Ahhhh - a planisphere is a wondrous thing. You can now get devices which you point at the sky, and they not only identify what you're pointing at, but display it on a small screen, and give you an audio commentary. That's cheating though....I think.
Uranus is in the east.
Yes I own a Meade mySky, a truly ingenious device. http://www.meade.com/mysky/index.html
Celestron make the SkyScout which is also something else. http://celestronskyscout.com/
Many mobile phones now have similar apps. available.

Cloud has prevented me from seeing any of the Leonid shower (Comet 55R/Tempel-Tuttle) this year. Has anyone else had more success?

starts gong dark about 4.15 and dark for around 4.30-4.45pm proper messes with my body clock
Perth now pitch black by 16.40 and I feel my SAD coming on in full force.
It is interesting from that map how many countries choose to take the time zone one to the east of where they should properly be.
Indeed Catch. Thanks for that chart Essan, a real eye opener.

I am producing reasonably priced "Casella" type Stevenson Screens. They are built by me a retired university craftsman/engineer. At £395, they are beautifully made - if I say so my self - from quality redwood with yellow pine slats. All the nails are brass and the rest of the fittings are either brass or stainless steel. They are painted with four coats of paint (1.5 Litres ). See my ebay listing: http://cgi.ebay.co.u...em=260695819544
Do they contain the thermometers Andy B and if not where can they be purchased? A lovely item - what length of life would you give it in our Climate? I have added to my Watch List on Ebay for future consideration.

I will never forget one evening after several days of freezing fog it started snowing with the fog only slowly clearing. I have never understood how that could happen.

Leaf-fall in Perth is almost complete. This week should finish it off.

Upcoming cold spell will lead to mild mush by end of December, sadly.

Heavy, driving sleet in Glenrothes, Fife at 18.00. Difficult to see the road with the ice hitting the windscreen.

Cold Spell? Total non-event for lowland Scotland. Neither Perth (where I live) nor Dundee (where I work) had a single snowflake! Lowest temperature of -4C on Thursday morning but most nights it hovered at +2C. What happened?
