Now day 39 in Brisbane without rain, possible storm tomorrow night, if nothing happens we're looking at being in mid to late 40's days with no rain.
-
I moved to Brisbane from Scotland 3 months ago and noticed this news this morning
"This morning was the fifth consecutive morning of sub-zero temperatures in Alice Springs, a new May record. The previous record May run was four mornings, in 1976."
If the world weather is really all linked and intertwined, maybe we're running into a repeat of 1976, and we all know what happened in the UK that summer.

I saw it when driving the kids home, I thought it was a firework at first. I was driving South and it went left to right so it came from the East.
Nothing spectacular though

Indeed Data which explains why Scotland has had an exceptionally cold and snowy winter. I don't remember us doing too well in the easterly of February 1986? Flurries and a dusting was about as much but some areas had quite a few inches in the east.
Not all of Scotland
Decent snow on the 22nd December has been the lot for Glasgow
-
Glasgow at southern edge of all this snow, can it last all night?
-
it's certainly not lying in Glasgow City centre, despite snowing heavily for more than 3 hours.
I better find the 5 mile trip South at 5pm has made a difference!!!
-
Yikes is Glasgow about to get it's first decent snow of this "historic winter" since the 22nd December.
Here's hoping.
-
Well as a resident of Glasgow I'll remember it as being cold for a few weeks that's about it. 1 Decent snowfall and 2 small ones. Some very cold nights and days
No problems getting to work or driving, no inconvenience other than having to thaw out the car a few times a day.
All in all pretty boring.

Hi All,
Anyone know what the official lowest temp was for last night and where?
Just spoken with a delivery guy who came to the office at work and he said that he heard that Whitburn West Lothian had hit -22.5 Deg C last night I also heard a punter calling Radio Forth this morning and telling Boogie that he had a -20 Deg C reading on his car, some place in East Lothian
I did see a - 11 Deg C on the car display while driving to work this morning on the south side of the Forth bridge
Anyone ?
Big Innes
My car briefly dropped to -15c just as I came off the mate at J4 this morning heading for Bathgate, it was -14.5c in Bathgate itself. Whitburn only a few miles from there

Hi bingobob,
i drive for scotrail on the old SPT routes across the greater glasgow area.. things are certainly groaning out there, ive never seen so many staff just sitting around with nowhere to go.
Should see the icicles in some of the tunnels!
Craig.
LOL, that was a new one on me as well, icicle patrols being carried out in all electrified tunnels.

morning everyone. quite like the current gfs run this morning, suggests the blocking may well continue for a few more weeks but also gives a possibility of atlantic systems pushing against it and being rebuffed over the west..... hopefully we may get our chance of snow from it.
As far as infastructure goes, the cold is really taking its toll on our trains now... was back in at work after a few days yesterday and we have had to cancel loads of routes around glasgow just so we can double all our trains up into 6 carriages as the cold means that the air systems that run the brakes, doors, heating etc are failing on a regular basis. Add to that many stations are literally falling apart now with platforms cracking apart.
another couple of days couple be very interesting never mind another couple of weeks.
What do you do Argyll? Scotrail? Work for Network Rail myself. Points failures causing mayhem at the moment, an average January day should have 25,000 delay minutes nationwide, yesterday was 125,000 minutes.
This could spell is certainly damaging one thing, my bonus!!!
-
Left Glasgow at 07.30 car was reading -9.5c, which seems to tie in with what others had. Arrived in Bathgate at 08.30 to -14c.
Bathgate also has at least a foot of snow lying in areas untouched.
-
Am I the only one fed up with it now? Several inches of ice covering everything isn't quite as attractive as fresh snow!!
The roads in Glasgow seem to be deteriorating daily and are in all honesty a disgrace, I assume the continual melting and refreezing is causing cracks in the road to open more and more. I've already had to replace a tyre due to hitting a pothole.
More snow required

How has the south of Spain been faring the last 3 weeks when receiving all the rain normally destined for the UK?
-
It's going to freeze up overnight and stay cold again, don't panic BB.
Frozen slush, great lol
All this talk of 12 inches of fresh snow is making me jealous.
-
The one decent spell of snow we had in Glasgow was last Tuesday, it's now nearly gone, all we have left is dirty slush. We need more or a melt quick
-
why when it's -8c already in Glasgow are all the major weather sites predicting a minimum of -4c?
-
-
3 1/2 hrs of solid heavy snow in South side of Glasgow, mega snowman building with the kids tonight. It must be like the North Pole by now up in East Kilbride.
-
Yeah they do. I'll go have a look
That sounds like a no then, thanks for your help

Unfortunately (but as you might expect) there's no definitive answer to using either of those measures for temps at surface.
The significance of dam values is that the rule of thumb for wintry ppn is anything sub 528dam. But of course there are exceptions in certain set-ups. And remember the true dam value is only shown on the HGT 500-1000 charts - not the 500Hpa charts which many people get muddled up with.
As for the 850s - remember they are the air temps 1.5kms up. Again, a rough rule of thumb is to add 10ºC to get surface temps at sea level, but this is even less reliable than the dam thickness rule above!
That's cleared it up then!!! I'm curious why temps of -15 are shown in the North of Scotland next Tuesday/Wednesday when the 850temp is much higher, is it simply a result of lying snow, do the gfs temp charts take that into account?
-
Gents,
any of you care to explain to me the significance of the 508-512 dams shown in Scotland early next week, do these relate to likely ground temperature or are the 850 temps a better indication of ground temperature?

2 months of solid cloud, wind and rain in Glasgow.
worst 2 summer months I can remember and no sign of any change.
Any experts enlighten me what is needed to break this cycle!

Netweather showing -7, BBC showing -2, metcheck showing -9 for Glasgow on Wednesay night. Why the large variation and is -7 or -9 a possibilty?
