  1. Thanks to all for an informative thread. I am just about to take the plunge and get a weather station as I am moviing permanently to Ireland. The area I am moving to is near the Atlantic coast so it is important that I have one that can take a battering from the winds (especially if future winters/spriings are anything like the last one  ). I had been thinking of putting the anonometer at the front but I am not sure it would survive.

I am particularly interested in the wind speed and rainfall totals so if there are any further recommendations for someone on a modest budget I would be grateful.

How easy are they to hook up to the PC as I am not very technical minded.

I am also thinking of getting a hand held anonometer so I can use it when I am out and about. Any recommendations?

  2. Apologies if this is in the wrong thread

    **********************RIVER SWALE IN CATTERICK*************************

tHIS RIVER RUNS UNDERNEATHER THE A1 AND THIS AFTERNOON BURST ITS BANKS FLOODING THE A1 SOUTHBOUND AND THE INSIDE LANE GOING NORTH BOUND,. AT 1800 HRS TONIGHT THERE WAS 15 MILE TAILBACKS WITH TRAFFIC COMING FROM THE NORTH HEADING SOUTH , BROUGHT TO A COPMPLETE STANDSTILL

DRIVERS ARE ADVISED TO STAY WELL CLEAR OF THIS AREA AND IF POSSIBLE TAKE A DIFFERENT ROUTE,

    NIGEL

    That sounds pretty horrendous Nigel.

    Hope everyone stays safe.

Still watering the garden here due to lack of rain. :drinks:

  3. Although theres nothing on radar the past hour and a half weve had several 'dry' thunderstorms move through here! Thyre moving quite fast and i cant see convection as its all embedded in stratus cloud, aound 2:00pm there were some dark bases around and theyve been producing rumbles since then, the bases are getting larger and darker but still no precip,it has become noticably more humid also.

    Joe :)

Thanks for that Joe. I now have a better understanding of what is happening. Haven't heard any rumbles here but have noticed the clouds and the increasing 'mugginess'.

  4. What an informative thread. Thank you all (well nearly all).

We have regularly driven late Friday evenings from London to Glasgow at this time of year and have always been fascinated by the skyline, especially from midnight on when we hit Cumbria and continue on through Scotland. There is usually very little traffic on the motorways so it is a joy to drive on the roads and still be able to see the outline of the hills etc.

I will now have a better understanding of what is happening.

  5. .............................................

We need to learn. This was well predicted, so there shouldn't be any travel chaos. But we'll see what some wet snow in London causes, and the knock on effects for all of us, not least people commuting, but being bored sh*tless for the rest of the day by the typical hype that comes from a centralised media network.

I agree to some extent with what you say but the numbers of people affected in the south east/London area are partly the reason it receives so much attention.

I travel 11 miles every day to work and have to drive as I need access to my car to travel around. Every day it is nose to tail traffic and that is regardless of the time I travel. If I went by train or bus there would be the same problem - overcrowding. So any weather incident that occurs affects travel and therefore disrupts MILLIONS trying to get around London. London and the south east are overcrowded and something needs to be done but that is a discussion for another day - LOL!

Snow here 2+ inches. Had almost stopped but now gettting heavy again.
