  1. Where's GTLTW lately?

Thought he would have graced us with his presence and commentary on the little snow Newbury got today.

Been a member for years but rarely post; mostly just spectate - decided I should try to a bit more! Anyway not exactly Newbury but close enough and today was a really nice surprise. No more than an inch and there's only a patchy covering of less than a cm or so left on the ground now, but it was good whilst it lasted (and the roads were terrible for a couple of hours). Just to the east (hills around Farnham, Surrey and where I used to live) went for a walk in snow that was at least 3 inches and still coming down really heavy around lunchtime. I miss not living there anymore :(

Good luck to everyone over the next few days - surprises are always possible at short notice when it's this cold :)

  2. Looking through the last few pages, I'm amazed there aren't more reports! Here in Surrey last night it started off as very heavy rain, with thunder and lightning to boot. But then all of a sudden the temperature shot down and the most intense snow fell for around an hour, maybe two. All the while with the thunderstorms continuing. I've not seen anything like it since.. Janurary 2004? The rate of snow fall was incredible!

The snow settled on main roads, pavements etc. but was extrememly slushy due to the massive amount of rain preceeding it. All traces of last nights' snow are all but gone except on the cars, with the previous cover now melting fast in +4 temps.

An interesting night though, that's for sure, but perhaps very localised looking through the reports?

  3. Right on the boundary between the South East and Central Southern England!

Judging by what's going on in the South East thread, it will snow for pretty much all of us. It will just likely begin as rain or sleet to the far west of our region and along the coast, but change back to snow as cold air undercuts along the front coming down. For those in the east of central southern England it should hopefully be almost all snow!

Whatever falls will freeze very quickly once the front's gone through.

  4. A very intersting read, thank you!

In our area it was really apparent just how localised the depth was in places when compared with others. It seems that the showers tracked in a line through London, and then west through Surrey. 10 miles South of us there were a few inches at best, whereas here we had 28cm of the stuff! Truly unbelievable for us, and I wish you guys along the East coast much better luck next time we get a similar set up!

  5. Started snowing about 9 o clock ish last night. Driving home was pretty bad. They had gritted the roads but it was just too heavy.

Woke up this morning and looked outside!

At least a foot of snow has fallen up to this point! I've never ever seen anything like it here in Southern England. I uploaded a few photos (and hope they worked?), and the picture with the swing in it clearly shows just how deep it is. In places it was much deeper than this, walking through it was really tiring, with it at least up to my knees on all surfaces.

Needless to say that today was quite a good one!

Looking at the radar it seems that the next batch that was supposed to hit us won't. :)

But then, I'm happy with what we've got!

    (28 level cm!)

  6. Around the Farnborough area the canal is completely frozen solid to several inches thick. In the heathland area behind the airport there's a lake (I think it might be a small reservoir) frozen solid with people actually walking right across it today! It must be around 2 or 3 acres in size, and it's certainly quite deep. A man standing in the middle of the lake whilst I walked past procalimed "Its at least 8 inches thick out here!" I think he may have been exaggerating a little, but it was very thick none the less. This area must have been one of the coldest places in England for a number of nights now.
