I've just been to the top of Beacon Hill (near Loughborough) at least there's a couple of cms of snow there. But the interesting thing is that you can see the Derbyshire Dales, The Lincolnshire Wolds and the countryside east of Leicester all of which are white. Unfortunately I seem to unlucky enough to be living in the middle of the only green area around!

  11. Issued by METO at 9.59 today

    Valid from 12.00 to 22.00 20.12.09

Heavy Snow - Derby & Derbyshire

Snow showers will become frequent and heavy at times during today, these showers merging into longer periods of snow at times. Accumulations of 5 to 10cm of snow are expected, with 15 to 20cm possible over higher ground. There is also the potential for some drifting, mainly over higher ground, in fresh to strong westerly winds.

  12. If you want a good animated satellite picture of what's happening try this:

BTW someone posted this METO warning page:

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_forecast_warnings.html?day=1

Don't worry, this is showing a flash warning and will update - I'm reasonably confident that the orange area will include the Midlands within a few hours.

  13. Here near Loughborough we had a yellow 'be aware' METO warning all day yesterday and today we have an orange 'be prepared'. Well I've been aware and prepared for the possibility of snow for 10 days now and all I've seen is a few brief flurries. And guess what - Sunday's METO yellow warning covers everywhere west and south of Leicestershire. That's the price you pay for living slap-bang in the middle of the country.
