  1. I've been looking at the Radar alot watching how the precipitation has twisted around this low for the last few hours and the eastward progression of the main band of snow seems to have gradually slowed its march eastwards with each frame of the radar leaving me right on the western edge which is better than I anticipated for my location. It's great to see some of the places who find it so hard to get snow having a good dollop tonight. Those depths from the IOW are fantastic :cold:

  2. Could I go all winter without a single flake?? DO I live in the only town not to have had snow??

I don't want to hear anybody complaining about their 'measly 5cm' after this! Grrrrr :D

I am a born optimist but this is trying, even for me. The thing is I could take it being a 'geographical thing', but it's not, it was pure bad luck in this case.

Ah well at least this wasn't the 'breakdown event' so maybe my time will come.

You certainly have had a raw deal from this event when it was looking so promising. Do you think there might be a chance for you later on in the night into tomorrow as the snow wraps back around from the north? There were forcasts of snow to the north of you and you know it's so difficult to predict these sorts of things.

edit. Yes I was wondering the same thing Kent

  3. Well the South Central England thread is ticking over about 100 times quicker than at any other time this Winter - about time too

Rain and sleet started to turn to snow on my way home and then got to Dibden and all of a sudden it was settling. We've had a good 60-90 minutes of snow here now, although when I went out to take some pictures a little while ago it had turned back to rain, and you could hear it melting off the trees and bushes. Nevertheless this probably ranks as equal the best snow I've seen at just over a massive 1inch/ 2.54cm so I'm pretty happy. Looking at the radar it looks like that band of snow/wintryness is going to pivot away from me soon but Portsmouth may continue for a while longer.

It just goes to show there's no need to panic within the first half hour of rain, and as far as I know there is still uncertainty about who and where the snow will hit hardest. The night is young.

For those lucky enough to have snow, savour it, take piccys and movies, and if you like the model watching side of things, save some of the model outputs so future featureless winters you can look back at today with a smile

  4. Still a rain/snow mix here although for the first time looking out the window it look more snow than rain. Starting to settle a little on the grass here too but doesn't look like much chance of it settling anywhere else. It's been fascinating watching it fall this afternoon especially watching how one moment it looks like all snow falling and then in a blink of an eye back to rain, and then back again to snow so quickly.

  5. Just got home from work (yes unfortunately I made it in today). Started snowing lunchtime and was expecting it to pass within an hour or so but the little gem stopped and pivoted almost directly on top of us and has been snowing with varying degrees of intensity for almost 5 hours. Its petering out now. Accumulations aren't perhaps in the same league as some previously mentioned on here, 2 inches maybe? - I never thought to stop and measure it - but in my location down on the coast this is something I've not experienced in a long time (not since perhaps Dec 97?) and wholly unexpected :D

  6. Got light snow now at last thanks to a band of snow that is streaming through from Brighton. Hopefully the band will drift slowly more south with a slight ENE vector to the wind and with it probably a covering with any luck...still we shall see!

I'm watching that one too Kold and hoping it stays on course for me. The snow seems to be fizzling out in a line from the Isle of Wight northwards so it's touch and go.

    From earlier today:

Had a very heavy hail shower just after 17:00. It was like someone had emptied a bag of polystyrene balls everywhere. This settled and was up to 15mm in depth in places! Also lightning and rumbles of thunder to the east over Southampton water and beyond.

Rain turning steadily to snow at around 19:15, came down quite heavily and lasted for about 10 minutes although didn't settle on the mush from the earlier hail.

Remnants of the hail still on the ground.

Attached pic of my hailman. I call him Caesar and he is still there.

been heavy snow here for the past half hour and still going. a good covering on the grass and roofs

:) saw this and thought i had posted earlier but couldn't remember doing it?

  8. Apparently the rumor in the office is that we had snow at about 4am this morning. I did wait until 1am last night but when it started raining that's when i called it a night. Suffice to say I wasn't expecting anything lying on the ground when i woke up this morning and I was right (no pleasant suprises just incase the models, forecasts, temps. were all wrong!). I received a phone pictures this morning from the guy (lives in Basingstoke 30 miles north) who sits next to me, with a giant Snowman which only made me more envious. However I am genuinely pleased for everyone who did got a good dumping of snow and the pics are great.

Who knows when another event like this will happen again, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Hopefully the cold air will linger a little longer for those who have it to give you a top up at the weekend
