  1. Peter Henderson is from Northern Ireland where 1998/99 had a fair few snow events. That winter had a very unusual distribution of snow cover across the Tyne & Wear area, with the season as a whole having 9 days of lying snow at coastal Cleadon but only 4 at inland Durham. In Cleadon, there were snow events on 4-6 December 1998, 9-12 January 1999, 8-10 February 1999 and 13-15 April 1999, though only 9 February 1999 exceeded an inch of lying snow. But even at Cleadon it was nowhere near 1993/94 or 1995/96.

The winter of 1998/99 was also fairly snowy by recent standards in the north and east of East Anglia, probably because of the same east-coast snow showers that affected Cleadon.

yes, even in Dublin I remember in april 1999 one night it started snowing heavily at around 11pm and did not stop till about 3am.In total there was about 5 Inches lying on the ground,I built a snowman :D ,next morning all the snow was gone except for my 5 foot snowman in the garden, everybody was wondering where the heck it came from :D

  2. I agree with much of this and have the feeling that while this winter does stand out, actually I feel robbed that we can't regard it more as "the norm" rather than the exception, I certainly think it sticks out a lot more in the noughties than it would have back in the eighties.

That said, when you look at the figures provided by Mr Data (who surely should be elevated to a forum peerage!), you have to be impressed by the fact that, for the timeframe, it's in the bottom 10% of CETs in the last century... something not even 1990-91 can lay claim to!

    Also the coldest since 81-82!

  4. Met for Tonight

    Tonight

Very cold and mostly calm and clear after dark. Widespread frost soon developing, becoming severe in many areas. Temperatures falling to between 0 and - 5 C. Cloudy weather spreading from the Atlantic overnight and during the morning, bringing outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow, and a freshening southeast to south breeze. Falls of snow in places, especially further north and east, with the possibility of disruption for a time.

Also weather warning from the met :

    Weather Warning

    Issued at 07 February 2009 - 13:02

    Weather Advisory

    Issued at 13:00 Saturday 7th February 2009

A frontal system will move eastwards across the country during Saturday night and Sunday. The associated rain will turn to sleet or snow in places as it moves inland during Saturday night and early Sunday morning. This is possible almost anywhere away from the south and southeast coasts, but is most likely over Connacht, Ulster and the northern half of Leinster.

However, clearer weather reaching the southwest and west coasts around dawn will follow on to remaining areas during the day on Sunday, with some rise in temperatures for most parts.

Any lying snow near sea level should start to thaw.

  7. Something major could be on the cards in the next few hours for the Southern Contingent.

The Major precip from the Southern trough is moving more North and North Westerly than expected.

With the Northern trough coming down and meetin it Dublin and eastern areas in general could be in for a suprise right up to County Down in N Ireland.

    Game on I say

    yay now im happy :pardon:

when do you think it could hit the south of dublin?

Radar screenshots from 9pm and midnight:

Interesting over Donegal but thats about it for the moment. Things may have intensified ever so slighltly further east but thats probably just wishful thinking on my behalf!

I agree, well spotted I was keeping an eye on the northern band of snow. Could get very interesting over the next few hours, particularly around Dublin.

well il be happy if it snows here again :cray:

temp is 1.6c and dropping
