Some lush sunshine across Cornwall, if it moves northwards soon, we could end up with a decent enough afternoon for the rest of our long weekend break in Tenby even if it is cold

Good luck. You might do ok with sun later I hope. We're off there tomorrow for a day and night. Looks ok.

but when you do that he gets all egotiscal and arrogant on your butt - he's not a nice guy to talk to even when you try and be pleasant with him

That's really all up to you. Demonstrate, using charts and knowledge, why he's wrong. Other twitter users will then make their own mind up.

  3. Derek is, as far as I recall, still skiing. So any forecasts will simply be a repeat of the Chief Forecaster's assessment. He's retweeting what some of the charts currently show.

How about, if you want to call him out to the BBC, just post on his twitter feed and debate him?

he's already been doing it - a result of him not doing it early enough the last time lol

He hasn't. Not really, he's been posting some temps and arpege charts.

Anyhow, my post was a bit tongue in cheek, he has and will be reporting on snow as he's currently skiing :D

I was wondering the same thing. Huge drifts here but on the west facing/sheltered sides of roads and lanes.

    found this on internet

    https://www.quora.com/Why-does-snow-build-up-on-the-opposite-side-of-the-car-the-wind-is-blowing-on

Yeah, seems reasonable. It's unexpected given the massive wind speeds, you'd expect the wind to force the snow over the obstacle at such speed it wouldn't have a chance to drop. I suspect some sort of vortex effect. It was remarkable, driving around today at just how many places exhibited it. Even on our street, which faces East, the snow came up, to the end of the cul de sac then settled on my neighbours drive opposite (his house faces South, so the walls are East and West) squarely up against the West facing wall.

  6. 4am this morning we had a few extra inches, and total road coverage. That had gone by the time I got up at 7. Garden pretty much green again now. A very quick thaw indeed.

The drifts will take a while to go but the main stuff will all be gone by Monday in many areas. Next weekend looks fairly unlikely given how relatively close we are in the models.

  7. The red warning started for SW and Wales 1hr an 40m ago. The MO will over estimate the arrival so that people can be safe. It starts on the South Coast so stands to reason that it won't therefore be immediate. And it makes sense to bracket two regions together expecting, on a northerly track, one to get hit before the other. Look to the SW England thread, go from there.

We've had pretty much non stop snow since before 7am this morning - I'm wondering how different the main even is going to be to be honest

Well, it's going to be more intense precipitation with more wind. Visibility will take a big knock.

I think here in Tondu and Bridgend area we should get up to 10cm tomorrow/Friday, so further north and east I would expect you to get somewhat more than that, or am I being too hopeful?

I've a good feeling about this one. I'll go 20, 25-30 for north of Cardiff.

  10. They will wait for the latest model runs, in fairness they have been very accurate over the last few days, this all depends on the Mogreps if it shows same as NAE then warnings will be issued, it would hazzard a guess that something similar to NAE is being shown and its now about getting the exact location that it will stall. I suspect Yellow Warnings accross Most of Powys, Amber Bridgend to Monmouth and red around Brecon and heads of valleys if similar to NAE. We will know before 1pm

No criticism of them intended. They've been excellent. More a comment on sods law than anything. Their performance has been excellent but what are the odds on them being hauled over the coals based on a safely issued amber that never happens.
