I've been tracking this area of precipitation all evening and to me it looks like making landfall somewhere around the Blyth area and then heading sse from there.Just my uneducated opinion though!

Looks like the showers coming into Tyne and Wear now more from the NNE rather than due North, looking good at the moment
-
I've just been looking at the radar images and i'm keeping an eye on an area of more intense precipitation just leaving the dutch coast which hopefully will be heading in our direction.

Radar broken?
Yep,both net weather and met office radar stuck at 22.25,talk about bad timing!

Quite an encouraging post from Stewart (GP) in the technical model thread emphasizing a return (If we ever leave it) to a cold regime around the 28th Jan (a week Monday) from a NE/E, he even states that the models could do a marked turn around come the weekend. He's certainly put his cards on the table and if this comes to fruition I expect you folk inland and elevated are going to have a rough time especially if theres no breakdown in the current conditions..!!
Just had a look at the 18z run from GFS and from t276 onwards(FI I know), there are some excellent Synoptics showing for a prolonged and pretty severe wintry spell, especially for the north and east of the uk

I lived and worked in peterborough for a while, market deeping, really smart area, not as friendly as us northerners though lol
sleet shower here at the moment, although there is tiny snow flakes mixed in.
There are some nice places just outside P'boro,I have friends and family still down there and besides my parents, they have all moved out of the city to the surrounding areas.
Back on topic,I'm hoping for some fresh snow cover tonite, the pistes of Val de Jarra are looking a bit bare plus I've just ordered a new sledge for my son as his big lump of a dad cracked his old one today!oops

I went to Peterborough for the fist time last year.
There was a market selling second hand trash just round the corner from the railway station, things like prams and wheelchairs. It was awaful and it smelled.
I will never ever go to Peterborough again and urge anyone who has never been not to. It's actually worse then Middlesborough.
It was a great place to live when I was growing up there(despite a lack of snow),but it has detiriated since I left in the mid 90's

Just to let you know we're getting nailed here and far more snow has fallen than the 2-5cm predicted by the Met O. I can see this becoming even more extreme for the NE & E Scotland and I would ignore any 2-5cm predictions. I shall certainly be following this thread tomorrow!
Hi Teits,it's good to here my home town getting some decent snow for a change! After the great snow events of the early 80's p'boro always seemed to miss most of the snow hence my move up to the North East(and the love of a good women)!
The next 24hours are certainly going to be fun and even if my location may be a bit marginal for disruptive snow i can easily jump in my car and go snow hunting.

I still don't know what to think, the weather pro app I have on my iPhone which is basically metro group/ weather cast has been forecasting all snow here for Monday for the last few days and still is, I don't know what model they use.. Perhaps ECM if they are a European company.
The met office if forecasting nothing but sleet for hebburn, but if I choose Newcastle it says heavy snow until at least 12. So my thoughts on that are does the met office computerised forecast system use a station closer to the coast for hebburn, because I would say it has a more similar climate to Newcastle, if not better than the centre.
Tomorrow I'm back to Uni, and I'll expect heavy snow in the rush hour to it, so if the metros are still running and I get there I'll be in central Newcastle most of the day, which is normally a touch warmer due to urban heat island effect, if it turns to rain there it could still be snowing at home I've known it before where jarrow had lying snow last year and in Newcastle it was sleet.
I'm inclined to think with Evap cooling snow may last until dinner time at home in hebburn, and then who knows after Evap cooling may loosen it's affect due to the warm sector whenever that arrives, and it could turn to sleet and rain, we'll just have to see!
I'm pretty sure the BBC use Tynemouth as the nearest weather station for NE31 AND NE32 postcode areas cos that what appears on the BBC mobile weather app on my mobile.
I for one will be glued to the N/W radar tonite (sad,i know),with fingers crossed!!

Morning all, just a quick question to those in the know.
How far inland will we have to be to avoid the sleet/rain forecast for the coastal strip?
Living in Jarrow I fear I will be too close to the sea for decent snowfall tonight and tomorrow.
Cheers Andy

Look at the radar folks, there is a large area of showers approacing from the s/e,all the way from the N Yorks coast upto Tyneside.
ETA 1445 here in Jarrow.
-
Heavy snow settling on all surfaces now.
This shower has lasted 1/2 an hour now and the radar is really looking promising for more showers feeding in.
Edit Eased right off for now!
-
Moderate to heavy snow now falling and settling in Jarrow.
-
Just had word that it's snowing right out to the South Shields coast
Ha ha,i think me and you are the same person Andy163,my misses has just texted me to say that it was snowing hard down 'street'.

Radar showing some heavier ppn heading towards Newcastle in the next 30 mins........
Yeah,i have just spotted that too although it is showing as rain on the NW radar which seems strange
Andy
-
Moderate snow now falling here.PHEW!!!
Andy
Edit All surfaces now turning white
-
Still having ice pellets mixed with some larger flakes falling.I think this might struggle to settle unless it gets heavier soon as surfaces are now wet rather than white.I hope i am wrong!
Andy
-
A few bigger flakes now and slowly getting heavier but still seems sleety to me.

Temp down from 1.4C to 1.0C in the last hour here in Jarrow.
Very light precipitation, sounds a bit sleety on conservatory roof.
Andy
-
Temp here in rural Jarrow is -3.5 and falling away rapidly.
The air is so dry that there is no visible frost tho,me Mam would have her washing out to get it freeze dried lol.

We have done very well snow in Dec. and got about 5 inch. in January are you talking about Durham there not Cleadon Hills because thats not 20 miles from Jarra, Tynemooth had some deep snow a couple of Fridays ago though didnt they and Shields? No thats not Durham WEST Lol.
Now that all depends on your definition of deep!!
We have had 3 falls of about 4 inches so musn't grumble, would love a big dumping to finish off the winter tho.But at least this winter most of the country, including your patch, has had at least one good snowfall.
-
What Sea your not a Sandancer your an adopted Viking, lol
You're right Blizzard but we are only 4 miles from the North Sea.The high ground 20 miles to our west still have snow lying from January!
How have you done for snow this winter?

A bit of a concern for me is the precipitation further north in the heavier band is showing as sleet on the radar
